Hello All!

Having got most of the other lyrics for the " Seven steps to mercy " cd, I was wondering if anyone knew of the gaelic lyrics to seacht? It is a nice song and would be good to have the lyrics, but i find it difficult to hear on the album.

Slan agaibh,

Ruairi

you should have asked me a couple of weeks ago; I was talking with Iarla at a singing workshop in Belfast. Eimear at the Cultúrlann in Belfast would know how to contact him, if you want to pass your enquiry on to her.

I found this information at http://fringedigital.com/brook/disc/seven.shtml
(Actually, my browser does weird things when I try to view that page, so I got it from Google's cache at http://216.239.33.100/search?q=cache:urjM3mS6XWQJ:fringedigital.com/brook/disc/seven.shtml+%22Seven+steps+to+mercy%22&hl=en&ie=UTF-8)

ALBUM: The Seven Steps to Mercy (Seacht gCoisceim na Trocaire), Iarla Ó Lionáird, Real World Records, 1997.

SONG: Seacht (Seven); lyrics Iarla Ó Lionáird; music traditional, arr. Iarla Ó Lionáird, Michael Brook, and Ingmar King.

Phillipa,

Can you tell me what the workshop was about and how often they are. I got iarla's email off eimear, thanks for that. Do you live in ireland and practice sean nos singing? Im gonna be back in dublin from september and would be glad of any local information on sean nos singing (ie classes, or etc...).

Go raibh maith agat.

Rory

Hello all,

I realise this thread is quite old, but I was wondering if anyone *does* have the lyrics to "Seacht" - I too would like them...

Thanks,
Tommy

You could post a message on the Afrocelts.com own site. He would be sure to get it there. Also Simon Emmerson has just written an article on his folk beginnings that may be of interest to some here.

Hi guest, afrocelts.com isn't working at the moment, they're updating the site and it seems to be taking much longer than they hoped to get it back up again. Their new remix album is out in May and we've been told the new site will be up then. We've also been promised translations of the lyrics, fingers crossed.

In the meantime,
http://www.afrocelts.org/, is working and thats the place where you'll find Simons article. If you post your question in the forum, there's a chance he may answer.

BTW Iarla singing 'Aililiu Na Gamhna' from the 'Seven Steps to Mercy' has been a feature of the last few Afrocelts shows. Achingly beautiful.

so is someone going to post lyrics here?

Ruairi, I didn't see your message last year. I suppose now you are back in Ireland and finding things out for yourself. The Belfast weekend is only once a year, this year will be 7-9 May. An Cultúrlann also has a Sunday singing circle once or twice a month. Sean-nós cois Life is held in Dublin annually; the 2004 event was last weekend. Not too far from Dublin is An Béal Binn in Bray, Co. Wicklow, with singing classes 8-9 pm, singing session afterwards, Thursday nights at the sailing club opposite the Harbour Bar.
(p-mail "Felipa" for phone no and e-mail; I've never been to an Béal Binn, but I have the info)

Hello, I was wondering if anyone managed to find the lyrics to Seacht, from Seven Steps to Mercy? Or if they might have a link to suggest?
I realise this is an old thread, but I hope that someone might be able to help me out!
Go raibh míle maith agaibh agus slán anois,
Hilary.

So you got the Iarla O'Loinaird's "Seacht" lyrics? Would you provide it to me, please?

I can't transcribe or understand it, but you can hear SEACHT on YouTube. I believe the audio is taken from Iarla Ó Lionáird's album "The Seven Steps to Mercy" (1997).

I found the following in a YouTube post.

Tá mo mhuintir scartha ón baile
Is mo shinsear sínt ós mo chomhair
Ach níl stad le síneadh na mblianta ós ar gcomhair
Ná fáth raoar trácht ar mo stor

Nuair a dfhágasa an tí seo
Cois chladaigh chun seol
Seacht scilling gheal i do phóca bhí chun baint
Ar ár slí chun an dtalamh nua

Nuair a dfhágasa an tí geal maidin
Is tuath fághtha a mbeidh
Ar ár ghainimh bhán ar an trá bhíodar seasamh
Gach neach im shaol
Le neart comhacht an ghátair
Scaradh sinn mar sclábhaí i bhfád amach
I lár an cheoigh
Mar níl stad le síneadh na mblianta ós ár gcomhair
Ná fáth raoar ar mo bhrón
