Need Marching Music

I need a list of song titles for marching music.

Here's the deal...my 85-year-old uncle and his wife live in a retirement community with a large recreation hall. For exercise they have a drill team that marches in precision drill routines. I saw them several years ago, a little 90-year-old lady has a whistle to give commands on when to do the various turns, etc. It really is quite a work-out.

I'm thinking Susa marches. Or any march that Americans in that age range would be familiar with. Any suggestions?

Hi Mary --

My dad was an Army band sergeant in World War I. His band was with Pershing in Paris at the end of the war.

Since today is the 117th anniversary of my dad's birth, I offer one of his favorites for your list:

General Pershing March

Here is a link to a great site for WWI music. You can listen to samples. Pershing's march is in the 10th grouping.

World War I music

We had scads of these old 78s. Daddy would get a bit tipsy, no, actually, he'd get soused, put records on our old Victrola and direct the band. Happy Birthday, T.P.

Enjoy the site.

Thanks guys. I gave him instructions on how to search at CDnow (since I couldn't link to their page.) I found some great stuff there that he can listen to. I had forgotten about Colonel Bogey March, etc.

Mary, I love the General Pershing March and all the sounds on the link you gave. I can just imagine your dad directing that one. It has lots of flourishes for the baton to go wild!

Polkas like Beer Barrell and Under the Double Eagle would work too.

LOL. I just noticed that the last song on that page is "My Buddy." I just made a Happy Birthday web page for my uncle with that music in the background and a picture of my little Yorkie, Skippy, standing outdoors amidst the buttercups looking sad. My uncle loves that page. He professes to not like dogs, but Skippy took up with him and liked to sit in his lap.

Don't forget the bagpipe- there's lots of rousing pipe and drum music! My dad listened to it on his nordic track machine until he wore away the cartilege in his shoulders! He also loved "skiing" to Polish polkas- just the right beat and tempo!

I have a Sousa's Band CD (Under The Double Eagle - The Marches of John Philip Sousa, Pearl GEMM CD 9249). The sound isn't good because the marches were recorded between 1918 and 1930, but it includes historical recordings; some were conducted by Sousa himself.

These are great. I just may make a tape for him. He called me Sunday after I sent him the WWI link and a list of Sousa marches.

I'd like to incorporate Arkansas Traveler and The Yellow Rose of Texas too. We've always had a running joke since he was born in Arkansas and I was born in Texas. It would be funny to juxtapose different tempos, etc. I can just see the guys trying to keep time!

"The Ants Go Marching Two by Two"

...which is not REALLY the same as "Johnny..." because you're allowed to swing it and be silly with it. My daughters and I used to walk to school when they were pretty small (with short legs) and this was one that we sang to get up the big hill in NO time!

Sounds like great fun.

There are many many CD's out there of Sousa music, bands love to perform his marches. But also check out classic marches by Karl King, Henry Fillmore, Edwin Franko Goldman. Also check out circus music CD's. Many circus marches would be familiar to senior citizens.

Ooooooh, this just gets better and better. I wasn't familiar with the name Karl King, so I searched on Google and found this link. http://www2.acc.af.mil/music/march/.

I have a lousy sound card, but I'm wondering if I could make a few tapes. My uncle started taping radio programs back in the 80's so he may be able to tape something off the Net too.

He's enjoying the links I've sent. From my perspective though, there is just too much music to choose from!

I keep hearing "Colonel Bogey March" followed by "Tbe Ants Go Marching" followed by some drums and bugles...then bagpipes!

Any recording conducted by Frederick Fennell is worth checking out too. and/or the Eastman Wind Ensemble...

Also, two really cool marches from the hispanic world that you're bound to recognize: Zacatecas March (Mexico) and Amparita Roca (Spain)

I love that Big Band sound! Also, my uncle lives near the Mexican border and the Zacatecas March sounds like the flavor of the area.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm learning some new resources.

I saw lots of circus/caliope music when looking for these. And I recognize them. Does this make me a senior citizen? ;-)

And don't forget the theme to Monty Python's Flying Circus. It is also a Sousa march.
