04 Mar 03 - 05:59 PM (#903532) Subject: RE: LYR ADD: 'Broken Hearted Lover'- Carter From: Genie Oooh, thanks, Q! Great site to know about. Just wondering, though, about "Are You Lonesome Tonight." The lyrics I know for the verse #1 are: "Are you lonesome tonight, do you miss me tonight? Are you sorry we drifted apart? Does your memory stray to a bright summer day..." and for the bridge, they are: "Do the chairs in your parlor seem empty and bare? Do you gaze at your doorstep and picture me there? ..." Did the Carters sing different lyrics than the pop singers of the 20s/30s/40s did and Elvis did later? Or are their errors in the lyrics on the Carter songs website you linked to? (I know that Cowpie's lyrics, for instance, are sometimes spot on and sometimes way off, depending on who submitted them.) Genie |

Does your memories [sic] cling to that bright summer day When I kissed you and called you sweetheart? Like the rose on the vine, I am clinging to you As I did when we drifted apart. I am wishing you back to that little shack Where I kissed you and called you sweetheart. Does the chair in your parlor seem empty and bare? Do you miss me and wish I was there? Is your heart filled with pain? Shall I come back again? Tell me, darling, are you lonesome tonight? CHORUS I have counted the days; I've counted the nights. I've counted the months and the years. I have counted on you since we drifted apart. Tell me, darling, are you lonesome tonight? CHORUS I found these on the wonderful Carter Family Website.. there are 47 pages of Carter lyrics. Just type it in google and it comes up. from Mary |

I still don't know if the site has lyric errors or if Elvis and the other pop singers who recorded the song changed them. Genie |
05 Mar 03 - 03:59 PM (#904185) Subject: RE: LYR ADD: 'Broken Hearted Lover'- Carter From: GUEST,Q Hard to track down the "exact" lyrics sung unless you have taken the text from the recordings. I'm sure someone here has the re-issue cds. The site I linked to has more accurate lyrics and more of them than the other site, but I don't have enough of the recordings to verify them. Try checking both of them: 1. Carter texts Labeled "complete" but it isn't. This is the one I linked to before. 2. Carter family A complete listing of the 12 cds in "In the Shadow of Clinch Mountain" is here: Clinch Mountain It has "all" of the commercially recorded Carter Family. |
05 Mar 03 - 05:41 PM (#904267) Subject: RE: LYR ADD: 'Broken Hearted Lover'- Carter From: Stewie The second site that Q linked has the accurate transcription, complete with the ungrammatical third line of the chorus - 'Does your memories ...' The other site - I'll have a go at linking it: CLICK - corrected the grammatical error and also substituted 'we' for 'we've' in the final stanza. Checked from reissue on 'The Decca Sessions Volume One' Catfish KATCD 188. --Stewie. |
