Tech: New BBC Internet Facility (UK Based)

Subject: Tech: New BBC Internet Facility (UK Based)
From: Gareth

Following recent requests for gig information I thought that 'Catters everywhere should be aware that the BBC has recently launched a series of WEBSITES designed to give local information.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/southeast/listings/pages/folkworld.shtml

is the address of the South East Wales site or better still CLICK 'ERE

Now if gig and folk club organisors were to supply the iformation to the appropriate area site, this could be a facility which would be of benefit to 'Catters and others.

Just a thought !

Gareth

Gareth is there an easy way of finding where each regions listings are? BBC Shropshire listing I am aware of is http://www.bbc.co.uk/shropshire/music/folk/folk_diary_03.shtml. A rather different url (OK I expect the regional infomation to differ but not the other part if the BBC had a consistant system).

I would think that our "events system" is one of the more useful to anyone visiting an area. We just supply links to regionally maintained listings. Now I know of one for South East Wales, I will add it. Any member is free to add good sites they know of.

You beat me to it, Jon :-)

Gareth,

Whilst some BBC regions offer listings, most don't. I think that the excellent service Jon has at fokinfo.org is far more comprehensive and useful.

Agreed Gareth. The sort of information I was hoping you may be able to provide is if the BBC are in the process of providing a new service, is there a centralised method of finding folk information? I've checked the BBC Folk Message Board and can't find any info there.

If information is, as I suspect just organised by each region in it's own way, I would encourage people to add the links from thier area to folkinfo or alternativly post here if they don't want to join folkinfo and I or Ed can pick it up. That way, we continue to build a comprehensive set of liks people can check out just if they are visiting and area for a week and don't know local specifics.

As for regional listings themselves, I encourage people to use sites like the BBC site Gareth gave and help them by keeping them informed.

With regards to the Welsh areas, does anyone know the status of Mick Tem's listing these days? I can't even remember the address but before he had his stroke it used to be excellent.

I know Ed, I remember the discussion on whether to try to maintain event listings at folkinfo or point people to the listings maintained by others... It started with this thread...

I must hold my hand up and admit to doing a big "weed out" since posting links above. A few sites I need to check on still. My fault - sorry...

Hmmm ! Since my first post on thi thread I have done a tad of digging.

Research on the other BBC Wales regions shows no specific cattagory for folk, South West wales throws folk in with giggenerally, and the Holly Bush at Pontedawe features.

There is a BBC local listings page, town by town or sub region by sub region
Viz - http://www.bbc.co.uk/events/livemusic/classical/index.shtml?rid=&ndd=&cl=default or Click 'Ere

This lumps folk with classical etc. and a sketchy random sampleing shows no great mass of folk info.

I think 'Catters are betters served by Jon Freemans site above, or Mr Reds efforts but you never know, send the details to the BBC and we may create a demand.

Thanks Gareth, I'd agree with your findings with that BBC page.

We do link to Mr Reds - seems like a good site to me.

Biggest problem I have is the same as those maintainig the listings do. It can be quite difficult if not impossible to keep informed...

Just an update. I've since found the BBC do have a listing here which attempts to cover the whole of the UK. Loking at North Wales and Norfolk, I don't think much of it but am posting here for "completeness".

The entries on this site are from "Direct Roots" published by Mrs.Casey's Music. Entries in this publication were free and there was plenty of publicity about it. If clubs, etc, can't be bothered to promote themselves when it costs nothing they're probably not worth knowing about anyway.

Listings are only good as long as club organisers can be bothered to submit information. Richard Ashe's excellent East Midlands site, noted by Jon above, is no longer being maintained because so few people are sending him information.
You would think that a bit of free publicity would be welcome, but the people who give freely of their time to put listings together are for ever havinf to prod organisers to send them up to date information.

Yes, you're right bystander and Watson. I was being unfairly critical of the listing and know those who undertake these things are taking on a difficult task. I'm really surprised though that in N Wales for example that neither Conwy or Rhyl took advantage or that in Norfolk, the Norwich Folk Club isn't there.

Publicity? If punters actually started turning up the floor singers would have to learn more than three songs each and the organiser would have to stop subbing it.
