I have ben looking all over the web for music and/or lyrics to some of Tommy Sands great work. His Singing of the Times is more pertinent today then it was years ago. I have his "There were Roses" but am looking for lyrics for Sing of the Times, Humpty Dumpty was Pushed, Children of the Dole, I'm going back on the bicycle... you just have to hear these.

There were Roses may be the finest irish folk song ever. It's in the database. Any words on sources, homepages, etc. out there in www land would immensely appreciated.

(Is he any relation to Bobby Sands?)

I believe Finbar Furey told me that Tommy is Bobby's brother or nephew. It is indeed one of the most poigniant(sp?) songs ever.

I heard the Sands family recently just outside of Newry, and bought one of the albums - superb! There Were Roses is on it - but also some humourous songs like Don't Call Me Early and The Spade (some written by other family members?) Well worth adding to any repetoire! Also, a very very nice rendition of Banks of the Bann.

Ive had fairly frequent contact with Tommy over the years, and have never been given the impression that he was a close relative of Bobby Sands. Colm is, indeed, his brother. Last time I heard Tommy live was when I took a short walk up over the hill from Doolin to where he was appearing in a local hall. He introduced me that night to one of the funniest guys I have ever met---Crawford Howard. Boab, does this mean you CAN penetrate the accent??? I have one song from the album you mention, Town of Belfast (not quite sure of the title), and I could do with a little help. I'll post it in another thread before long.

I asked Tommy about his family's relationship with Bobby Sands last year (because I'd heard the same), and he told me he'd been a distant cousin. No idea how distant. Probably along the lines of 'we know we're related but our families were never close'.

Kirk, unless the request is somehow related to Tommy Sands it is probably best to start a new thread as people will not realise it is here. Also, you're sure to find 'I'm a Rover' by going to the Digitrad and Forum Search at the top of the threadlist. In fact, according to my files the words come from 'Peggy Gordon'. The verse ends "For when I'm drinking I'm always thinking, Wishing Peggy Gordon was there". Maybe someone has used material from that to extend 'I'm a Rover'.

Regarding Tommy's relation to Bobby Sands: I once asked Tommy's brother Ben about that, and as far as they know, there is no direct relation. However, Ben said that since they are from the same part of the country it is very likely that they have some distant relationship somewhere to Bobby and to any Sands from that area. (An aside to that is that Bobby's brother Sean, who still lives in the north of Ireland, is also a musician and performer).

I've bought the CD "Beyond the shadows" any years ago after a concert of the Sands Familiy in Dresden. It was the last CD and unfortunately it hasn't a booklet - nevertheless I took it.

Does anyone have the lyrics for this song? I know there is an album by the name, but he was at a Children's Crusade in 2000 that I brought my daughter to...it was in Pennsylvania, and he sang this song. Its in my head along with the experience.

You are quite right, Frank. I checked the booklet again. Seeger duets with Sands on the recording. The attribution given in the song heading in the booklet is 'Tommy Sands - Elm Grove Music'. However, the note to the song reads in part: 'I wrote the second verse using some words from an old friend of mine, Pete Seeger, and some words he quoted from his father so I'm delighted that Pete and his grandson Tao were able to join me on this recording'.

It's called The Man With The Cap and was written by Colum Sands.

Some more info from Colum's songbook:

[2000:] A song from the pace and place of growing up. Ryan Road, near Mayobridge in County Down. I had two or three different men in mind when I wrote this song and maybe, for all I know, there were a few others dancing around in there at the back of my memory as well. What I am sure of though is that one of those men was an uncle of mine, a great man who, as far as I can remember, never travelled more than about ten miles from home in his life. He took a big black bicycle with him at all times. I often watched him walking along beside it and came to the conclusion that he took his bicycle with him as much for company as for transport. It was a fine strong bicycle with the standard black bag behind the seat, (the exact size for carrying a loaf of bread), a three speed gear system, dynamo lighting and a decoy bicycle pump. The decoy punp, which wouldn't have blown up a paper bag, was there merely to confuse and perplex any would-be thieves, the "good" pump travelled safely and snugly in the inside pocked of my uncle's great coat. Sunday was the day when his bicycle was most likely to leave Burren and come purring along the Ryan Road before turning down the lane to our house. Uncle Patrick never came in through the door without a generous bagful of minutely detailed and hugely entertaining accounts of who and what he had encountered on his travels that day. His powers of observation taught me from an early age that a five-mile journey by bicycle could be more exciting and colourful than a journey of thee hundred miles by car or five thousand miles by plane. At the end of some of those plane journeys, I have found myself singing this song in many different countries and, wherever I go, people often say to me afterwards, "I knew a man just like the one you were singing about in that song." So, it would seem that there are many "men with caps" out there, each one with his own story to tell. Tattie Bogle you are correct that Ed and Willy should start a new thread - but to help them on their way I think the phrasing of their song is similar to Carrickfergus.

(I speak as a singer, not someone who reads music!)

It also reminds me of another well known (Scottish?) song that a friend sings, and if I could just get the first line into my head I'd remember what it is! -- a song of unrequited love, towards the end he plans to go away to Ingoe, to some lonely valley where womankind cannot be found -- and to put his head to a cask of brandy etc.

See this old age / rubbish memory?!
