02 May 03 - 04:35 PM (#945101) Subject: RE: Happy B-Day, Pete Seeger From: Art Thieme I remember the nite that Ray Nordstrand and Norm Pellegrini devoted their entire Midnight Special radio show on WFMT-FM in Chicago to Pete Seeger's music because it was his FIFTIETH BIRTHDAY. That was close to the beginning of my life in this folk subculture. The tapes I made of that show on brand new acetate reel-to-reel tapes (1,200 feet) are now devoid of iron oxide. Sadly, it flaked off slowly and the brittle tape broke 40 too many times from being rewound way too often and too fast. But the man and his music is influencing a whole other generation from the CDs that are the new norm now. Pete, HAPPY BIRTHDAY-----and many, many more !!! Art Thieme |

Bourroughs (Sonny's cousin) into Seattle around 1957 or 1958? You all with stayed us for several days, preparing for a huge concert at the MOORE THEATER. I always remember that it was the concert that apparently broke that BLACKLIST. I also remember how awkward I felt when you placed that long necked banjo of yours on my shoulders. I was about 18 years old, and my arms couldn't even stretch from the first fret to the bridge, Boy, did I feel stupid! And I also remember, and treasure the moment, when you walked into the living room and sang the final verse to "Golden Thread." You had composed it in our guest room. You must, by now, know just how much you are loved and revered. I also suspect that you have had a lifetime of reverence ... more than you would prefer, I suspect. The followihng is from CNN rich r Seeger's new version of protest song NEW YORK (Billboard) --Legendary folk singer Pete Seeger has recorded a new version of his Vietnam War-era protest song, "Bring Them Home." With new verses written by Seeger and Appleseed Recordings founder Jim Musselman, the track was recorded with additional vocals by modern day compatriots Steve Earle, Ani DiFranco, and Billy Bragg, and now includes the line, "The great part of America is that you have to right to speak your mind." "I felt that the song and what Pete says in it have an important message during this time of backlash against entertainers like Tim Robbins and the Dixie Chicks who have simply expressed their views, which is what is needed in a democracy," Musselman said in a statement. "Pete is someone who has always stood up for the First Amendment, going back to the McCarthy era, when he faced a jail term rather than give up his constitutional rights." The updated version of "Bring Them Home" will appear on the two-disc "Seeds: The Songs of Pete Seeger, Volume 3," due in August via Appleseed. The first disc will feature 12 more songs recorded by the artist over the past three years, including "The Dove," the post-9/11 song "Tell It to Doctor King," and "Flowers of Peace," the latter sung by Anne Hills with Seeger. The second "Seeds" disc will be made up of 15 new recordings of songs written or associated with Seeger. Among those contributing that disc are Janis Ian, Tom Paxton, and Holly Near. Seeger -- who on Saturday will celebrate his 84th birthday -- performed a version of "Over the Rainbow" for thousands of demonstrators at a New York peace rally in February. |

I too, tried to play the banjo due to his influence. Couldn't get it because I needed a left hand one. Those were and are hard to find. Pete of late has become sort of a Unitarian. I hope he will like his church of choice. There is a bit of a story about him being forgetful of his banjo one time and not securing it to his luggage rack properly. Anyway, he drove off and...I forget the rest of the story. Perhaps some of you 'catter critters know the reat of it and can relay it to us? |

Last Christmas, I put a poinsettia on my car roof, unlocked the door, got in and drove away. Three miles down the road, I remembered it, came back, and the guy who gave it to me was standing in the door looking puzzled. Felt kinda numb. And, I'm no where near Pete's age. |
