I just ran across this nice website of broadside sheets from Glasgow. Some of the entries include sound files of traditional singers singing the songs.

Glasgow ballad site

Thanks for this Radriano.

It's amazing what other people find on your own doorstep. I live about 100 yards from the collection!!!

The National Library of Scotland has a Broadside Collection up now.

Note that 911 of the "almost 1800" sheets are on the Ballad list. Transcriptions are provided!

Hey, is it just my computer or has anybody else tried to have a listen. I get a message :This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. That was when I tried in Explorer, then I tried Netscape and just got a bunch of nonsense characters - no sounds. And I'm dying to hear the songs!

IE works for me, but Netscape doesn't; I think that Glasgow haven't set the MIME types properly on their web server, so many non-Microsoft browsers don't know what sort of file it is they're supposed to be opening, and assume that they are text. You can add "helper" applications to browsers yourself, but it doesn't always work very well. Easiest thing is to copy the URL for the wma file, then open Windows Media (or any other program you have that will play the file type), go to File: Open URL; and paste in the address.

Wouldn't be necessary if people texted their websites in a range of browsers, but most don't, it appears; even professionals, who really should know better.

Thanks, Malcolm,

I tried that and still could't get past that "Illegal Operation" message. I'll try it from work when nobody's around.
