5/28: The patron of skiers, St Bernard of Menthon or of Montjoux or of Aosta: Feast Day (died c.5/28/1008; born c.923)

St. Bernard dogs bear his name. In the 11th century he founded a hospice that has sheltered thousands caught in Alpine snows.

George Pickow (photographer extraordinary & especially of Folk Stars) did a wonderful 1957 National Geographic shoot & article about the St. Bernard dogs of the Alps.

Having heard from a priest the story one classic dog rescue:
"Are you sure this really happened?" I persisted.

"The story has been told too often by too many good men to be false," my friend replied. "Details of rescues were rarely written down here, so we have no complete record of the dogs' work. But we all believe that these things are true."

Great! "The story has been told too often by too many good men to be false." I don't think it's ever been better expressed.

To me, thet's the very definition of "Truth."

The URL with the full text and pictures seems to move around a lot but is now Clicky

That's appropriate, I repotted my St Bernard's lily last weekend.

Most people know it as the humble spider plant.

Time for a rounded approach. In the Albigensian Crusade, Abbot Bernard, forbidden by cannon law to kill with a sword, gleefully took up a mace to help kill the people of Albi. Their biggest crime was thaqt they were essentially better Christians than he was. They were also Manichaean heretics, but what caused the trouble was gaining converts from the mainstream church.
