Anyone know a song with this line, heard at Cropready 1992, possibly written by Richard Thompson? Hwyl, Bron.

Try Hugh and Tony Williams the Welsh duo. They certainly perform and have recorded a song with this title, but I believe it was also written by one of them. Heres hoping BJ

G'day MC Fat and nutty,

I guess this is 'thread drift', but the current thread on I'll be all Smiles Tonight (apart from crediting this fine old song to the Carter Family rip-off) reminded me that Allan Marshall, whose autobiography gave the title and inspiration for the song I Can Jump Puddles, wrote some articles for Australian folk magazines.

One that I enjoyed greatly was in (the first issue of ...?) the Victorian Folk Music Club's magazine Tradition, back in the early 1960s. The title was Bring Back the Sobs of Yesteryear! and it was about all those wonderfully 'weepie' old songs that were so popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I'm sure that "I'll be all Smiles Tonight" gets a guernsey in that article.

Regards,

Bob Bolton

For the record, here's the song Nutty linked to.

I CAN JUMP PUDDLES
by Hugh and Tony Williams

Every day she moves me
Steadily improves me
Step by step she helps this body
Do the things it could
She never sees me labelled
Young and disabled
Sometimes she holds me in her arms
Like any mother would
And we don't need your tears
We don't need to hear you cry
I can't run like other children
But we have some laughs when i try
Book, chapter and pages
Triumph comes in stages
Step by precious step i count
The things that I can do
Now I can jump puddles, can you?

Out the door and through the hall
Outside to the garden wall
On a good day I can make them all
Watch me as I do
Across the floor and in a chair
One step, two step, up the stair
Climbing mountains everywhere
'Cos I can do that too
Through the window I see people
Running one by one
Racing from the showers
But then I smile when they come
Everywhere there are places
With empty hearts and faces
Maybe they don't have the joy
Of things that I can do
Now I can jump puddles, can you?

In streets and parks and places
There are staring eyes and faces
I know that she sees them
But together we don't care
Every road and avenue
There's something in it, something new
We can go exploring through
A new world every day
'Cos I can ride a spaceship
Or engine on the line
I can be a cowboy fighting indians any time
And when we've sailed the big lagoon
Fought the rains of the big monsoon
In the desserted streets of the afternoon
Watch what I can do
'Cos I can jump puddles, can you?

G'day all, particularly Bob Bolton

I live in Birregurra in South Western Victoria, not far from Noorat, the town where Alan Marshall was born and grew up. Alan was inspirational to the people he grew up amongst due to his determination not to let his disability immobilse him to the point where he rode his pony everywhere around the district.

Just thought I'd put this in for a bit of background

Cheers

The original may be heard on Huw and Tony's excellent "Junction 26" and "Live" cds. One of those songs of theirs you can't listen too without the hair on the back of your neck rising.

G'day Bates from Birregurra,

Thanks for that picture. I have heard many people speak of how inspiring Allan Marshall was - a man who rose above his own problems ... and one who worked hard to help others.

Regards,

Bob Bolton

Watch the spelling error in those lyrics. :-)

desserted = deserted

It's also the name of a book by Alan Marshall, published in 1955.

I have heard many people speak of how inspiring Allan Marshall was - a man who rose above his own problems ... and one who worked hard to help others.

Alan was also a great story teller who played mouth organ and played around with a 20 key Lachenal Anglo I left in his care for the last few years of his life. There's a story in that, as well.

Cheers, Rowan
