Spanish to English Translation Help???!!

Yes, I've been to Babelfish.

There is a piece for church whose melody I love, and whose first verse I pretty much get, intuitively, from Spanish class years ago. The tune is so pretty that it does not give that cute "De Colores" trite-folky effect at all. When I have used it in church, I have done just that one verse, because I need to clearly understand what I offer. Now I think I have most of the rest of it intuited, too, and Babelfish confirms I'm on the right track.

Next week a lady will visit our church, and it would mean a lot to her and to her daughter if we do this one. Any help to increase or correct my understanding would be a great favor, so that I can introduce it properly. It would be most helpful to have a better sense of the implications of the words used, to have someone share which words I have failed to represent fully. The Babelfish version was weakest in the third verse so I just tried to put myself in the writer's place to feel where s/he was trying to go.

Below is what I have so far, including my version of Babelfish's effort.

Thanks,

~Susan

WITH WHAT CAN WE [RE]PAY?
With what can we [re]pay such immense love--
That you gave Your life for sin?
In exchange receive the humble offering,
The [most] humble offering, Lord Jesus Christ, of my heart.
The [most] humble offering, Lord Jesus Christ, of my heart.

And when the night extends its mantle,
I will fix my tear-filled eyes upon You.
Raising my eyes I will see the stars [filling the sky].
I know that just as the stars look down upon us [forever], You, my loving Father, watch over me.
I know that just as the stars look down upon us [forever], You, my loving Father, watch over me.

With neither gold nor silver can I [re]pay the great sacrifice you did for me;
I have no gift therefore to give you [in thanks] for loving me
Receive my tearful song, and my heart.
Receive my tearful song, and my heart.

How about:
Yo sé que tras ellas cual Padre amoroso,
Tú velas por mí

I know from those stars, such a loving Father
You watch over me

And perhaps:
El gran sacrificio que hiciste por mí
No tengo que darte por tanto amarme
Recibe este canto, mezclado con llanto
Y mi corazón

The great sacrifice you made for me
I have nothing to give you for loving me so
Accept this song, this tearful song
And all my heart

There is an English translation, "O What Shall I Render," that changes to the singular and uses the difficult word render instead of give (pay), etc. I find references to it in Google, but no free text. However, I think your version, with the suggestions by leprechaun, will end up being better and closer to the anon. author's intent.
I know that this song came from South America, but nothing of its history. Not from Mexico, but I have heard it sung by a choir of young men from there who were training for the priesthood.

Yeah, it feels to me like the right sense of "pay" is hard to capture in the translation.... there are some pretty big theological concepts being referenced here, and in Spanish it's elegant and concise, but I think we lack a really comparable single-word expression. In the older prayer book we use (1928), "render" is used, as in "we render most heary thanks" if I recall right... The language has to do with offering what is due and yet unasked, from the giver's sense of right relationship.

Perhaps one sense of the original might be, "What Recompense?" Not poetic, tho! :~) At least I won't be trying to sing the English version!

No-one could pay you with gold or with silver
For such a great sacrifice you made for me
I've nothing to give you, and for this you love me -
Accept this song, mixed with tears; and my heart

Yes it's a bit more serious than some of the songs we sang in Mexico. We sang such timeless classics as:

Yo tengo gozo gozo gozo gozo
En mi corazon
En mi corazon
En mi corazon

Yo tengo gozo gozo gozo gozo
En mi corazon
Porque Cristo me salvo!

and:

Wooo!

The first line works if you translate it as "With what can we PAY FOR a love so huge."

thanks for all the help in understanding this hymn - i can hear what fernando ortega is singing even without the translation, but i wanted to sing it eventually for an english-speaking congregation. all of the ideas presented are very valuable in coming down to a final rendition of the spanish words.

Hi, for me the word "velas" made me cry. It brought back images of a funeral I went to once in mexico...people stayed up day and night for a couple of days "waiting" or "velando" over the body.It really affected me because I was only like 5 years old. I never thought of it again until I heard this song. I also think of the many sleepless nights my grandmother stayed up "velando"...waiting for her sons to come home (they were up to no good, part of a gang and every weekend she would stay up praying that God would protect their lives). So "velas" for me personally is soooo deep, not just a staying up waiting for something or looking over someone but doing so with fervent love and prayer and a desperateness to have the person with you alive and well to touch and hold and love on! The Lord loves us so much and I can't even begin to imagine what the waiting is like for Him until we will to accept his gift of salvation. I can only understand this on a human level as I "velo" or wait on the salvation of my loved ones!

just my two cents,
claudia
