21 Apr 03 - 06:48 PM (#937361) Subject: emanuel stance From: GUEST,cmalston My 75 year old father, born in the ozarks, just found out that his very unusual name, emanuel stance, was a medal of honor winning buffalo soldier. We cannot imagine where his mother would have heard this name but from a song. I've done an hour or two of searching and it does not seem to be the title of a song, but maybe it will trigger someone's memory. thanks |

22 Apr 03 - 02:16 PM (#937891) Subject: RE: emanuel stance From: MMario He was the FIRST medal of Honor recipient from the 9th Calvary. 1870 found this snippet from The diary of Captain August Corliss "...Christmas Day (1876) 1st Sergeant Emmanuel Stance, Troop F, 9th Cavalry, was murdered between the Post & Crawford last evening, probably by men of his own troop." it could well be that a big thing was made of the 50th anniversary of either his medal or of his death; and the name was remembered from that. |
