Now that really is pathetic.

"Well, we couldn't find Bin Laden, but we have really cracked down on the train spotters!"

I was thinking that anyone really wanting to know about train movements, with a view to doing something unpleasant, would just buy a timetable - but then that isn't true these days.

But Morris Men have beards generally, and that is a clear indication of terrorist inclinations. (Not the Female Morris Men, I grant you.)

What about the bird watchers?

Kevin - A little intelligent use of the internet will give you train, loco, destination, and load ! - A bit of back plotting will gve you the paths and times of the "Military Ghost Trains"

BTW officially Falmouth Docks was the last part of Britain to use steam for industrial shunting (USA = Switching) But and this is a complete conspiracy Those nasty Nuclear scientists at Sellafield still use a steam shunting engine to move the "Horror" spent nuclear wastee around. Well think about it, 2 to 3 hours shunting every two week or so - Perfect utilisation.

Gareth - complete with Anorak !!!!!

It'd tell you where and when the trains are supposed to be, but that is not at all the same thing.

I doubt very much indeed if this has anything to do with anti-terrorism - that's just a convenient excuse for anything these days. It's to do with image - note that quote in Gareth's BBC link: "Provided it's not in the rush hour, and we haven't got film crews there that we have got to look after, it should be all right."

Ahhh!, Kevin point missed. If the Terrorists want to do a nasty all they need is the paths and passing times !

Tho I'd agree that Management would like to exterminate us Anoraks.

Gareth.

Less than 500 yards from where I sit the Union Pacific has a massive train yard. Should I want to do something Nasty, I could get whatever info I wanted simply by using a pair of binoculars. So could anyone, nearly anywhere.

Suppose I was able to hijack a train carrying nuclear waste. If I do something with it here, I make no political statement; if I try to take it somewhere else the railroad shunts me onto a track to nowhere. Most importantly, the authorities know where I am and they are either waiting or there very, very soon. If I crash the train, the radioactive waste pollutes a small section of fairly empty land (and yes, such DOES exist in the eastern US and even in Britain).

The railroad is being silly.

In a similar line, we had over here yesterday the headline "Al Qaeda threatens Serengeti". I got curious what them terrorists plan to do to the animals in the Serengeti wildlife park (and why? are African wild animals declared unclean in the Koran?) and started to read.

It's easy once it is explained to you: The warnings from unnamed intelligence agencies have made, for instance, the British Airways, to cancel flights to Kenia. No flights, no tourists. No tourists, no safaris. No safaris, no money. No money, no incentive to keep up the wildlife parks. No money for the park rangers then all the wild humans outside of the park go into and kill the animals for food.

Even the WWF has issued a press statement.

If you really look at it you must admit that the war against terrorism is also a fight for the preservation of the last wild animals in Africa. Who dares to say the Bush government is blind for environmental issues?

Of corse the REAL THREAT to World Security is the bunch of evil people who go a step further than standing on the platform LOOKING at the trains. YES - I mean them dodgy characters who actually OPEN THE DOOR and CLIMB INTO THE CARRIAGE! I am surprised that world governments are not taking more positive action to prevent them.
They could take all sorts of measures - Cancel trains at random. Send them to a different destination to the one they expect to go. Print inaccurate or misleading information about what time a train will be found at a station. Put increadibly unhelpful staff on the station platforms, or even better None at all.
Oh - Hang-on - That is what they already do!
Quack!

Of course the Railway companies want to get rid of train-spotters, they're the irresponsible types who do things like note the REAL times trains arrive or pass (or don't) and can therefore dispute the accuracy of the distorted claims of efficiency (dammit, the railways already count +/- 9 mins 59 secs as "on time").
Train spotters with cameras record the trains which are hideously overcrowded because the one before was cancelled and this train was 4 cars instead of 8 - commuters don't usually carry cameras.
Train spotters (with cameras) can record the filth state some commuter trains are in and just how dirty some stations are.

Yes, TRAIN SPOTTERS ARE TERRORISTS - they terrorise the spin doctors and RC 'suits' who want us to believe that everything in the garden is lovely.
