song ideas please

Would give eye teeth for names of songs that i could sing at pubs. I sing unaccompanied tenor - so have to be carefully choosing songs with a bit of pace and beauty - emotional ones rather than ballads.
Would be appreciative of suggestions to add to repertoire currently including songs like: Nancy Spain, Ringsend Rose, Sonny's dream, Fiddler's Green, Miner's Lament and of course Danny Boy.

I am not sure how digital tradition works - so please post ideas or email to me at alinacre@hotmail.com

cheers
Andrew

Try listening to some of the stuff that Roy Bailey, Jez Lowe, John Tams, Martyn Windham Reid and other headline acts do. I know a lot of them are accompanied, but quite a lot work a capela too.

Some voices suit different sorts of songs so try them out and see which you are happiest with: for instance, I can't imagine Martyn W-R doing political stuff, his voice was just made for laments and stories, whereas Roy Bailey can do the soft stuff and has a harder edge for the political songs he does.

If you like the song, you will sing it better. There are 9000 odd songs in the DT above, most with music links to them. There has to be one or two there that you like!

Good luck!

There's always Fields of Athenry, Forty-Five Years, and tons of others. There are a couple of "authorized" lyrics for the fiddle tune, Ashokan Farewell. Working Man by Rita MacNeil is pretty good. Cape Breton Lullaby and Song For the Mira and Heading For Halifax are also excellent. Might want to look at The Water is Wide and Wild Mountain Thyme, too.

Lyrics for all of the above are in the DT or the Mudcat Forum.

Loch Tay Boat Song is a masterpiece for male voice. If it's a Irish venue, have you tried Four Green Fields yet?

Andrew, the digital tradition is a database
containing many (9000?) songs . It is searchable.
If you know the title or one word in the title,
you can enter it and find all songs with that
word in the title.
Either leave the DT box with a check mark,
or enter the first letter of the title to search.
some have sound samples in midi file format.'
good luck.

Be warned - there are places where you will be lynched for singing 'the Fields of Athenry' - although mostly not in Ireland.... It has rapidly taken over from 'The Wild Rover' as the most hated 'folk' song in Britain, if not the English speaking world!
