Does anyone else have trouble with the computer if Yahoo Messenger is downloaded and installed? Just wondering;I know how to uninstall etc. but it just goobers up my machine badly. Can't even remember exactly what it does, but I have forbidden Them to download it.

Replace it with Trillian... It's a much better IMer that replaces Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, AIM, and will also IRC Chat...

I don't really need an IM program and the kids are moving out soon. Just wondered if it f***ed up other people's computers.

Sorcha, I have it on the machine, but it doesn't load automatically. Jenn opens it once in a while when she knows her sister is on line, but that's about it..I've had no trouble that I can relate to it. Have you considered either non-traditional medicine or a rock crusher to solve your problems?

You should be a politician, Clinton.

You've just given an answer to a completely different question that that which was asked...

Nah, just forbid the kids do download it, and then kick 'em out of the house. If the seemingly on-going spat between Kate and the BF doesn't stop, the Kick will come sooner than planned.

When I read that there was a problem with Yahoo IM, and that THEY (I assumed kids) were forbidden from downing it, I offered a solution... And I offered the easiest solution I could think of, that'd make everyone involved happy....

Asking if one program messes up someone else's PC is irrelevant... Every PC is different... what works on one or most might not work on yours...

"I don't really need an IM program"

Heh... since when is NEED an issue online??

ive had issues with it before...where after downloading it...i would be prevented from going online...as certain network adapters would just disappear off my machine...and so i would fiddle with uninstalling drivers and reinstalling and looking for ghost drivers....and hope to god i could get it...sometimes it worked...after a while i said hell with it and just reinstalled everything...and got rid of yahoo....no more problems.

Clinton IS correct, though, about Trillian...IF you want an IM program, it is the friendliest and most versatile.

Sorcha,

Go into IM and open the preferences and read each carefully. There's a lot in there, and they have it set default to give Messenger/Yahoo the most access to you and your information.

I have it set so that it can never download or upload, so that it never shows I'm online to anyone who isn't in my list of people I talk to (and that's real short). The darned thing will let in anyone who's poking around for someone to chat with otherwise.

I also have it set so that none of the Yahoo web site functionality is in use or installed. It can try to take over your browser if you're not careful.

Other than the fact that it's a pain in the ass, it's a powerful program and can do a lot. I've never tried most of the features (voice, web cam, etc.).

Punch "SpyWare" into Google and you will find it one of the worst.

BTW...GOOGLE .... has begun some interesting "spy things" lately also.
