27 May 03 - 08:19 PM (#960119) Subject: Obit: Peter Collier, another shantyman From: Little Robyn A couple of weeks back we were lamenting the loss of Frank Winter, one of the singers in The Maritime Crew in Auckland, New Zealand. The Crew sang at Frank's funeral and then a few days later Peter went on holiday to Fiji. The news has come through that Peter died there, probably from a heart attack. According to Bob Large, one of the remaining Crew: The Maritime Crew is in shock - we had just begun to absorb the loss of Frank when the news of Pete's death came through. Everybody loved Pete - what else can I say? Pete's song "The Longliner's Lament" was also recorded by Brouhaha. Lew Black sings Pete's song on the Maritime Crew recording, "Under the Southern Cross". I'd like to think that Pete and Frank are playing whistle and bones on Fiddler's Green right now. There is a lovely photo on www.maritimecrew.co.nz Sorry, I haven't figured out the "blicky" yet. I'm trying to imagine how it would feel to have the same thing happen to our favourite shanty singing group here - too horrible to contemplate. My heart goes out to them and all you who knew them. 28 May 03 - 11:24 PM (#960970) Subject: RE: Obit: Peter Collier, another shantyman From: GavNCara Pete's death is a sad loss, even without the loss of Frank two weeks earlier. Peter Collier isn't in the photo on the home page, as he had taken leave from the group for a while to help balance his busy life, and wasn't involved in the publicity photos, which that is one of. One of his own songs was sung on that album. However, he was always there as a support, and fill in, and was still and always a member of the Crew. I'm updating the website, and hopefully soon there will be a better photo of Peter. You'll know him by his dark curly hair! He was 52. The photo on the home page, L to R is Gavin, John, Bob, Rude, Lew. Arohanui Cara The Maritime Crew (It might be worth waiting a day or two to look, as it's a work in progress!) |

I've known Gavin, Frank, Rudy and Lew for a sum total of about 100 years but not the others so I'm sorry if I got it wrong, namewise. Special thoughts to you all at this afternoon's farewell. Sorry we can't get there in person. Robyn |
