Tune Req: Step It Out, Mary

19 Jul 98 - 08:38 PM (#32930)
Subject: Stepping Out Mary
From: Mick Lowe

Anyone got the lyrics and chords (better still sheet music) to Stepping Out Mary or is it Step It Out Mary. I've a couple of versions, 1 by Dubliners, the other by Kelly's Heroes. But as anyone who knows it, it's quite fats and the words aren't that easy to catch.
Cheers
Mick

Ah Mick, perhaps it's due to the lateness of the hour and all, but if you put [step it out] in the box, upper right, you will get both 'Step it out Mary' and 'Step it out Nancy' and the latter has a tune with it. Here's the 'Mary' version from the database:

Danny Doyle also has a recording of Step It Out Mary. Robin & Linda Williams (Dixie Highway Sign) have recorded Step It Out Nancy where the lyrics are transformed into a western cowboy setting. The latter lyrics were written by Robin Williams and Jerome Clark

Step It Up Mary, is in the database as well as Step It Up Nancy, by Robin Williamson, which is a very nice take off of Mary. Barry

There is a version on Boiled in Lead's "From the Ladle to the Grave" CD also. Can't recall offhand if it's the traditional lyrics or not. Sort of a turbocharged acid celtic band, if you haven't heard them.

Hi,

Anyone got the tune? I remember the tune for the chorus. Is the tune for the verse the same?... it scans pretty well.

And while I'm here I'm going to whinge, it's been raining here for ages and I'm stuck in the house with 2 very bored toddlers............AAAAAAAHHHHH!!! I need a sanity break!!

alison,

The verse and the chorus have different tunes. If you go to the Digital Tradition in the upper right hand corner and type in [Step It Out Nancy], you will get the words. You will also find a new addition to the Mudcat. There are links to several CD sales organizations. I checked CDNow, but they did not have any samples of the song available. You might search the others like Amazon.com. I am not familiar with them, but they may have samples.

Besides, just trying it should drive you crazy in a different direction than the kids drive you.

Hi Alison, The rain up here (100 miles north, in Oz) is driving me crazy too - but I don't have any kids to add to the craziness.

Is this the same song as the one I have heard called Steppin' Out Mary?

As I recall, tune for the verse repeats the same tune three times and then has the same last line as chorus, and chorus goes up to the tonic, whereas verse just peaks at the 5th note of the scale.
'Course, there are a number of variants to the tune, and the one I know ends minor.
Let me reccommend to you some Blue Collar Enlightenment: $1.79 for a box of industrial strength earplugs and $10 for a fifth of rum. It's a solution I came across when I was trying to find a way to get enlightened enough to survive my m-in-law's two week visits.

The earplugs keep you from hearing what she's saying, and the rum keeps you from caring. Hey, pick a good one.

She's one of those "Who left this here where I could knock it over and break it?" types, the kind that make situation comedies so funny and real life so miserable.

Hey all,

Does anyone have an MP3 file for the Irish song "Step it out Mary?" Have the lyrics & chords, just need the tune. Would love to learn it, but I barely remember it. The Beggarmen (the duo Seamus Kennedy used to be part of) I seem to remember, did a cool version of it in the seventies....but ANY version would do at this point!

Nothing worse than ALMOST remembering a songaaaAAArrrrgh

Thanks, y'all. :) I just got a SLEW of your MP3's....about 5 versions, from Boiled in Lead to Danny Doyle. That should do the trick.

Now if I can get my hands on the lyrics to "Molly na gCuach Ni Chullanain"---as sung by the Black Family---I'll go to bed happy. (My Irish is OK....but I swear this song must be in Scots, cause I can barely follow a word of it!)

Slan go foill and thanks again! you guys rock.

Hi all Mudcatters,

I am trying to find the sheet music to "Step it out Mary". I have the lyrics and chords etc, but the song is not included in any of my songbooks. In fact I would love to find a good sheet music website for Irish folk songs in general. Would really appreciate any help on this. Thanks in advance JB

Sheet music isn't, Barry.

Step it out Nancy is at JC's tune finder, select GIF for the dots, MIDI to listen- tune's a bit different from the one I know for S-I-O Mary, but perhaps you can modify it once you've got the basics?

(JC's is more for dance tunes than song tunes, but there is some overlap.)

The dt doesn't supply a tune for Step It Out Mary (but does for Step It Out Nancy).

It won't help this time round but if you ever want sheet music and don't have software to cope with MIDI (I'd advise getting some BTW), the other site that hosts a version of the dt here is probably the best bet.

Sheet music for "Step it out Mary" is on the booklet that comes with Midnight Court`s CD "ear to the ground", which can be ordered from magnetic-music.com (Sorry, I haven`t learned to do blue clickys yet); in fact theres sheet music for all the songs/tunes on the album.
It is a great album from a really good band.

Here is an abc for the tune as I know it. It's similar to the "Nancy" one but not quite the same.

I don't know how long it will last there but I have posted this abc to our test song here. You can get the tune in MIDI, png graphic and pdf formats from there (at least until it gets replaced with some other abc).

I should have add you can also transpose the song and get sheet music from following that link to suit your chords. The song is in Am above (though I've wrongly marked it as the relative major, C in the abc). I'm pretty sure I do the song in Em - this should do that.

The song "Step it out, Mary" also seems to be known as "Step it out, Nancy."

Is this it? (copy and paste the URL below into your URL box)

If not, is it close enough so you can figure out any differences?
