Subject: Tommy Sands - Lyrics? Homepage?
From:

I have ben looking all over the web for music and/or lyrics to some of Tommy Sands great work. His Singing of the Times is more pertinent today then it was years ago. I have his "There were Roses" but am looking for lyrics for Sing of the Times, Humpty Dumpty was Pushed, Children of the Dole, I'm going back on the bicycle... you just have to hear these.

There were Roses may be the finest irish folk song ever. It's in the database. Any words on sources, homepages, etc. out there in www land would immensely appreciated.

(Is he any relation to Bobby Sands?)

Thanks. John Hyaduck

alison, I would be happy to mail you the tune. Let me know at mlane@accn.org.

I heard the Sands family recently just outside of Newry, and bought one of the albums - superb! There Were Roses is on it - but also some humourous songs like Don't Call Me Early and The Spade (some written by other family members?) Well worth adding to any repetoire! Also, a very very nice rendition of Banks of the Bann.

Ive had fairly frequent contact with Tommy over the years, and have never been given the impression that he was a close relative of Bobby Sands. Colm is, indeed, his brother. Last time I heard Tommy live was when I took a short walk up over the hill from Doolin to where he was appearing in a local hall. He introduced me that night to one of the funniest guys I have ever met---Crawford Howard. Try and get hold of Crawford's "Diagonal Steam Trap"; if you can penetrate that broad "Belfawast"accent, it's hilarious! Boab

Boab, does this mean you CAN penetrate the accent??? I have one song from the album you mention, Town of Belfast (not quite sure of the title), and I could do with a little help. I'll post it in another thread before long.

I asked Tommy about his family's relationship with Bobby Sands last year (because I'd heard the same), and he told me he'd been a distant cousin. No idea how distant. Probably along the lines of 'we know we're related but our families were never close'.

Opinions vary re Crawford Howard. I , like Boab, think he is hilarious. His parody of "The Green Fields of France" aka "Willie McBride" has given offence to some folkies. Not me, I bust a gut laughing the first time I heard him do it.

Kirk, unless the request is somehow related to Tommy Sands it is probably best to start a new thread as people will not realise it is here. Also, you're sure to find 'I'm a Rover' by going to the Digitrad and Forum Search at the top of the threadlist. (For more info on how to use the Mudcat for maximum results see the FAQ thread at the top of the list.) However, the rest of the words you quote seems to me to belong to a different song. Let's see if this can be sorted out in a new thread. Good hunting!

In fact, according to my files the words come from 'Peggy Gordon'. The verse ends "For when I'm drinking I'm always thinking, Wishing Peggy Gordon was there". Maybe someone has used material from that to extend 'I'm a Rover'.

Subject: Lyr Add: BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN, BICYCLE SONG, etc
From: GUEST,Marian

In my Irish-Folk-Music Band we are playing some songs written by the Sands Family (Tommy, Colum...) and here are the lyrics to this songs:

BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Chorus: It's a brand new day for celebrating
It's a brand new day for music making
and we're on our way there's no more waiting
We're back on the road again

1)The winter it is raging the stormy winds do blow
Hiding in the corner there's nowhere left to go
But suddenly there's changing like a dawning in the sky
The sun is in the morning the light is in your eye

Chorus

2)You were always beautiful but I could never see
So come a little closer and dance along with me
We'll dance the Waves of Tory, we'll dance the Highland Fling
Awake the sound of laughter and make the rafters ring

Chorus

3)It's a rocky road to travel, a stormy hill to climb
But you and I together can make it side by side
For hope is in the morning and love is on the way
We're on the road together and we're ready for the day

2 times Chorus

BICYCLE SONG

1)The day was fine and the sun did shine
but now it's near the evening
and I was driving in my car
not far from near Rathfriland.
I just had paid the road tax
And fire and theft insurance,
When the petrol tank said:"That's all, Frank!"
And this is my conclusion:

Refrain:
I'm going back on my bicycle,
I just can't pay the bills,
I'm going back on the bicycle
Freewheel down the hills.

2)My aunt Jane she took me in
with her blarney and her lingo.
She said, that she would buy the juice
If I took her to the bingo.
But all she ever gives to me
Are lollipops and spangles.
If she wants to go tomorrow,
She can sit up on the handles.

3)You won't go far without a car!
Or so said all the Joneses,
And I went crawling to the bank:
"Would you please give me a loan, sir?"
Ah, curse the day, I made my way
Behind those windscreen wipers,
With oil sheiks and the petrol strikes,
I can't pay the piper.

4)Three thousand pounds I earn each year,
Two Thousand hours I'm striving,
And a thousand pounds I spend on fifteen
Thousand miles of driving.
Now, a ten-mile-drive takes an hour strive,
If you can get my meaning,
And ten miles an hour I could beat
On the bike freewheeling.

Children of the Dole

1)Pictures of the children hanging in the classroom wall,
Frankie Brown's in front of them flower among them all.
Working for the future with all his heart and soul,
Who's the one to tell him, he'll be signing on the dole

Refrain:
But you can't run away, no you can't run away.
No you can't run away from the children of the dole.

2)Pictures of depression in the mirror of the bar,
The dole checks on the counter boys that didn't go too far.
Another dream has ended, another job is gone
Another factory's closing, the boss is moving on.

Refrain

3)Pictures of the minister, appearing on TV,
Rehearsing all the reasons, why the crises has to be.
The arm's race is expensive, more we cannot give,
There's money for the killing, but there's nothing left to live.

Refrain

4)Pictures of the soldier, on the memory card,
He didn't want to fight, but he didn't had a job.
Fighting for the motherland, duty must be done,
The boy who threw the petrol bomb, looked just like his son

Refrain

5)Pictures of the children, hanging in the barracks wall
Frankie Brown's in front of them, the terror of them all.
Standing on the corner, nothing much to do,
First time he's been wanted and he's staring straight at you.

Ending:
But you can't run away, no you can't run away
No you can't run away from the children of the dole.
But you can't run away, no you can't run away.
No you can't run away from the children,
from the children, of the dole.

Your Daughters and Your Sons

They wouldn't hear your music and your paintings were pulled down
They wouldn't read your writing and they banned you from the town,
But they couldn't stop you dreaming and a victory you've won,
For you sowed the seeds of freedom in your daughters and your sons.

Refrain
In your daughters and your sons, in your daughters and your sons,
You sowed the seeds of freedom in your daughters and your sons.

2)Your weary smile it proudly hides the chain marks on your hands
Where you bravely strived to realize the rights of every one.
And though your body's bent and low, a victory you have won,
For you sowed the seeds of justice in your daughters and your sons.

Refrain

3)I don't know your religion but one day I heard you pray
For a world where every man can work and children they can play.
And though you never had your share of the fruits that you have won,
You sowed the seeds of equality in your daughters and your sons.

Refrain

4)They taunted you in Belfast and they tortured you in Spain,
And in the Warsaw ghetto where they tied you up in chains.
In Vietnam and Chile when they came with tanks and guns,
It's there you sowed the seeds of peace in your daughters and your sons.

Refrain

5)Now your music's playing and the writing's on the wall,
All the dreams you painted can be seen by one and all.
Now you've got them thinking and the future's just begun,
For you sowed the seeds of freedom in your daughters and your sons.

Subject: Lyr Add: THERE WERE ROSES (Tommy Sands)
From: GUEST,Marian

Hi again!

I forgot to post "There were roses" written by Tommy Sands. It's one of the songs we don't play although I think it's a very good one, it's one of my favourites right after some songs of the Battlefield Band

THERE WERE ROSES

My song for you this evening it's not to make you sad
It's not for adding to the sorrows of this troubled northern land
But lately I've been thinking and it just won't leave my mind
To tell you of two friends one time who were both good friends of mine
Allan Bell from Benagh he lived just across the fields
A great man for the music and the dancing and the reels
O'Malley lived in South Armagh to court young Alice fair
And we'd often meet on the Ryan Road and the laughter filled the air

Refrain
There were roses
Roses
There were roses
And the tears of the people ran together

Though Allan he was protestant and John was catholic born
It never made a difference for their friendship it was strong
And sometimes in the evenings when we heard the sound of drums
We said it won't divide us for we'll always be the ones
For the ground our fathers ploughed in, the soil it is the same
And the places where we say our prayers have just got different names
We talked about the friends who died and we hoped there'd be no more
It's little when we realized the tragedy in store

It was on a Sunday morning when the awful news came round
Another killing had been done just outside Newry town
We knew that Allan danced up there, we knew he liked the band
But when we heard that he was dead we just could not understand
We gathered at the graveside on that cold and rainy day
And the minister he closed his eyes and he prayed for no revenge
And all the ones who knew him from along the Ryan Road
They bowed their heads and they said a prayer for the resting of his soul

Refrain

Well, fear it filled the countryside, there was fear in every home
When a car of death came prowling 'round the lonesome Ryan Road
A catholic would be killed tonight to even up the score
Oh christ, it's young O'Malley that they've taken from the door
"Allan was my friend", he cried, he begged them with his fear
But centuries of hatred have ears that cannot hear
'An eye for an eye' was all that filled their minds
And another eye for another eye till everyone is blind

Refrain

So my song for you this evening it's not to make you sad
It's not for adding to the sorrows of this troubled northern land
But lately I've been thinking and it just won't leave my mind
To tell you of two friends one time who were both good friends of mine
I don't know where the moral is or where this song should end
But I wonder just how many wars are fought between good friends
And those who give the orders are not the ones to die
It's Bell and O'Malley and the ones like you and I...

So I hope this songtexts will help you for the moment John Hyaduck! I couldn't find the text of Humpty Dumpty Was Pushed on my computer, but I have it somewhere printed. I will search for the paper and then type it in for you!

Bye, Marian

These are the lyrics to COUNTY DOWN by Tommy Sands. The version I have is performed by Danú on their 'The Road Less Travelled' album and it's truly lovely. If anyone has the chords I'd love to have them!
Oh, and Beannachtai na féile Padraig!
Sandra

COUNTY DOWN - Tommy Sands

When you're out walking, and there's no one near you,
But a voice keeps calling and you hear your name,
It's not the leaves or the whispering breezes.
It's me that's calling you back again.

CHORUS: Oh can you hear me? Oh can you hear me
As you roam through lonely London town?
When evening's falling you'll hear me calling,
"Come on home now to the County Down."

Do you remember the fiddlers playing,
The songs and stories the whole night long?
'Tis little then that you thought of leaving.
It seems so strange now that you are gone.

(CHORUS)

The fish are dancing on Clanrye River.
The teams are sporting in old Glenvale.
My heart no longer can lead the cheering.
When you're not playing, it's a different game.

(CHORUS)

I'm always thinking that things are changing,
And that they're building a factory tall,
And young ones needed again in Newry,
But I still need you the most of all.

As for 'There Were Roses' chords (beautiful song! see Cara Dillon's album 'Sweet Liberty')

I play on Capo 1

My [G] song for you this evening it's [C] not to [D] make you [G] sad
Nor for [Em] adding to the [D] sorrows of our [C] troubled Northern [G] land

Regarding Tommy's relation to Bobby Sands: I once asked Tommy's brother Ben about that, and as far as they know, there is no direct relation. However, Ben said that since they are from the same part of the country it is very likely that they have some distant relationship somewhere to Bobby and to any Sands from that area. (An aside to that is that Bobby's brother Sean, who still lives in the north of Ireland, is also a musician and performer).

Hey, I heard a great rendition of "Come on home to the county down" one Sunday on my local NPR outlet. They were broadcasting a celtic program, but I'm not exactly sure where it was based, and there were a couple of teenage kids singing it. It was awesome, and I was curious if anyone knew who they might be - I'd like to get the album.
Thanks.

Hallo,
ich habe an Tommy Sands selbst geschrieben und er hat mir den Text für das Lied "Dresden" gemailt.
Hier ist er:

DRESDEN

Lenin Square in Dresden is lonelier today,
For Hans and Ingrid's only son has just moved away.
He's gone to the west side, the land they call the free,
Searching for a better way to raise a family;
And Hans and Ingrid's silent. They can't believe their eyes,
As memories of other times come flooding to their minds.
They gave the party everything. That was their proudest boast,
And the leaders of the nation were the ones they trusted most.

CHORUS: Where have all the dreams gone?
Wo sind all die traume hin?

Hans still can feel the bruises of Hitler's cruel chains,
And how he laughed and cried that night the Red Army came;
And when the Allies bombed the town, all the women and the men,
They joined in with their own bare hands and they built it up again;
And that's how he met Ingrid, the fairest of them all,
A family's sole survivor from the night the bombs did fall;
And they swore they'd help to build a world where people could be friends:
No hatred and no poverty, just one family of man.

Where have all the dreams gone?
Wo sind all die traume hin?

The Berlin Wall has long since gone, the cheering's died away,
And Hans and Ingrid's only son has written home today.
"I'm worried for my job," he said. "I'm still so much in debt
With the children's education and the paying for the flat;
And last night I heard those screaming noises just outside the door.
Is this the racial hatred that you feared so much before?
Oh, if only we could build a world where people could be friends!"
And Hans and Ingrid close their eyes and they can see it all again.

Where have all the dreams gone?
Wo sind all die traume hin?

Subject: Lyr Add: THE MUSIC OF HEALING (Tommy Sands)
From: Stewie

The actual title of the song you are after is 'The Music of Healing'.

THE MUSIC OF HEALING
(Tommy Sands)

Don't beat the drum that frightens the children
Don't sing the songs about winning and losing
Sit down beside me the green fields are bleeding
Sing me the music of healing
Sing me a song of a lover returning
The darker the night, the nearer the morning
Bring me the news of a new day that's dawning
Sing me the music of healing

Chorus:
Ah, the heart's a wonder
Stronger than the guns of thunder
Even when we're torn asunder
Love will come again

Sometimes the truth's like a hare in the cornfield
You know that it's there but you can't put your arms round it
All we can hope for is follow its footprints
Sing me the music of healing
Who would have thought I could feel so contented
To learn I was wrong after all of my rambles
I've learned to be hard and I've learned how to tremble
Sing me the music of healing

Chorus

Somehow the cycle of vengeance keeps turning
Till each other's sorrows and songs we start learning
Peace is the prize for those who are daring
Sing me the music of healing
Time is your friend, it cures all your sorrows
But how can I wait till another tomorrow
One step today and a thousand will follow
Sing me the song of healing

Chorus (x2)

"Sometimes the truth's like a hare in the cornfield
You know that it's there but you can't put your arms round it
All we can hope for is follow its footprints"

I understand that Pete Seeger had something to do with this verse.
May have written it.

You are quite right, Frank. I checked the booklet again. Seeger duets with Sands on the recording. The attribution given in the song heading in the booklet is 'Tommy Sands - Elm Grove Music'. However, the note to the song reads in part: 'I wrote the second verse using some words from an old friend of mine, Pete Seeger, and some words he quoted from his father so I'm delighted that Pete and his grandson Tao were able to join me on this recording'.

It's called The Man With The Cap and was written by Colum Sands.

Some more info from Colum's songbook:

[2000:] A song from the pace and place of growing up. Ryan Road, near Mayobridge in County Down. I had two or three different men in mind when I wrote this song and maybe, for all I know, there were a few others dancing around in there at the back of my memory as well. What I am sure of though is that one of those men was an uncle of mine, a great man who, as far as I can remember, never travelled more than about ten miles from home in his life. He took a big black bicycle with him at all times. I often watched him walking along beside it and came to the conclusion that he took his bicycle with him as much for company as for transport. It was a fine strong bicycle with the standard black bag behind the seat, (the exact size for carrying a loaf of bread), a three speed gear system, dynamo lighting and a decoy bicycle pump. The decoy punp, which wouldn't have blown up a paper bag, was there merely to confuse and perplex any would-be thieves, the "good" pump travelled safely and snugly in the inside pocked of my uncle's great coat. Sunday was the day when his bicycle was most likely to leave Burren and come purring along the Ryan Road before turning down the lane to our house. Uncle Patrick never came in through the door without a generous bagful of minutely detailed and hugely entertaining accounts of who and what he had encountered on his travels that day. His powers of observation taught me from an early age that a five-mile journey by bicycle could be more exciting and colourful than a journey of thee hundred miles by car or five thousand miles by plane. At the end of some of those plane journeys, I have found myself singing this song in many different countries and, wherever I go, people often say to me afterwards, "I knew a man just like the one you were singing about in that song." So, it would seem that there are many "men with caps" out there, each one with his own story to tell. This song is for all of them and I hope that someday it may help someone, somewhere to take the time to stop and listen to one of those stories. (Colum Sands, Between the Earth and the Sky 12)

From: Jim Dixon

Copied from http://mysongbook.de/msb/songs/m/manwitht.html:

THE MAN WITH THE CAP
(Colum Sands)

They say he was the strangest man you'd ever want to meet.
He didn't like the towns at all and he kept to the quiet streets,
But mostly he was in the fields. he always wore a cap,
The same one for a Sunday as for briardin' up a gap.
And no one has a photo of this man.

No one seemed to know his plan.
He was lonely as a baby and as gentle as a child,
And it seems he often spoke of Oscar Wilde.

I mind we used to see him on the quiet summer nights
Standing by the roadside like a rabbit in the lights.
He'd never wave, just nod his head. he always wore a tie.
Some people said that he was odd. others said just shy.
And no one has a photo of this man

It seems he loved a girl one time but she must have gone away.
Perhaps he was too quiet or too different in his ways.
He never bothered after that, got careless with his looks,
Forgot to shave for seven years and took to reading books.
And no one has a photo of this man.

I saw him in the cornfield sowing with his hand.
He understood the weather and he understood the land.
He always wore what once had been a three-piece navy suit,
The same one for the sowing as for standing of the stooks.
And no one has a photo of this man.

They say he'd stand for hours gazing at the hills,
His bicycle beside him and both of them were still
As statues in the sunset. no one knew his mind,
But when he died, they said that he was kind.

We laid him down this morning. the rain was falling fast.
Those who thought they knew him were with him to the last.
The priest was sprinkling prayers and holy water in the rain,
And we said, "We'll hardly ever see the likes of him again."
And no one has a photo of this man.

No one has a photo of this man.

(as sung by Andy Irvine)

Was wondering if anyone has the chords to keg of brandy!! Here is the words if anyone is looking!!

Keg Of Brandy

[print]
(Robbie O'Connell)
I'm always drunk and I'm seldom sober
I'm constant rovin' from town to town
Ah, but I'm old now, my sporting's over
So, Molly, a store, won't you lay me down

Just lay my head on a keg of brandy
It is my fancy, I do declare
For while I'm drinkin', I'm always thinkin'
On lovely Molly from the County Clare

For the ripest apple is the soonest rotten
And the warmest love is the soonest cold
And a young man's fancy is soon forgotten
So beware young maids and don't make so bold

Just lay my head on a keg of brandy
It is my fancy, I do declare
For while I'm drinkin', I'm always thinkin'
On lovely Molly from the County Clare

It's youth and folly makes young men marry
And makes them tarry a long, long day
What can't be cured, love, must be endured love
So farewell darling, I'm going away

Just lay my head on a keg of brandy
It is my fancy, I do declare
For while I'm drinkin', I'm always thinkin'
On lovely Molly from the County Clare

ER, so why have you put this in a thread about Tommy Sands' songs????
Respectfully suggest you start a NEW thread with your song request in the title, then you might get more answers.
Sorry I don't know the song.

This one is lovely:

DOWN BY THE LAGAN SIDE
(Tommy Sands comp)

Well, I thought she was a vision that stopped me with her smile
Down by the river, we walked along in style
She says: you're welcome back again - and won't you stay awhile
Down by the Lagan side.

CHORUS: And when we dance, we'll dance together
When we cry, we'll hold each other
And when we love, we'll love forever
Down by the Lagan side.

I said: who owns that music, so full of joy and pain
That the pipers and the harpers and the Lambeg drummers play
She said: who owns the teardrops, falling in the rain
Down by the Lagan side.

And do you not remember, we once walked side by side
And the bells of Belfast city sang in harmony and pride
The past it has been taken, but the future's yours and mine
Down by the Lagan side.

Tattie Bogle you are correct that Ed and Willy should start a new thread - but to help them on their way I think the phrasing of their song is similar to Carrickfergus.

(I speak as a singer, not someone who reads music!)

It also reminds me of another well known (Scottish?) song that a friend sings, and if I could just get the first line into my head I'd remember what it is! -- a song of unrequited love, towards the end he plans to go away to Ingoe, to some lonely valley where womankind cannot be found -- and to put his head to a cask of brandy etc.

See this old age / rubbish memory?!

Could Willy and Ed have found a version or parody of it?

DON'T CALL ME EARLY IN THE MORNING
(Tommy Sands)

Don't call me early in the morning
Call me what you want to but leave me alone
Don't call me early in the morning
Just leave me till the cows are coming home

A man or a woman they need their relaxation
From rising always at the dawn
And the heart of the matter tomorrow is a Saturday
And I'll be lying on

Don't call me early in the morning
Call me what you want to but leave me alone
Don't call me early in the morning
Just leave me till the cows are coming home

Sad the lad that can't rest contented
He has it all but must have more
He fills himself with pills to retire with a million
But falls asleep at sixty-four

Don't call me early in the morning
Call me what you want to but leave me alone
Don't call me early in the morning
Just leave me till the cows are coming home

Fair is fair and I've done my share
My nerves are getting on my nerves
If you don't have a pillow of the white swan's feather
I'll do with a corner for my head

Don't call me early in the morning
Call me what you want to but leave me alone
Don't call me early in the morning
Just leave me till the cows are coming home

Just a gentle warning for tomorrow morning
No big noises near my room
Cars with no exhaust, Chickens with the hooping cough
And milkmen that whistle out of tune!

Don't call me early in the morning
Call me what you want to but leave me alone
Don't call me early in the morning
Just leave me till the cows are coming home
