(One even sounded like his arrangement with different instrumentation.) That's OK because Barry has been very generous to make them available on the WWW, but there really should be an acknowledgement. I think it's great that we can hear these arrangements and common folk like me can be creative and use all this music on a web page, but a little recognition is in order. |

Quite often a midi collection gets separated from the readme file originally embedded within the collection. Then users re-publish part or all of the collection, and any trail to the originator is both lost. SOmeone else downloads that collection and the cycle repeats. Welcome to the web! Another aspect is that most folks I've ever bothered to contact were unaware that midi file arrangements are protected by copyright, even if the tune itself is in the public domain. To their credit they have also been quite apologetic when informed of the principles that apply. There have been a few sites that indeed sent me on a cyber-rant. They either refused to include an acknowledgement of authorship, or tweaked something (e.g., changed an instrument voice or two) in my midi sequences and then claimed authorship themselves. One even charged money to allow access. As is all too common on the web, the behaviour of a few hurts many. Thankfully, most infringement is done out of simple ignorance. But I must confess that it hurts to see someone else getting cyber-applause for hundreds of hours of my work! No loss of revenue, to be sure, just a little damaged pride. - - - |

(Even though Barry titled it "An Emigrant's Daughter," his words to the tune "The Grenadier and the Lady." I always forget which is which, emigrant and immigrant...) But it really is a lovely story, one I suggest y'all check out. I looked for it at the Contemplator site, but the link to the lyrics didn't work. Since so many people link directly to Lesley's site, and she has to spend a lot of time renaming files, I figured the name just got lost in the shuffle. Sure 'nuf, I found it...http://www.contemplator.com/tunebook/irelandmidi/emigdau.htm In case someone doesn't know how to check authorship of midi files...If you have sequencing software such as Cakewalk, open the file in that program and there is often text describing the name, author, date, etc. Like Barry said, many people just grab a midi from another page, but the author is often still attached, (author's name, that is) as in the case of "An Emigrant's Daughter." |
