12 May 03 - 08:12 PM (#951378) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Cords for Annachie Gordon??? From: michaelr BTW, have a look at tablEdit, as recommended by Guest Seacat. Looks like a cool program. Among other things, it will play a tablature tune while highlighting the notes as they sound. |

13 May 03 - 12:22 PM (#951831) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Cords for Annachie Gordon??? From: Maryrrf I've noticed several times in the first line "Harking" is bonnie. I think it's actually supposed to be "Buchan"? |
13 May 03 - 12:46 PM (#951846) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Cords for Annachie Gordon??? From: Malcolm Douglas Yes, it is. Mary Black learned the song (I think via her brother) from Nic Jones (who re-wrote it substantially), and a mis-hearing seems to have crept in somewhere along the way. |
13 May 03 - 07:04 PM (#952101) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Cords for Annachie Gordon??? From: michaelr That's quite a "mishearing" -- from Buchan to Harking! Can anyone shed light on the origins of the name Anachie? I've never seen it anywhere but in this song. Cheers, Michael |
13 May 03 - 08:08 PM (#952137) Subject: RE: Chord Req: Cords for Annachie Gordon??? From: Malcolm Douglas Auchanachie (or Auchinachie) is a placename; a surname is derived from it. Annachie is also a placename (both are in Aberdeenshire) but may also be a contraction of Auchanachie. Opinions differ. The Harking mistake seems to be Mary Black's fault, but Loreena MacKennitt and her fans have spread it very widely. MacKennitt's website quotes lyrics with all manner of annoying errors, and typically fails to credit Nic Jones (or anybody else, for that matter). |

10 Oct 21 - 11:24 AM (#4122510) Subject: RE: Chords Req: Annachie Gordon From: GUEST Years and years later ... I have copies of the chords to the "modern" (aka, Nic Jones) melody, and the music to the melody as sung by Joe Rae. Is there a melody to this song transcribed in Child's book - or any other printed source? If so, has anybody recorded it? I guess I'm wondering what the "original" tune used for the ballad sounds like ... although Nic's arrangement is gorgeous and probably can't be improved upon! |
11 Oct 21 - 11:08 AM (#4122616) Subject: RE: Chords Req: Annachie Gordon From: GUEST,Rigby Bronson prints one melody, which comes from Dean Christie and which he therefore considers a bit suspect. Nic Jones' melody is recognisably based on it, though not identical. |
13 Oct 21 - 12:32 PM (#4122799) Subject: RE: Chords Req: Annachie Gordon From: GUEST,Don Meixner Correct me if my thinking is wrong. Buchan as a place name and Buchan as a clan name all are found in and around Aberdeen. Lord Salton (Saulton Saltoun) also claims a historical connection to Aberdeen. Aberdeen claims a good bit of sea coast. So when the singer, storyteller sings, Buchan is Bonny and there lives my love it isn't a stretch to think she is starting the song by saying her love comes from a nice place in the North East coast of Scotland somewhere between Peterhead and Dundee. American songs are no easier to search out even if I do know my own brand of English a little better. Don |
