Tech: More Cookie Problems

One more time! I can't get to the help forum, or the org. address, but I can get in on IP number. Only problem site is Mudcat, Annexe is OK, so it's not my cookies. Call the server again? DNS recognition again? Anybody else having problems?

How far is it to the Lakota Reservation, Sorch? Perhaps the problem is not a technical one?

Sorcha -

I'm still suspicious of your new email setup.

Your browser and your email connection setups can be different, and somewhat independent of each other. Either or both can be set to "connect" automatically, whenever there is an interruption with the ISP/email service, whenever a connection is needed, or only when you tell it to connect.

One of your programs is connecting, and works. Any interruption allows both of the programs to attempt to hook back up, and if the other one wins the race, nothing works. The next interrupt may send you back to the original connection, which does work. In effect, you're connecting to two different ISPs, one of which is a full-service ISP and the other is just an email post.

One of these needs to be setup to "restore connection" and the other to NEVER make the connection on its own. There are several options for the second one (probably the email), but the "always use existing connection" is one possibility.

Maybe...???

John

Well I have only had one unaccounted for problem in two years. But then I am still using Win98/IE5.0 (mostly to ensure my own website cresby.com can be seen by as many as possible)

Is this a browser/OS thingy? Who is using what?

When you first turned on your new machine you likely set up a connection to the Internet, and you've probably changed it if you've changed the way you hook up. You can get to your Internet connection setup by clicking "Tools" and "Internet Options" in IE, and select the "Connections" tab. Then there's a "setup" button that gets you into putting in all the stuff about who your ISP is, what kind of connection your have, etc. (I'm not recommending that you change anything there now.)

Usually, when you set this up, it will connect you to an ISP, and you'll get instructions - which you follow(?) and you get an Internet connection.

For a dial-up connection, you can set up to only connect when you open IE, and to close the connection when you close IE. For something like a DSL, or at your option for a dial-up, you can set it up to always "reconnect" any time the connection "burps" or is lost. There are several "intermediate" possibilities" as well.

The same sort of setup happens when you go to get an email hookup, but it's disguised as "set up an account." You'll still connect to the account host, and follow their instructions, but part of the process is setting up the instructions your machine will follow when it "connects" to send/receive email.

An email connection is often set up to "always use existing connection," which means in some cases that you have to open IE (to make the web connection) before you can use OE. Some email hosts will give you instructions to allow you to connect to them, independent of your connection through your ISP to the internet - just on the assumption that's what you need.

If you open OE first, and it makes the hookup to your email host, when you open IE there's already a "web connection." Since "the line is busy" IE can't make it's own connection, so it tries to use the one that's there. The email host may not be equipped to act as a full ISP, so nothing works.

If you open IE first, and it connects to your ISP, then OE should use that connection, and will be "passed" to your email host - and everything should work. Any interruption in the connection, though, may let both IE and OE "race" to see who gets re-connected first, and if OE wins, you're back to nothing works. At the next "burp" in the connection, the race is on again, and things may work - if IE gets there first, or not - if OE wins again.

The whole point is that your Internet connection, with your ISP, and your email connection with your email host can be setup so they will work independently. They should be set up to work together.

Since your problems began shortly after you set up a new email account, I'd suggest that the setup your new email host gave you for your email may have created a conflict between your two systems, web and email, and they are the ones to talk to - at least to make sure that they gave you a "compatible" setup. This should be fairly simple to check out, if you can describe to them what's been happening. If they can assure you that their setup doesn't try to make it's own connection, then at least you've eliminated them from the suspect list.

John

OK,John, my e mail account says "Any Available" The Connections tab in IE shows an empty white box, and no options available except the "Set Up" button. Should I click it? Should we take this to e mail since I can't rely on PM right now?

13 May 03 - 09:02 PM (#952163)
Subject: RE: Tech: More Cookie Problems
From: JohnInKansas

Best bet, if available, would be a 'phone contact with your email host. They may be completely innocent here, but you need to rattle their rockin' chair to make them confirm that they didn't give you a setting that would make OE try to connect.

The "any available" sounds like what you should have associated with the email, but I don't have WinME to look at.

The main thing is - talk to your email host before you do too much more messing with IE. You're obviously not getting anywhere there.

When you do get back to the IE setup, note that it's not usually profitable to go into the Internet connection setup to try to "correct" a connection. Usually, it's simpler and cleaner just to set up a new connection, with a different "name" but using the same numbers. If you called your present connection "connection to ...." just use "my connection to ...." If you get the new one working, you can delete the old one later.

It is, according to MSN help, essential that you reboot after any connection changes. Microsoft says it isn't necessary, but we've found that settings don't "stick" if you don't, and sometimes they keep only part of a change. Some time ago we had a persistent problem that Microsoft Help couldn't fix, but MSN Help finally told us to reset the connection and reboot and the problem went away (but it's not often that simple.)

You mentioned WinME updates - and I assume that you've run into the changes in how the different "privacy settings" work after some of them. The latest changes seem to make IE very fussy about accepting cookies, even if your Privacy Setting is still set to the same level as before. I assume you've gone into IE, Tools, Internet Settings, Privacy Tab and hit the Edit button to enter "always accept cookies from www.mudcat.org".(?)

Talk to your email host, and get his/her assurance that they understand how you use your system, and that your setup with them is what they recommend, to do what you need to do.

John, my e mail/Ineternet server has assured me several times that this is a Mudcat problem with the Server, not theirs or mine. Now what?? My e mail is wise@communicomm.com if you want to go that way and e mail me your phone #. Thanks fo trying to help.

It seems that I am allowed a cookie before noon Mtn. Time but I have no clue what the time would have to do with it. Nothing, I suspect.

Butting in: Sorch, if it were a problem with Mudcat, you wouldn't be the only one having it. How do they explain THAT?! They may just be trying to get out of having to actually DO anything. (Just my opinion, but I've had enough experience with that tactic to be sensitized to it.)

A quick check with the Mickey$oft Knowledge Base indicates that the "Error 404" is a "file not found" message that should not occur for you unless it happens for a lot of people trying to acces the 'cat - if a mudcat problem was causing it.

In other words, the problem is with the way your machine is asking for the connection - not with how mudcat is offering the connection.

Nearly all of the references to this error message in the KB relate to LAN server setup, proxy servers, and other LAN problems. The majority of problems cited are the result of improper scripting of a "proxy server" or incorrect requests to the "proxy server." There's not much I can offer to help in any of the situations described for this error message - since I simply "don't go there" enough.

If you have high-speed connection, there is likely to be a proxy server built-in somewhere in your connection, and this could cause this error message. If you're using dial-up POTS connection, there shouldn't be a proxy server anywhere in your setup, but if a check mark got placed in the wrong box, your machine may be looking for one that isn't there.

Your ISP should provide a way for you to connect "away from home" - as when you take your laptop down to the nearest truck stop and plug into one of their phone taps. If you're using a hi-speed hookup, you might want to see if you can plug into your phone line and get a connection (through your ISP) that way. You could have someone bring a laptop over to try - or you could try from their place (You'll have to log in, and shouldn't be giving them your password(s) to do it for you?). If you can connect, then the problem is in the interface, or in the setup your machine is trying to use to get through the interface.

Beyond this, there's not much I can think of that I could do to help. The problem appears to be in an area I don't have much experience with.

John

Any other description of your problem?

If you've updated Windows or IE (the free downloads) you may just have a change in cookie tolerance. In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Privacy Tab, click edit and put "www.mudcat.org" in the box, and select "always accept cookies from this site" and see if it helps.

(You can always delete them later - once you've tried it.)

If there's a more specific problem, try the Help link.

Sorcha, IP addresses are not guaranteed to work. On the system here, Max needs to have related a "virtual server" to an IP address. I think www.mudcat.org is the only one set that way.

sorcha, I don't know if the email address I have for you is right but I've done a "whois" search based on that. I find 2 dns servers listed. I can only find an entry for mudcat.org on one of these nameservers (ns2). I don't understand things well enough but guess it could be the cause of your problem.

...and then there are times when the DNS changes get updated a bit TOO soon. When I click on Mudcat, it tries connecting to a completely different IP address, and Mudcat ain't on it. (Yet?)

I'm assuming this is normal, if annoying. Until reality catches up with the DNS registry, I won't have a cookie. WAAAAA!
