Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire

06 May 03 - 08:35 AM (#946894)
Subject: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire
From: John J

A new singaround is starting tomorrow (Wednesday) evening at the Railway, Heatley, near Lymm, Cheshire. Entitled 'Song in the Snug', it's intended to be primarily singing of traditional songs, along with the odd tune.

The beer is very good: Tim Taylors Landlord, Boddingtons, and also a good guest beer.

There is currently a folk club at this pub on Thursday evenings. 'Song in the Snug' is not intended to compete with the club, but to supplement it by attracting those who prefer traditional songs of the British Isles.

The room is small enough to feel cosy, big enough to fit plenty in, and as it's the 'snug' it is actually part of the pub so it may not always be possible for it to be very quiet when singing.

John

Can I bring my bodhran?

Should be there JJ

If it is the room on the left as you enter the pub it is a great room

The noise should not be a problem - if it gets too noisy to sing we can resort to talking and drinking.

Are you running it JJ, or will it run it's self?

Forgive my ignorance! What exactly is a singaround? What sort of "traditional" songs would be sung? Are the songs ones that everybody know already? Does everybody join in the choruses?

Puzzled: A singaround is what is sounds like; a group of singers sat around the room, each having a turn at singing. What sort of tradional songs? More difficult to answer......traditional ones? Come along and see, or listen, or better still: sing! I'm sure some of the songs will be known by some of the company, equally some may not be known. It would be nice to think that if chorus songs are sung, everbody would join in. Please come along if you can, you will be most welcome.

AG: I'm not sure who's running it, probably the people who turn up!

John R: yes it is the room on the left, I look forward to seeing you tomorrow.

Noreen: Hello Noreen! Fancy a sing?

JJ

Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire
From: Noreen

Ignorance forgiven!

"Come along and find out" is the obvious answer, if you're interested!

If I were there I would probably ask JJ to sing 'Young Banker' because I like him singing it, Schantieman will likely sing a shanty or two, or a Keith Marsden song, John Routledge might sing 'Dol-li-a' and I might well sing a 42- verse ballad about abandoned females dying for love and thwarted suitors and roses and briars...

(Don't know about everybody, it's not compulsory, but yes, people do join in the choruses, where there are choruses.)

Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire
From: Noreen

Would love a sing, JJ, as ever, but will be listening to son playing trumpet, representing his school in a competition organised by the Rotary.
So, Fanfare for the Common Man rather than Young Banker for me tomorrow!

I'm hoping to be at the Red Bull in Stockport on Thursday though- would be nice to see you there, if two nights on the run were possible.

John J, I'd love to come to this but I can't manage tomorrow. I hope that there will be another session - next week? next month? Do let us know, and good luck for tomorrow's singaround.

Hi Matthew. Hope you can make it soon. Should be a good do. The room acoustics are wonderful - I secretly sang a verse in there a couple of months ago :0) Roll on tomorrow!!

I hope JJ doesn't sing Young Banker; he's always pinching my songs.
Mathew, if all goes well we hope to have another one in two weeks time, so come along if you can.

Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire
From: Bernard

The acoustics in the room have been sorted - Paul's put poison down and set traps!

Erm... technicackly, a 'trad' song is one of anonymous origin, and usually there is more than one version of the same song extant. Some people's definition seems to include songs which have been sung often even though the writer is known... stretching a point!!

Hope to be there, folks!

06 May 03 - 08:07 PM (#947392)
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire
From: Noreen

Your song? Did you write it then, Alan? Gosh, you must be old....

Bernard, in this case, I don't think anyone would keep to that strict definition- I suppose most songs will be "in the traditional style"

07 May 03 - 04:49 AM (#947645)
Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire
From: GUEST,Alan

Noreen, sorry I can't tell you if I wrote it because Bernard says a traditional song has to be of "anonymous origin". And yes I am very old...or I bloody feel it this morning.

..... these kind of events need to monitored. Too many new songs and well..... security can be hired from Tradviggroup*, they will interogate songs for heritageness and take appropriate action. * Tradviggroup are a subsiduary of Rentokill.

..... but then again fun can also be had on a Thursday evening at Chorlton Folk Club, South West Manchester Cricket Club, Ellesmere Road, Chorlton

I've seen this thread too late to put the info in Folkal Point, even as a stop press item (it's now 7.40pm UK time). Please let me know when the next session is, and the frequency, so I can give it some publicity. Also, details of who's organising it (previous experience tells me if there's no designated organiser a session soon descends into chaos, although I'll be happy to be proved wrong...). Have fun tonight.

I really enjoyed it; the accoustic in the room is excellent and everybody made a really good contribution. A great start; thanks everybody for comming. JJ spent that much time sampling the landlord that he missed the Black Sheep on draught!

I can confirm that there will be another on 21 May, and we have also penciled in for 4 & 18 June.

We don't really have a boss Joan, but I take your point that it could all fall apart if no one looks after it. So I'll take responsibility for rounding people up and making sure that the room is available for us.

Hello Lucy!
Yes It's me. What a pleasant surprise you can email me directly if you need to: john.jocys@btinternet.com .

Let me know when you're coming up and I'll do the required research and provide you with a plan.

I hope you're all well, we won't be able to do Wadebridge this year 'cos I was too late in getting my holidays in :-(

The singaround t'other night was really very good indeed, with superb singing in very good company, a rather nice beer. Perhaps your visit to Macc will coincide with one of the singarounds....I hope so.

Cheers,

John

I'll not be able to make it to Wadebridge either this year - got my nephew's wedding to attend that weekend.

Thanks for the publicity Joan, you can put my number in as the contact 01625 861042. The pub number is on The Railway Folk Club's web site (www.railwayfolkclub.co.uk)

If the next one is half as good as the first one it will be superb! I'll check out the Black Sheep next time.....I suppose I could always slum it and drink Landlord like wot Madonna does. I'll be on my bike again (for the exercise you understand).

The room is booked and we're raring to go!

The only problem is that the Black Sheep have all gone astray. But they have been replaced by Geriatric Spotty Chickens (my favourite), so you'll be wobbling even more than usual.

For those who asked at the folk club last Thursday, we are not doing the same thing as the Folk Club. I can only repeat JJs words that it is primarily for those who want to sing/listen to/talk about TRADITIONAL FOLKSONG in a quieter setting, with the odd pint of good ale to keep us going.

That was a very enjoyable evening, with a good variety of singers and songs, and a good appreciative audience.
The Railway clientele was intriguingly bizarre that night;- comprising hardcore folkies, cyclists, and pigeon fanciers as well as the usual underage* alcopop drinkers on the pool table.
It was nice to meet so many old and new friends, and to hear so many interesting songs. Alan, thanks for bringing back memories of Harry Cox with your "Australia", even though I break out in giggles every time over the line about 'entering the bush of Australia'. Harry - loved the Prickly Bush, and its good to meet you at last. John (aka Geordie) you've found a real power in your delivery so that "Sorrows Away" & "Blackleg Miner" both were really effective. John J sang more verses of "The Cuckoo's Nest" than I'd ever heard, and the singer on my right who added a new line to "Blackbirds and Thrushes" deserves to be shot commended. It was also lovely to hear Sophie Legg's "Catch me if you can" sung so sensitively. Great to hear Helen who has obviously been inspired by her Sam Pirt masterclasses. And Diz, good to hear you again, after welcoming you to Mudcat all those months ago, I liked your "Bleezin' Blind Drunk" very much, as well as the way you pulled the pigeon song out of your memory.
I'm previously engaged for 4 June, but I'll be there again for 18 June.

Another very successful and most enjoyable evening and everybody seemed to enjoy it. Good company, good singing, and excellent Old Speckled Hen (even though I could only sample half a pint of it 'cos I was driving). From the resposes it seems that everybody enjoyed it as much as I did; I can't believe it's going so well.

If it stays as hot as it currently is we'll have to get Bernard to stand on JJs back and open some windows. We could then wedge them open with a bodhran. Or we could just sit on the lawn and consume copious amounts of the guest beer.

We've tentatively (?!) settled on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, to make it easier for people to keep track.

This will mean occasionally there will be a gap of two weeks between sessions, but that just allows a bit of extra learning time for HelenJ!

So the next one is July 9th...

Thanks for reminding me of that Bernard, I couldn't remember what we'd finally agreed - must be the effects of the excellent Crag Rat beer.
Anyway, I'm glad it's that week because I'm on hols the following week and I don't want to miss one.
Once again it was a cracking night with lots of good singing and excellent selection of songs. It puts me to shame, so I'll have to learn some propper songs and stop doing those shanties and chorusy things.

I think the star turn is the Helen and JJ double act!! Hysterical!! Never realised how amusing the 'Wizard' could be!! Helen had her prompt sheet, but no spectacles, and JJ was trying to prompt but didn't know which bit she was up to!! Added to which, Helen kept forgetting the tune!

Anyway, Al, if you don't do shanties and chorusy things, you will have your licence revoked - and that can prove very painful in the Trussocks!

It's very refreshing to hear everyone making the effort to dredge up great songs from dim and distant memory, or learning 'new' ones - and making such a good job of it!

Now, what was I supposed to be doing? Work? Wassat, then?!!

Re. the Cicely Fox Smith discussion last night...she was born in Lymm on the 1st. of February, 1882. Her father was a barrister at law, Eichard Smith B.A.

Thanks Harry, but 1882 doen't bring up any nice round numbers for a celebration - or not until 2032 (150 years) which is a bit too long to wait! She died in 1954 - could we commemorate her next year? Apparently Danny MacLeod gave a talk at Lancaster this Easter, did anbody catch it?
There were a lot of "doom and gloom" songs! - did anybody keep a body count? At a conservative estimate we must have sung about nine or ten deaths and murders, four rapes/seductions, plus one or two illegitimate births.
What are the crime statistics like in Lymm since the singarounds started? Should I call in DI Francis Child to investigate?

I am currently busy investigating the mysterious death of one Jemmy Grove from the north country. However we have had to consider over 300 different accounts of his decease, most of which point at the involvement of a certain Barbara Allen whom we would like to interview.
Some accounts have advised us that she may have already died out of sorrow, but in order to test this we have applied for an exhumation, which will proceed as soon as we have removed the tangled growths of roses and briars from the graves.
When I have sufficient time I would like to consider several reports from Lymm of prolonged accounts of murder, rape, incest, infanticide, and various supernatural occurrences. I am looking for several bearded sandal-wearing males with guitars, and their female accomplices, who may have some useful information.

Must agree..the body count must have been massive last night...no idea how many were on the Barbary pirate ship..(the only deaths I can be held accountable for throughout the entire evening!).

I am loving this Sing in the Snug to death - love the songs; people and general atmosphere - even though I appear to have taken on the role of comedienne! Well I only had the tune that morning courtesy of Bernard - I concentrated so much on remembering it I forgot the words.   (Well - it can happen to anyone - I suppose...)

Have filled my diary (2nd and 4th week) up to the end of the year just in case it slips my memory!! Roll on the next meet and I ' more or less' promise not to cause unseemly larfter in future. Looking forward to Lin and Nic re-appearance.

Everyone - you are terrific!

In total agreement with you, Helen.

It is indeed a turning into a wonderful night--so relaxed and friendly. It matters not one iota whether anyone forgets a verse/tune--or to 'wibble and warble' in the right places. We also love you causing 'unseemly larfter' so we will not hold you to that promise!!!

Nik n Lyn should be back this next week , so even more lovely music to listen too--long may we continue.

Maybe we can also persuade a few others who love the music to come along as well? Matthew seems to think it is worth the journey and Harry and Sara too!

Oh please, Helen we need lots more unseemly larfter, though I suppose the role of comedian/comedienne could be shared out if you want a rest from the position!

Diz - what music? I only come for the beer!!!

Have just got home from Chorley Festival where the ballad session provoked severe carnage; deaths by drowning, poisoning, wee penknife, etc. with the usual quota of rapes-and-pillages.
Ellen Mitchell sang a ballad about a man who feigned his own death in order to seduce a local maid when she came to his wake (NB this is not a recommended technique!) although it does provoke some discussion about which body parts are affected by rigor mortis!

From what I've seen, Matthew, you need to be worrying more about Liquor Mortis!!!

Seriously (?!), the lack of competitiveness is what is making 'Snog in the Guns' so enjoyable. As Harry said, it isn't intense. We've all been to those sort of gatherings...!!

We aren't looking for prissy perfection, we are enjoying the beauty of traditional-style songs in the type of setting that they were mostly intended for. That's why it's so good!

Although most of the songs are Acker Bilk... erm, Acapulco... errrr... unaccompanied, it isn't exclusively so. However, anyone turning up with a Marshall stack and Fender Strat will find we are a tad hostile...!!

You raised a good point John, it's the songs that are important. It's important that we remenber that we go (as Bernard so elequently puts it) to enjoy the beauty of traditional style songs in a setting where they would feel at home. That doesn't mean that there shouldn't be some discussion about the songs or other related topics, such as CFS, but I would hate it to turn into some sort of learned society.

It's good to be able to report that this session now appears to be well established, meeting regularly on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the Snug room at the Railway, Heatley near Lymm. The sessions have been well supported by some very good singers (apart from one or two who have strayed - but I won't mention any names JJ!) and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.

There will be no session on the fourth Wednesday of this month (Christmas Eve), so an extra session is being held on Wednesday 17th next week.

In the absence of our Lord and Master, who was otherewise engaged in entertaining the ladies of the WI, last night's session proved gloriously confusing. The landlord "his reckoning forgot" and had booked a crowd of Serious Anoraks - either the Lymm Shares Club or the Chess Club - into the Snug, so that we poor singers were obliged to seek shelter next to the darts board. From there we were rescued by Helen and invited to join the Bollin Morris for an improvised song and dance session. Our heartfelt thanks go to the dancers for their hospitality, and I hope they enjoyed the songs as much as I enjoyed their playing and dancing.

PS Congratulations to Bernard on the birth of his grand-daughter!

I managed to catch the aforesaid Lord and Master performing with the Grace Darling Singers at Chadkirk Chapel last Saturday night in a delightful performance of West Gallery singing. The setting of this 14th Century chapel reached on foot at the end of a dark lane in the Goyt valley seemingly miles from anywhere was perfect for these songs. And coming out of the chapel at the end felt just like carollers returning home as described by Thomas Hardy in one of the readings at the concert.

The concert was recorded by Grandpa Bernard for the Grace Darling Singers, so those of you who missed it may get another chance.

Anyway I wanted to add that owing to prior commitments (the staff Xmas bash) I can't come the the Singaround this week, so Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to all the regulars (and irregulars!) in the Snug!

Hope everyone else can make it including Alan because I am getting very weary of standing in for him---I find it extremely scary and anyone who runs a folk club has my admiration!

Anyone who enjoys a good cosy atmosphere and songs sung in a 'traditional' style is more than welcome to join us in The Snug at The Railway Hotel, Heatly, Lymm every second and fourth Wednesday in the month. You will be made most welcome by our small but friendly crowd (10 to 12 singers usually).
