If you don't have a song with riskaidekaphobia in it, then do you have one that sounds like it? Fear of the number 13 or Friday he 13th.?

Damn. I know the song you are looking for. I'm sure I saw a reference to that song, on line, within the last year or so, but I think the title is different. This time, found one (a) reference to such a song in a discography of old pop tunes, indicating it was recorded in 1948.   Lots of luck.

Triskadecaphobia is the name of a contra dance
by a woman who used to call the dances in chico.
not a song, though.

I'm a triskaidekaphiliac, myself...

Here's the contradance, by Kirston Koths--it was first danced on Friday, January 13th, 1984

It seems that the song you're looking for was written by Ervin Drake, Irvin Graham, and Jimmy Shirl. But I couldn't find the lyrics, sorry.

Aloha,
Mark

I found a reference to a song by this title by Ervin Drake, but couldn't find any lyrics, so don't know if it's the one you want.

alison,

Do you know Blue the Shearer's poem. It's not on his site and a quick look around the net shows it may not be available out in the ether.

Well, here's a bio of Ervin Drake that says he lives in New York. And here's a page on him in the Songwriter's Hall of Fame (caution: link won't work with Netscape 4.x). That page has an email link, and I'll bet if you sent them an email they would be able to give you more info about the song, or put you in touch with Drake. He sounds like a pretty impressive guy. The page says he's currently working on a revival of his Broadway show, "What Makes Sammy Run?"

Aloha,
Mark

I'm listening to it as I type. It's been recorded by Hamilton, Ontario blues/jazz/folk/whatever national treasure Jackie Washington on his Borealis CD "Midnight Choo-Choo". Pop on over to this link:

http://www.borealisrecords.com/cd_choo_choo.html

and you can listen to the whole song. Enjoy!

Should add, a propos of nothing, back when I was driving cab our dispatcher asked if anyone knew what triskadecaphobia was (it was a slow night). Someone immediately jumped back with "fear of crackers"!

Google gives:
triscadecaphobia - 84 hits
triscadekaphobia - 1 hit
triscaidecaphobia - 1 hit
triskadecaphobia - 101 hits
triskadecophobia - 2 hits
triskadekaphobia - 434 hits
triskadekophobia - 9 hits
triskaidecaphobia - 64 hits
triskaidekaphobia - 2820 hits
triskaidekophobia - 17 hits

Of course, most of those have nothing to do with music.

Lyrics transcribed from the sound file at http://www.borealisrecords.com/cd_choo_choo.html
(I give the title exactly as they give it.)

TRISCADECAPHOBIA

Triskaidekaphobia,
I got triskaidekaphobia,
And triskaidekaphobia
Has got me.

I open doors for claustrophobia,
And I wear glasses for myopia,
But that triskaidekaphobia
Won't let me be.

Now one, two, and three, they don't bother me,
And neither does four, five, six, and seven.
But I can't conceal the fear that I feel
When I hear the number that's two plus eleven.

I'll be living in utopia*
In a glorious utopia*
If triskaidekaphobia
Sets me free.

[*I think one of these words should have been "euphoria."]

I have Blue the Shearer's Poem. It's in a book of his called "Blue the Shearer - The Selection":

                         Triskaidekaphobia
                     I'm not superstitious, but...

If you're triskaidekaphobic, then this is your big day.
A day designed for triskaidekaphobics, (so they say)
Is BLACK FRIDAY. The thirteenth. So watch out what you do,
Or triskaidekaphobia could be the death of you.

Be very, very careful of what you undertake,
The consequences could be dire. The decision that you make
Should have no element of risk. For surely you're aware,
That this is Friday, the thirteenth. Take very special care.

Not that I'm susceptible to silly superstition,
But some folk are. So my advice: Consider your position.
It may be just some oldwives' tale, but you just watch your back.
Don't cross your knives upon your plate. Don't step upon a crack.

Don't go too close to mirrors. Those shiny sheets of glass
May crack, and cause misfortune. So shun them when you pass.
Of course, this means no mirror when you go to shave your chin,
So keep a basin near at hand to do your bleeding in.

Don't walk beneath a ladder, you may get splashed with paint.
For on Black Friday, the thirteenth, fortunate you ain't.
And be alert, and look around for black cats on this day.
For bad results are forecast, if one should cross your way.

If salt is spilled, then take a pinch, and toss it down your back,
Some say it will protect you from Black Friday type attack.
All your friends will laugh and jeer, but you'll say:"That's alright,
I only have to keep it up 'til twelve o'clock, to-night."

And just consider what you say. The person that you're rude to,
May be a special kind of witch. The kind that I allude to
Can turn you into cabbages, or make you very poor.
Remember. This is Friday, the thirteenth. I said before,

That triskaidekaphobia, (the terror of thirteen)
Is very rife, this day of days. A pretty dreadful scene.
So watch yourself in traffic, in the kitchen, everywhere.
For triskaidekaphobics, there is danger in the air.

Ah! Triskaidekaphobia. I just learned the word today.
And from here on in, I'll try to find excuses, just to say
Triskaidekaphobia. It just rolls off the tongue.
I'll say it daily, and enjoy the pleasure that it brung.

I'll buy a lottery ticket, and I'll call it: Triskaidek.
And when it wins, I'll take it all in cash, and not by cheque.
And really, I don't believe in luck, when all is done and said,
But just the same. Black Friday. I think I'll stay in bed.

I've never heard it sung, and I very much doubt I ever will.

Jenny

Nothing could go wrong today
I told myself with firm belief,
Almost choking in the bathroom
On a set of my wife's false teeth.

Nothing could go wrong today
And of this I was fairly sure,
Fetching the milk off the step
Trapping the cat inside the door.

Nothing could go wrong today
I possessed a determined will,
Coughing on the smoke from
My burnt toast under the grill.

Nothing could go wrong today
And I could not be more certain
On sitting down I heard a crunch:
My glasses gone for a burton.

Nothing could go wrong today
I trusted in my own conviction,
Throwing in the rubbish bin
The council's notice of eviction.

Nothing could go wrong today
But my wife just shook her head,
And like every Friday the 13th
I undressed and returned to bed.

On the Jackie Washington version (that Jim transcribed from Borealis Records) the sleeve notes don't give a writer but say it was from the repertoire of Les Brown and his band of Renown.
