A SONG IN PRAISE OF CHALK
(W. Pittis - D'Urfey 1719)

While the Citizens prate
Over Ale of the State,
And talk of Bank-Bills and Exchequer,
Let us, who drink Wine,
Now summon the Nine,
In the Praise of what pays for our Liquor:

Let other Folks sing,
Of a Lord, or a King
Or some Quality Fopling Petition
Till Footman comes down,
With thanks, or a Crown,
And smiles at the Mortal's condition.

We the Lads at the Rose,
A Patron have chose,
Who's as void as the best is of Thinking,
And without Dedication,
Will assist in his Station,
and maintain us in Eating and Drinking.

Boys out with your Chalk,
and let the Glass walk,
'Tis a crying Sin not to be grateful,
While there's Pit(?)of this Coin,
we will all swim in Wine,
and reel home to our Beds with our Pate full.

Tho' Relation or Friend
will not Give us or Lend,
Wherewithal for to down with the Ready,
Yet our good Landlord Bliss,,
Makes acceptance of this,
and this Boys must Cloath ye, and Feed ye

With the White then in hand,
The Red let's command,
And keep drinking and scoring brisk Claret
Till the Bar runs on Wheels,
And Will takes to his Heels,
and sculks home form the Watch, to his Garret.

Where'd you find this one, MMario?
I was guessing Pills to Purge Melancholy, but couldn't find evidence to prove it.

Is D'Urfey Thoman D'Urfey, or Thomas Durfey, known for "Wit and Mirth, or Pills to Purge Melancholy?"
"Blow the Candle(s) Out," a song T. Durfey printed, is discussed in thread 50215: Blow the Candle Out

Any information on C. W. Pittis? Where did you get the lyrics and music?

Have you read Terry Pratchetts latest? The Wee Free Men? Talks a lot about chalk...

READ IT TO SEE!

Cheers

This song is in Wit and Mirth: or Pills to Purge Melancholy, edited by Thomas D'Urfey, in 6 vols., vol. IV (New York: Folklore Library Publishers, 1959, pp. 183-184) [facsimile reproduction of the 1876 reprint of the original edition of 1719-1720].

This is William Pittis' only song indexed in English Song-Books 1651-1702, by Cyrus Lawrence Day and Eleanore Boswell Murrie (Printed for the Bibliographical Society at the University Press, Oxford, 1940 (for 1937), no. 3866).

The Bodleian has a further piece by Pittis:  Out with 'em while you are about it, but whether it was ever a song is moot, I suppose. He seems mostly to have written verse.

On a point of detail, you might consider using the abc "B" ("book") header rather than "N" for D'Urfey's details, and name the book itself. At the moment there's a risk that people looking at this thread later on will think you meant that D'Urfey was co-writer rather than anthologist in this case.
