18 May 03 - 04:21 PM (#955007) Subject: Need Marching Music From: Mary in Kentucky I need a list of song titles for marching music. Here's the deal...my 85-year-old uncle and his wife live in a retirement community with a large recreation hall. For exercise they have a drill team that marches in precision drill routines. I saw them several years ago, a little 90-year-old lady has a whistle to give commands on when to do the various turns, etc. It really is quite a work-out. I'm thinking Susa marches. Or any march that Americans in that age range would be familiar with. Any suggestions? |

Since today is the 117th anniversary of my dad's birth, I offer one of his favorites for your list: General Pershing March Here is a link to a great site for WWI music. You can listen to samples. Pershing's march is in the 10th grouping. World War I music We had scads of these old 78s. I found some great stuff there that he can listen to. I had forgotten about Colonel Bogey March, etc. Mary, I love the General Pershing March and all the sounds on the link you gave. I can just imagine your dad directing that one. It has lots of flourishes for the baton to go wild! |

I just made a Happy Birthday web page for my uncle with that music in the background and a picture of my little Yorkie, Skippy, standing outdoors amidst the buttercups looking sad. My uncle loves that page. He professes to not like dogs, but Skippy took up with him and liked to sit in his lap. |

The sound isn't good because the marches were recorded between 1918 and 1930, but it includes historical recordings; some were conducted by Sousa himself. ~Masato |

He called me Sunday after I sent him the WWI link and a list of Sousa marches. I'd like to incorporate Arkansas Traveler and The Yellow Rose of Texas too. We've always had a running joke since he was born in Arkansas and I was born in Texas. It would be funny to juxtapose different tempos, etc. I can just see the guys trying to keep time! |

My daughters and I used to walk to school when they were pretty small (with short legs) and this was one that we sang to get up the big hill in NO time! Sounds like great fun. Dani |

But also check out classic marches by Karl King, Henry Fillmore, Edwin Franko Goldman. Also check out circus music CD's. Many circus marches would be familiar to senior citizens. |

I wasn't familiar with the name Karl King, so I searched on Google and found this link. http://www2.acc.af.mil/music/march/. I have a lousy sound card, but I'm wondering if I could make a few tapes. My uncle started taping radio programs back in the 80's so he may be able to tape something off the Net too. He's enjoying the links I've sent. From my perspective though, there is just too much music to choose from! I keep hearing "Colonel Bogey March" followed by "Tbe Ants Go Marching" followed by some drums and bugles...then bagpipes! |
