Frank Winter from Auckland New Zealand is very seriously ill.
Frank has been a leading figure in the Auckland Folk scene since the 1960s He ran the very well known Poles apart for many years.
He has encouraged and supported countless performers.
And has himself sung and played all these years.
Those who know him, love him . We all hope and pray for a recovery.

May things go well for both Frank and Sheila. I'll light a candle for them when I get home.

The Farewell Shanty (Mervyn Vincent)

It is time to go now.
Haul away your anchor.
Haul away your anchor.
'Tis our sailing time.

Get some sail upon her.
Haul away your halyards.
Haul away your halyards.
'Tis our sailing time.

Get her on her course now.
Haul away your foresheets.
Haul away your foresheets.
'Tis our sailing time.

Waves are breaking under.
Haul away down-channel.
Haul away down-channel.
'Tis our sailing time.

When my time is over,
Haul away for Heaven.
Haul away for Heaven.
'Tis our sailing time.

Farewell Frank.

I learnt "The Farewell shanty" from Erik Ilott.
A good shanty for the passing of shantymen...
Frank will be missed

Julie and I were hoping it wouldn't happen, everyone feels so powerless at a time like this. Yes Frank sang shanties, but he also had a huge repetoir of quite varied songs. In the early days it was invariably "Three score and Ten", It was his singing that inspired me to learn "From the Buller to the Grey". And we all remember his rendition of the priest and the Choir boy He was always a very suportive, very gentle person who posessed a beautiful deep rich voice.
Folkies all over New Zealand are going to miss him greatly. He was such an identity and great human being.
Farewell Frank, and our thoughts are with you Sheila.

I'm told that Frank Winter passed away suddenly two nights ago, a brain haemorrhage. From the Smoke originally, Frank has for three decades been a pillar of folk music in and around Auckland, NZ., and well known to touring musicians.
Another good man gone.       Chris Marden.
I moved this message here from another thread on the same topic.

Being a inhabitant of the Northern Hemisphere, I didn't know Frank But he sounded like a true and dedicated folk personality.

My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

As a former resident of Redd Sullivan's London "Poles Apart" counterpart club, I have a vague memory (it was thirty-odd years ago!) of a contingent from the Antipodes visiting the Tottenham Court Road establishment.

Whether or not Frank was one of them, I don't know, but it is always sad to hear of the passing of a well-regarded singer, and I extend my condolences to his family and friends.

Well known Auckland New Zealand folkie Frank Winter died last Tuesday. Those singarounds won't be the same without him. Hope you make it to 'Fiddlers Green Frank'.

cheers
