To JOE: A Modest Proposal - 3rd Division

Joe - Thanks for the division between the upper and lower regions of the cafe.

I have been a much kinder, gentler soul....as long as I don't stray below, and "they" don't stray above.

You can see how crowded things have become since the

"S"

sifted its way down below. People want MUSIC

PLEASE Consider a "third section" something for Blues and Folk and Theory.PRE-1930's

Goodness! For those who expound that things should be left up top for a while, this one sure hit the bottom half in a hurry!

I hear what you are saying, but I am not at all sure that it would work. Too much fragmentation makes for too many choices. Would we then separate Old Time Country from the rest, then German, Irish, Danish, etc?

If I were going to propose a third grouping ~~ and I am not, then I'd say separate the political conversations (which frequently turn into stressful arguements) from the rest ~~ the recipes, the book conversations, weather, and such which rarely descend into name calling. For example, the discussion on Zane Grey is a really good one, and deserves a lot of attention.

But back to the point. I don't see that fragmenting beyond the two divisions we have would really work. Where would we stop, and how would you find what you were looking for, or how often would you miss something that you would enjoy, if only you had known it was there?

Oh for pity's sake, Greg, leave off. It's just not that big a deal. You really have been in high gear the last few days. Love you, Garg/

I'm with you Dale and Sorcha!!!

Dale - political is all

B.S.

it falls into the same catagory as YOUR computer being "down." In the cosmo of the universe it is nothing, but it you have the ear-of-a-cone...it is a main-stream, mudcat, musical event!

Sorcha - Shouldn't you be reading about now? You know...to help the half-helix of your DNA get through her exams?

When the klattern-kitten-klono is at the wheel.... the "Mudcat Ship" can get a little out of trim

Haven't quit reversed keel to top-mast yet.... but if a more stable hand doesn't come forward soon....in a scwall.... who knows what might happen?

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

What say you Joe - How about shifting the balast? A little more below and a little less aloft?

I don't think we'll be dividing the Forum into more parts than the two we have now. generally, it seems to be working quite smoothly. It appears that this thread started up top, and that a JoeClone moved it here. Administrative and technical threads are, for the present, supposed to be on the top half. Maybe I'll have to talk with the Clones and ask them not to be so quick about moving things. The political discussions and chit-chat should be moved immediately, but I think the borderline stuff should stay where the thread originator put it.
-Joe Offer-

Gargoyle, you'll note, however, that I'm very quick to delete personal attacks. You've been way out of line this week. It's really getting old.

Thank you JOE.

While I "have your eye"....please move the "Art Theime Computer is Down" into the lower regions..

UNLESS, you think it IS MUSCIAL?

No, it's technical, which is being kept up top.

Joe - please consider a division-

MUSIC

FOLK

BS

It will divide the areas that the disruptives can disrupt.

I suggest...no, I IMPLORE...that we start up a third section solely for threads based on fart jokes! This would ghetto-ize Spaw, and that would be funny, IMO.

Then start up a 4rth section for Gargoyle only, and, of course, responses to Gargoyle.

That should about make things perfect around here.

Subject: RE: To JOE: A Modest Proposal - 3rd Division
From: Raedwulf

More seriously, a third division probably would make sense, IMHO. Look at the board guys. The top section is about 3 times the size of the lower. I'm not sure how you reliably divide the top bit, but it does bear discussion.

For instance, I'm rarely looking for tunes or lyrics. First stop-off if I am is the DT, where most things can be found. In the meanwhile, I rarely look at the top half, since the split. Too many 'gatherings' threads I'm not interested in/can't get to, too many Req threads for songs I've never heard of, etc... And I'm undoubtedly missing some stuff that I'd be interested in reading, if only I had the time to wade through & identify it!

Maybe a "Requests & Announcements" / "General" (i.e. anything else) split might work? I dunno. I do know that I'm usually scrolling straight past most of what's on the board because I know that I'm not likely to be interested in it. Just because gargoyle suggested it, doesn't make it a bad idea, y'know! ;)

27 Apr 03 - 04:35 PM (#941458)
Subject: RE: To JOE: A Modest Proposal - 3rd Division
From: Jim Dixon

Gee, if only there could be a section that contains exactly what I'm interested in!

Let's see, I'm not much interested in modern singer-songwriters who don't bother with regular verse forms, or meter, or rhyme, and who can't write complete sentences, so let's move them to the lower section. I can't read Gaelic, so why should I want to see any Gaelic lyrics? Get rid of them. And I'm not interested in children's songs or hymns, so move them down there, too. And parodies are usually boring if you're not very familiar with the original, so let's move them somewhere. And people who are always proposing changes to Mudcat, well, the changes they propose are never helpful to me personally, so I wouldn't miss them. And complainers are just a pain in the ass, so move them somewhere--I don't care where. And people who are always proposing Mudcat gatherings, or announcing future gigs, or telling me about a cool song that's on the radio RIGHT NOW, even though the message may have been posted several hours ago, and anyway it was broadcast in a different country than the one I live in...well, they all have to go. And I hate it when people request lyrics but don't use the "Lyr Req" prefix, so get rid of them, too. And people with tech problems with software that I don't even use, or instruments that I don't play...

That should reduce the upper part of the forum to a useful size. There you go, JoeClones, HOP TO IT.

From: katlaughing

Better yet, Jim, to suit the control issues, why not limit each section to the same number of threads at any given time, so that they match up perfectly!

Raedwulf, many of the lyrics I have found for people have been songs I've never heard of, either. I figure by looking for them, and, if I am lucky, finding them, I not only help someone out, but I also have a chance at learning something new.

OK - Joe - What you know?

Lets make the third division "ACADEMIC" discussion blogs? (because of their scarcity, keep them up for week.)

Then I wouldn't stray as much below, chasing cats and beasts that blow, crow, and snow the dialogues. Not asking much, just a little tweak.

Sincerely,
Gargoyle

A lot of valuable DT material is perhaps being lost because the hydralic mining has increased the water-volume and I fear some "real nuggests" are washing downstream.
