Gordon Bok records Mary Garvey songs

I just got an email from Selkie O'Mira of Timberhead Records, announcing the upcoming release of Gordon's latest CD, called "Herring's in the Bay." She says it includes some songs by Mary Garvey. Would that be the Mudcat's own Mary Garvey? If so, heartiest congratulations!

Aloha,
Mark

I've just gotten my copy through the mail (It wasn't available at the concert). Mary's songs include Astoria Bar, The Boats of Peter's River, and Cannery Shed. Great listening to them. The rest of the songs are wonderful especially One More Morning by Bok.
Congratulations, Mary

Here's the announcement:

Hello from Timberhead!
I thought you'd like to know that Gordon has just released a new album. It's called "Herrings In The Bay" and is a tribute to the independent inshore fisheries which are sadly fading away along with the family farm and other cherishable small businesses. The music is haunting, humorous and beautiful.
Gordon wrote an "oratorio" for a cappella ensemble called "One More Morning" which is sort of a running commentary on a night of purse-seining. I love the changing rhythms of the sea, the net-hauling, the boat engine. It's sung by the highly-esteemed group, The January Men And Then Some, of which Gordon is a member.

That's on the album, along with several songs written by Mary Garvey of the great Northwest, some of Gordon's, songs from Australia, Newfoundland, the Americas and the British Isles. A new version of the much-requested GB oldie, "Herring Croon", graces this album as well.

We've tried a new packaging style this time on the CDs, replacing the plastic jewel box with a cardstock cover full of color and liner notes. It reminds me of the wonderful old LP jackets with graphics, photos and lyrics - I missed that when we went to cassettes! Anyway, we thought we'd try something different, and the result is stunning.   Check it out at www.gordonbok.com. It's a visual treat to match the musical one.

If you'd like a copy of "Herrings In The Bay", you can order it online with a credit card at www.gordonbok.com or by mail with a check or money order using the address below. The CD is $16, cassette $10. (Add for shipping: $4 US, $6 Canada, $8 other countries).

Happy Spring, wherever you are!

Congrats Mary! You deserve it. Now, how about a Mary Garvey CD?
The Boats of Peter's River is here in the Forum, soon to be in DT.
How about it, Mary, can I post Astoria's Bar, too? (and Cannery Shed
when I get through transcribing it)?
Mary has just bunches and bunches of wonderful songs. I keep taping them and maybe soon I'll get more of them transcribed. She's hard to
keep up with.
Blessings,
Barbara

Thread drift:

Over the years I've come to realise that Gordon Bok is a big favourite for a number of Mudcatters.

I'd like to hear him, but with money being very tight right now, I can't justify buying a CD because several people that I don't know think he's great.

Are there any audio clips available online? (even 30 second real audio ones)

I've tried www.gordonbok.com but there don't seem to be any there.

Anywhere else that I might look?

Thanks

Ed

CONGRATS MARY and WAY TO GO!!!!!!

This is just the best. I hope you have a huge smile on your face!!!!! If not you can borrow part of the one I've got on mine! Treat yourself to something special and tell us all about it!!!!

Ms O'Meara is very probably the "Great Selkie" in person. It seems completely fitting that she has found quiet harbor and a place of repose at Timberhead.

I was just about to order a copy of this CD. Now I think I'll go and do that very thing. Mr. Bok is a great artist.

The Boats of Peters River was the second song that Mike Regenstrief played on Folk Roots & Folk Branches this morning from CKUT in Montreal. The first was Sweet William & Lady Margaret by Jean Ritchie.

Congratulations, Mary. I've been listening to "Herrings in the Bay" for about three weeks now and noted to myself and to friends on several occasions what a talented songwriter you are. Gordon knows how to pick 'em! I'm especially partial to "Boats of Peter's River"--an exceptionally well-crafted song. The others are also fine songs, although I have to admit that I enjoyed them better with Gordon's solo singing of them in his recent Washington, DC, concert than I do with the big chorus (especially on Astoria Bar, where the words get a little muddied by the numerous voices). The chorus obviously is having fun, though, both on that song and on "Cannery Shed." Hooray for you!

I'm listening to Herrings in the Bay. Lovely stuff. I only have one problem with it, his voice is so deep my cd player is shaking like a dog shittin' razor blades.

He was at my other folk club last night & was fantastic. As I was in the front room collecting the money I didn't hear the entire concert, but enough to know what a great entertainer he is.

The only problems was the CDs sent to his previous host didn't arrive, so we couldn't buy 'em!! buggerbuggerbugger. My wallet was full of money, so all I have to do is contact another of of his hosts who did receive CDs & get one. Which means waiting patiently.

And what is even worse, I returned a heap of CDs to Bob Bolton last night (including Harbours of Home).

sandra (looking forward to getting a copy

Yes I was there too - inside watching the concert fortunately. I had never heard him before, and now I understand what all the fuss is about. I was totally moved, both by his voice and that lovely 12 string guitar. I would have bought his new CD too, on the spot, but couldn't. Like Sandra said - buggerbuggerbugger!

I will be reviewing "Herrings In The Bay" in next month's TUNE UP. The review will be posted on Mudcat after it is published and sent to the member/subscribers. I usually send a prepublication copy of the column to the artist but, if she sends me her e-mail address, I will zap one off to Mary Garvey too. She can contact me at musicmic@earthlink.net
