This is a folk song that goes "donna Donna Donna Do - nna" I had it years ago by DONOVAN it think. I heard this beautiful Irish lady singing it in a pub in Lewisham recently. Has anybody got the words & chords?

I shouldn't have tried to tidy the chords & words before I posted them! Apart from the 1st chord of each line they all need moving to the right a bit - sorry.

Darn - I was thinking the requested song wat the one that goes "Donna, dee-dee Donna." I found this page (click) with three Donna songs, but not the one  I  wanted.

But now that I know that the requested song is "dona, dona," I tried to fix Marion's chord spacing with <pre> preformat </pre> tags. Did I do it right, Marion?

Forgive me if I posted this already; I can't find it, so am asking again
in the event that I never posted it at all....

I see from the threads on Dona Dona that it was written by two fellows originally in Yiddish, and translated by some fellow into English. Is the copyright private, or can we call it traditional? --Sidney

Personally, I believe the copyright still resides with the original writers. No matter who, and how many times it gets translated, the authors who wrote it originally should be respected.

Thanks for the copyright info--I like to give credit and also to talk about where songs came from, and Dona is very interesting. I've gone back in the thread and gotten the original author and composer. And I see that the English translation copyright is held by Mills Music for Kevess and Schwartz.

The reason I was interested in the first place is because of ASCAP. ASCAP collects royalties on a percentage of playage basis, I think, and ocassionally they come around to venues and insist on a yearly dues, and/or insist on the venue using their canned music. We have several small venues in my town (Read that, eensie teensie) and ASCAP came to one that was hosting local musicians who were coming in casually to share music, and intimidated the owner enough that she simply shut down the venue to musicians, which rather seems to defeat the purpose. But the point was taken, and now I myself want to focus on traditional music and original music. But gosh, there are some real beauties out there and it seems a shame to penalize live music, especially unpaid live musicians, for playing beautiful songs to people who are willing to leave their CD players and sit with other live people. IMHO.   Sidney

I wonder if it might be possible for you to contact Mills Music for permission to play Donna Donna, or find out if ASCAP holds the publication rights. (Not everything is published through ASCAP.) Does anyone know what musicians can do about singing widely-known songs at small venues that don't pay ASCAP dues? This really goes against what most songwriters are after - to have their songs live.
