I did a double-take on that one as well. Ham certainly isn't kosher! But a friend of mine wrote today to describe their weekend, with Passover dinner, followed by Easter with and egg hunt for the new grandbaby. Flexibility is a great thing!

So, Max, how many Easter Eggs did you have to deploy while you were away?

Thursday I made home-made gefilte fish for my church's Passover seder and yesterday was in charge of the games for the church's Easter Party. Talk about the best of both worlds.

hmm, well not knowing anyone's religious affiliation I just went with the celebratory food most familiar to me! No offense intended...

The point was, I hope Max and all the Mudcat powers-that-be had a happy (serene?) holiday...

For me, that would have to include ham...mmmmm....non-kosher meats...

My Rhode Island Polish wife and mother-in-law made borscht with kielbasa, and home-made cheesecake with strawberries for desert, and we had Polish blessings before we ate. Couldn't understand a thing, but it was delicious.
Hope you ate well, too, Max.

Lemme see . . . we starting off with miscellaneous finger-foods and dips that Jo and Denise brought, we had chicken breasts in a yummy cream sauce of my sister Pat's concoction, asparagus (Jo also brought that), salad, potatoes, mushrooms, and a turkey-ham that my wife Barbara whipped up, and a couple of kinds of wine. Phoebe brought a lemon cake (not store-bought, she made it herself) and we had coffee to go with that. This, along with little dishes of nuts, small chocolate eggs, and other such mini-nibbles all about the place. John (Pat's husband) and I brought our taste buds, and we engaged in the ritual after-dinner burpin' and scratchin'. Seven of us altogether, starting at 2:00 in the afternoon and we didn't wind down until about 9:00 in the evening. Good company and good conversation all the way. And the fridge is full of left-overs. Life is good.

Would a turkey ham be kosher? I would think so. . . .

Wow, that sounds like a feast fit for kings. And a nice family gathering too.
I did not have Easter dinner anywhere (this thread has taken a sharp left turn but who cares? Mudcatters seem to love to discuss food!), but I did eat pork for dinner which in many households is traditional at Easter (a standing pork roast or roasted or grilled pork loin is fine fare).

Here's a nice tip for pork chops: marinate them overnight in Annie's Honey Mustard dressing. Yum. Annie's makes great all-natural salad dressings which make excellent marinades. try the Organic Green Garlic, too.

For summer: marinate a pork loin in the best barbecue sauce you can make/buy. Grill on HOT grill until slightly blackened on the outside; don't overcook! The very center (diameter of a quarter) can be ever so slightly pink...

This thread proves that Mudcatters have manners -

First we say thanks and then we eat!

By the way - Turkey ham would be kosher as long as the company that produces it employs a rabbi who makes sure that the process of killing, preparing and packaging the turkey falls within the Kosher guidelines. Technically, pork (and shell fish) is not directly connected with Orthodox Kosher Laws. There are specific prohibitions on certain meats that are absolute. The Kosher part comes into play when it comes to butchers killing the meat and preparing the food for sale in stores.

Most major food companies employ rabbis for this purpose so they can display the U or K symbols on their packaging (or P for Kosher for Passover which is anothe whole batch of matzoh)

Pax yall.

BTW, it's no big secret, but Max is not Jewish in spite of his last name. He is Bhuddist........and hunts and eats meat too. Oxymorons to me, but I guess not to him. Oh well. It's his life.

A neighbor bought one of those Honey-Baked hams, spiral cut, and it was very nice (though everyone asked her why she bought such an expensive one--she told everyone that it was her gift to them for Easter). My ex brought boiled/herbed new red potatoes, I brought my homemade rolls (with garlic and oregano and olive oil in the dough), someone else brought apple and cherry pies, one of the host's daughters brought the green beans and bacon. It wasn't as big a meal as thanksgiving or yule. But it was a nice day, and the host's 14-month-old grandson toddled around and found the conspicuous eggs that his cousin and my son "hid" for him. Meanwhile, my daughter and another cousin hid the eggs for my son and the first cousin. . . gets confusing. Most of the kids had a good time most of the time.

After I left, my 14-year-old daughter pulled a little child-care duty with the toddler, and discovered the absolute joy of how it feels when that little one falls asleep in your lap. It sounded like she was reluctant to put him down on a bed to sleep. I know the feeling--and not too long ago she was the baby in my lap!

Peg, I've always loved Annie's dressings. Now that I have a restaurant, we buy them by the gallon, and I make new converts every day! Our favorites are Goddess and Shitake Sesame. Waitstaff has a fun time abbreviating that one on checks! We'll marinate anything in either one. Yum.

Easter was a mellow day with family, TWO DAYS OFF IN A ROW!!

Glad everyone seems to have had a nice holiday: hope all were. Yet another occasion to be glad for this community, too.

At the risk of hijacking a perfectly good BS thread with music:
Since my sister was visiting with cutie-pie niece and nephew, we got to talking about favorite tunes for kids. She turned me onto Dan Zanes, who did a lovely CD featuring (among others) Aimee Mann, Lou Reed and some great tunes, folk and new.
