His grandma did a radio show way back when. His great-uncle was a record company exec when 78's first came out. The uncle got a new record of every one which was produced. My friend inherited the collection, plus has quite a few rare recordings of his own. Anyway, thanks to modern technology and him having some time, finally, he has taken his favourite cuts off of several of his 78's and put them on a 3 CD set. I'll get the tech details from him in a day or two, but they are digitally remastered without losing any of the unique 78 sounds that make them so precious, IMO. This guy is a genius when it comes to audio engineering and production! Each CD is available at no charge except $5.00 to cover his production and mailing costs. From Roger C. responding to my morning email about all of you PMing me for details: "That's great news, I'd love to get a bunch of those out. Any proceeds I get from those will go to buy a memorial to be placed at 1402 East Main in Klamath Falls, which was the home of Stan Kilarr. Sadly when Stan died some relatives already had a deal to sell the land his "hump backed" old house sat on...the worst part of the story is it was bulldozed with most of the record collection inside, many original masters and one-of-a-kind transcriptions included. There's now a commercial fueling station and convenience store on the property, the ownership has already agreed to give us a prominent space for a memorial to Stan. "I don't have any problem at all with you giving any and all contact information to people. (I had asked about giving out his street addy.) I trust people with this kind of musical taste...this kind of appreciation is as much a "soul" thing as music. As I'm sure you remember my record collection numbers in the tens of thousands and I have a great deal more to come from restorations. I'm also open to people looking for something specific and will be glad to do custom restorations for their needs if I can get (or have) an original. "Thanks for helping me network these!" Stanley Floyd Kilarr was a radio personality as early as the late 1920's and one of the earliest forces to introduce western hillbilly folk music to west coast audiences. "In 1928 Stan was at KFON in Santa Barbara when he first met Cyprian (what a name) "Ezra" Paulette and his un-named ensemble of "old time" musicians who were starting to become popular. It was Stan's comments that with all the money they were making they've moved from hillbillies to Beverly Hill Billies. "Stan Kilarr was also a stock actor in Monogram western movies of the 30's and 40's, where John Wayne became a fast friend. Both Stan and John Wayne were married for a short time to "Princess White Feather", who was also an actress in those movies. "Stan has written music for many of the greats including the Beverly Hill Billies and Gene Autry. Above all Stan had one passion: restoring, archiving and releasing old time western music. His goal was to make sure the great music, voices and feeling of the past were preserved in such as fashion to last into another age. He a;ways told me that some day, someone was going to invent a way to "bring back" those sounds...and he always had confidence that I was going to be one that would be a caretaker of the music and heritage. At long last I'm able to take steps in that direction... "He was a colorful character appearing many times on KGO radio as an expert on old time radio and hillbilly music. In the 60's he and Curt Massey (of the original Massey Family) were called upon as musical consultants for the CBS "rural" comedies. "In his heyday Stan always dressed the part...and drove his trademark 1959 Cadillac Coupe'de Ville. He lectured in colleges and was always an enthusiastic friend to youth...making sure the younger generation learned to respect the great sounds of the past. I would not have developed the deep love I have for old time music without the help of Stan Kilarr whom I met when I was just 7 years old. " These three CDs are dedicatd to Stan Kilarr. He was a friend to music, a fine musician, and a crackerjack DJ/voice-over man and the best friend anyone could ever want. My Rog and he were best friends when I met them both on the same day. My life hasn't been the same since. I am going to go cry me a river for now. May come back to tell more of him, later. This is a shock...two weeks ago he was doing great. sadkat |

He'd fixed up his mando and was making music with some neat people in the Portland, OR area and was so happy. He'd also connected with a church, was on the board, had prayer partners and was a force of light for many who attended. Before moving back to Portland, he lost everything in Alabama; left with just his car, a few pieces of clothing, his cat and bird. Left behind a lifetime's collection of rare music 78s, books, etc. It was his life or his things as things played out there. He took a step out in faith, drove cross country with the good will of folks along the way, a few dollars from friends as they were able and finally made it. He faced rejection by his family and let it go, making his friends his family as he moved through life. I will try not to bitter when I say his family just gave the ex carte blanche to take all of his things that he did have ...laptop, cell phone, etc. The only things I really care about are his cats, Timmy, Cassy, and Toby the bird. We are trying to get them taken care of. The one thing I really regret at the moment, is never getting him to put all of his memories on tape, esp. his memories of the music world. He had so many anecdotes of music people he'd either interviewed or known. I'll ask the other friends by email if they have anything written down that he might of shared. Before I met them, my Rog often went to a restaurant called the "Bull Pen" for breakfast in Casper, WY. While there, he struck up a conversation with an older gentleman who lived in a nursing home there. That gentleman was the fiddler, Hugh Farr of the Sons of the Pioneers. Eventually, RogerC, the musician/collector/historian, and my Rog, the engineer, got together with Mr. Farr and made some recordings of him. I sure wish I'd been there for that. Here's a little bit from that website about Mr. Farr: It has been related that during a Walter Winchell interview, the noted conductor Leopold Stokowski was asked whom he considered the greatest natural violinist of the century. Stokowski allegedly replied, "It really must be two musicians - the left hand of Fritz Kreisler and the right hand of that gentleman who plays the violin with the Sons of the Pioneers. I can't recall his name...." (Hear My Song, by Ken Griffis, 1994 p. 107) That's just a small example of the kind of people RogerC would find and bring out, and honour. |
