06 May 03 - 08:35 AM (#946894) Subject: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: John J A new singaround is starting tomorrow (Wednesday) evening at the Railway, Heatley, near Lymm, Cheshire. Entitled 'Song in the Snug', it's intended to be primarily singing of traditional songs, along with the odd tune. The beer is very good: Tim Taylors Landlord, Boddingtons, and also a good guest beer. There is currently a folk club at this pub on Thursday evenings. 'Song in the Snug' is not intended to compete with the club, but to supplement it by attracting those who prefer traditional songs of the British Isles. The room is small enough to feel cosy, big enough to fit plenty in, and as it's the 'snug' it is actually part of the pub so it may not always be possible for it to be very quiet when singing. John |

If I were there I would probably ask JJ to sing 'Young Banker' because I like him singing it, Schantieman will likely sing a shanty or two, or a Keith Marsden song, John Routledge might sing 'Dol-li-a' and I might well sing a 42- verse ballad about abandoned females dying for love and thwarted suitors and roses and briars... (Don't know about everybody, it's not compulsory, but yes, people do join in the choruses, where there are choruses.) |

Erm... technicackly, a 'trad' song is one of anonymous origin, and usually there is more than one version of the same song extant. The Railway clientele was intriguingly bizarre that night;- comprising hardcore folkies, cyclists, and pigeon fanciers as well as the usual underage* alcopop drinkers on the pool table. It was nice to meet so many old and new friends, and to hear so many interesting songs. Alan, thanks for bringing back memories of Harry Cox with your "Australia", even though I break out in giggles every time over the line about 'entering the bush of Australia'. Harry - loved the Prickly Bush, and its good to meet you at last. John (aka Geordie) you've found a real power in your delivery so that "Sorrows Away" & "Blackleg Miner" both were really effective. John J sang more verses of "The Cuckoo's Nest" than I'd ever heard, and the singer on my right who added a new line to "Blackbirds and Thrushes" deserves to be I'm previously engaged for 4 June, but I'll be there again for 18 June. |

Added to which, Helen kept forgetting the tune! Anyway, Al, if you don't do shanties and chorusy things, you will have your licence revoked - and that can prove very painful in the Trussocks! It's very refreshing to hear everyone making the effort to dredge up great songs from dim and distant memory, or learning 'new' ones - and making such a good job of it! She died in 1954 - could we commemorate her next year? Apparently Danny MacLeod gave a talk at Lancaster this Easter, did anbody catch it? There were a lot of "doom and gloom" songs! - did anybody keep a body count? At a conservative estimate we must have sung about nine or ten deaths and murders, four rapes/seductions, plus one or two illegitimate births. What are the crime statistics like in Lymm since the singarounds started? Should I call in DI Francis Child to investigate? |

However we have had to consider over 300 different accounts of his decease, most of which point at the involvement of a certain Barbara Allen whom we would like to interview. Some accounts have advised us that she may have already died out of sorrow, but in order to test this we have applied for an exhumation, which will proceed as soon as we have removed the tangled growths of roses and briars from the graves. When I have sufficient time I would like to consider several reports from Lymm of prolonged accounts of murder, rape, incest, infanticide, and various supernatural occurrences. I am looking for several bearded sandal-wearing males with guitars, and their female accomplices, who may have some useful information. |

Have just got home from Chorley Festival where the ballad session provoked severe carnage; deaths by drowning, poisoning, wee penknife, etc. with the usual quota of rapes-and-pillages. Ellen Mitchell sang a ballad about a man who feigned his own death in order to seduce a local maid when she came to his wake (NB this is not a recommended technique!) although it does provoke some discussion about which body parts are affected by rigor mortis! |

Seriously (?!), the lack of competitiveness is what is making 'Snog in the Guns' so enjoyable. As Harry said, it isn't intense. We've all been to those sort of gatherings...!! We aren't looking for prissy perfection, we are enjoying the beauty of traditional-style songs in the type of setting that they were mostly intended for. That's why it's so good! Although most of the songs are Acker Bilk... erm, Acapulco... errrr... unaccompanied, it isn't exclusively so. However, anyone turning up with a Marshall stack and Fender Strat will find we are a tad hostile...!! |

It's important that we remenber that we go (as Bernard so elequently puts it) to enjoy the beauty of traditional style songs in a setting where they would feel at home. That doesn't mean that there shouldn't be some discussion about the songs or other related topics, such as CFS, but I would hate it to turn into some sort of learned society. |

11 Dec 03 - 04:41 AM (#1070047) Subject: RE: Singaround, Lymm, Cheshire From: Matthew Edwards It's good to be able to report that this session now appears to be well established, meeting regularly on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the Snug room at the Railway, Heatley near Lymm. The sessions have been well supported by some very good singers (apart from one or two who have strayed - but I won't mention any names JJ!) and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. There will be no session on the fourth Wednesday of this month (Christmas Eve), so an extra session is being held on Wednesday 17th next week. In the absence of our Lord and Master, who was otherewise engaged in entertaining the ladies of the WI, last night's session proved gloriously confusing. The landlord "his reckoning forgot" and had booked a crowd of Serious Anoraks - either the Lymm Shares Club or the Chess Club - into the Snug, so that we poor singers were obliged to seek shelter next to the darts board. From there we were rescued by Helen and invited to join the Bollin Morris for an improvised song and dance session. Our heartfelt thanks go to the dancers for their hospitality, and I hope they enjoyed the songs as much as I enjoyed their playing and dancing. PS Congratulations to Bernard on the birth of his grand-daughter! |

The setting of this 14th Century chapel reached on foot at the end of a dark lane in the Goyt valley seemingly miles from anywhere was perfect for these songs. And coming out of the chapel at the end felt just like carollers returning home as described by Thomas Hardy in one of the readings at the concert. The concert was recorded by Grandpa Bernard for the Grace Darling Singers, so those of you who missed it may get another chance. Anyway I wanted to add that owing to prior commitments (the staff Xmas bash) I can't come the the Singaround this week, so Merry Christmas and A Happy New Year to all the regulars (and irregulars!) in the Snug!
