I know two:
"Let the Lower Lights Be Burning..."
and
"Let the Light from Your Lighthouse Shine on Me..."
The first one is in DT; just put lighthouse in the box upper right. If it's the second one you want, let me know and I'll type in the words.
Blessings,
Barbara

Thanks Barbara.
I have forwarded the ones in DT and would appreciate the ones from you.
At this particular moment, I just can't recall the tune or lyrics or even the correct title...
But am sure my friend will recogize the correct ones.

I may be slow, but eventually I get there. Here's the other lighthouse song.
Blessings,
Barbara

YOUR LIGHT FROM THE LIGHTHOUSE
from the singing of Jean Redpath and Lisa Neustadt
on Angels Hovering ‘Round

CHORUS: Let it shine on, let it shine on,
Let your light from the lighthouse shine on me,
Let it shine on, let it shine on,
Let your light from the lighthouse shine on me,

My Lord he done just what he said
Let your light from the lighthouse shine on me,
He healed the sick and he raised the dead
Let your light from the lighthouse shine on me,

CHORUS
I know I got religion and I ain't ashamed
Let your light from the lighthouse shine on me,
Angels in heaven gonna call my name
Let your light from the lighthouse shine on me,

CHORUS

One of these days, ‘bout twelve o'clock
Let your light from the lighthouse shine on me,
This ol' world gonna reel and rock
Let your light from the lighthouse shine on me,

CHORUS

Ooops, forgot a couple verses. Suspect this is a gospel zipper song and you could add just about any that match the meter -- like ones about Moses and the children dressed in red. The two more that are on the tape are:
"Paul and Silas bound in jail
Ain't nobody to go their bail"
and
"One of these days before very long
The whole wide world gonna sing this song"

the "let your..." line is the second and fourth line each time.

Vixen asked me a lighthouse question, so I did some research. I thought you might like to see what I came up with. I posted it here to check my links, but then I decided I might as well leave it up.
-Joe Offer-

Hi, Vic - I'll bet the photo you're talking about is the one by Jean Guichard of the La Jument light, taken in December, 1989. It's off the coast of Brittany. A look at a map of France will show you how treacherous the Brittany coast can be. It sticks way out there into the ocean, with nothing to protect it. Click here for a page of Guichard photos - you'll get enlarged versions if you click on the pictures. Click here for a virtual tour of Brittany. If you click here, you'll get another interesting photo, but you have to wait a moment for the entire thing to load so you get the full effect.
A search of the Digital Tradition for Lighthouse turns up only nine songs, but you can find a few more at Cowpie, including the wonderful Ready for the Storm, by Dougie MacLean. Finally, this is the gospel lighthouse song that I like best - click here (but you won't go far).
How's that for a musical, photographic lighthouse tour? Hope you enjoyed it.

I'm wondering about the Lighthouse song that Barbara posted above. I think it's my favorite lighthouse song, although I really like "Ready for the Storm." I've heard it called "The Lighthouse" or "Light from the Lighthouse." I've had difficulty learning the tune - can anybody post it for me? I also wonder if it's really traditional, or if there's a songwriter's name available somewhere. I have the song on the new CD by Bob Zentz, but he strays a bit far from the tune I've heard before.
If you can come up with a tune but can't deal with MIDITEXT, e-mail it to me or Alison or Alan or Australia - you can find us here.

The Seekers also did a fine version of Let The Light From Your Lighthouse in the mid 60's, with verses ralating to "I got that new religion, ain't no doubt about it" and" ..the Jordan River, it's chilly and cold". I have the lyrics in print somewhere - I'll try to find it. Regards, John.

From: Barry Finn

Joe you missed one (one of mine). I can't do the blue clickey thing so here:
IDA LEWIS

Ida Lewis left Newport at the age of 15,
Moved onto Lime Light Rock in the 1850's
Her father was a captain, now keeper of the light
Soon the duties feel on Ida to keep the lamps burning bright.

Her sisters & brother she'd row to school every day
In a small open lifeboat across the rough bay
From his wheelchair her father would watch through the storms
In horror as Ida would row the children back home.

Renowned for her skills no matter the weather
At swimming or rowing no man was her better
At the age of 16 she had saved 4 mens' lives
By the time she retired she had saved 25

There are saints on the water & demons in the sea
One & all they praised Ida for her great bravery
On the very night this women died, who had lived on the shoals
Every bell on evry boat in Newport did toll

Now they've renamed that rock the Ida Lewis Rock Light
And in her honor today the lights are still burning bright
But sometimes at night when it's rough & it's cold
Some claim to see Ida pulling boys from the foam.

I sang this at the getaway, I think you were there, late Sun. eve.

There also a a song from Gale Huntington's "Songs the Whalermen Sang", sung to the same tune as "The Rose Of Allendale" (no chorus) called "The Beacon Light". The last 2 lines of the verses become a refrain:

"as full in sight the beacon light
came streaming o'er the wave"

The words to that I posted in an old thread 'Rose of Allendale'.
The Digital Tradition has had my expressed permission for this song

Joe, I just sent you a Voizmail (mediaring) thing with me singing a couple verses. I I copied it to myself, and if yours sounds like mine, good luck figuring out the time. (Which is the reason I used the MediaRing -- I'm terrible at transcribing those swinging gospel things, I can sing 'em, but figure out the time???? Nope.)
Maybe I just need a faster computer but MediaRing leaves me distinctly underwhelmed. Give it a listen and see what you think.

Thanks, Barbara. You sounded pretty good, but you sound better in person. The only versions I'd heard often were the one by Bob Zentz (good, but not traditional), and the one by the Seekers (good, but I can't sing like Judith Durham). Your rendition made it easier to figure out, although I'd still like to see somebody post the tune so it can be added to the database.
Barry, I did hear you sing that song, and I meant to thank you for it. It's a good song. Isn't it great that we've been able to hear each other sing in person lately?

I saved as an NWC file (which I sent to you.) To convert back, I pasted the ABC above into a Word page, saved as text only, then opened that file in abc2nwc to convert back to NWC.

I can't see any import options that shouild have changed it either. Not important though- the melody and timing are intact.

The song "Shine on Me" (Let the Lighthouse) is often listed in hymnals as "Maitland, C. M." by George N. Allen.

As sung by Ernest Phipps and the Holiness Singers, it is # 54 in the "Anthology of American Folk Music," Vol. 2 (Available from Camsco). Original Bluebird 5540A. Notes say "Recently it is almost always performed as here, with the tempo much faster after several slow verses; a device first recorded by Willie Johnson (Columbia 14490), Blind Willie Johnson, "Shine on Me." Also Carlisle Quartet (Bluebird 6855).

That's about it, Noreen. But Gwynneth and the Shellbacks sing dc|B6BA|G6 "Let it shine, Let it shine", while the DT has "Let it shine ON", so Mario may need to adjust it slightly.

Tune for "Shine on Me" (Lighthouse)- The old tune "Maitland" in slow time may be heard at Cyberhymnal: Maitland
George N. Allen, 1812-1877.
Maitland, in different tempos, has been used for several songs.

George N. Allen was also responsible for the tune we use to "Oh Bury Me Not On the Lone Prairie."

Q, the MIDI of Maitland you link to is a different tune from the only one I've heard for this.

Change the tempo and rhythm a bit, and the similarity appears. This has happened with many songs. The relationship is clearer on the Phipps recording (track 13, cd 2-B, of the Anthology) than on the up-tempo, more modern recordings.

This is the lighthouse that I know.
Vestal and Howard Goodman.....he recently passed away.
They do this song beautifully.
You should be able to find there website....
and I know the songs on their c.d.
This is the part that I know and it has the
most beautiful melody.

Oh....I thank God for the lighthouse
I owe my life to Him.
For Jesus is the Lighthouse
and from the .....of sin
He has shown his light around me.
That I could clearly see.
If it wasn't for that lighthouse.
Tell me..
Where would this ship be.

Recorded in New Orleans, the record number noted in a previous post.

There are as many versions as singers. Many slight variations in the tune to fit the words which are sometimes shoe-horned in to the verses. Here is another:

Lyr. Add: LIGHTHOUSE (SHINE ON ME)

Shine on me
Shine on me
Let the light of your lighthouse
Shine on me.

I am a sailor out on the ocean
Far from land as I can be
But, I am not afraid
No, I will never worry
'Cause the light of your lighthouse
Shines on me.

Built upon a rock,
Carved from a mountain
Laid upon the shore
Pointing out to sea
Stands a mighty light,
And I will never worry
'Cause the light of your lighthouse
Shines on me.

Oh, the sea gets rough,
And the boat may get a-rocking
And the gale winds blow.
The waves grow as tall as trees
But there's peace in my heart,
And I will never worry
'Cause the light of your lighthouse
Shines on me.

Don't know who did this one, but it is on Lighthouse Records. Lighthouse

Haven't found the Waylon Jennings version yet.

"Shine On Me" by Ernest Phipps and his Holiness Quartet (Bluebird B5540. Bristol, Tennessee. October 30, 1928) can be heard HERE.

The African American Heritage Hymnal (GIA, 2001, no. 527) has this version (with the same text as the one in Songs of Zion, 1981, no. 227):

                SHINE ON ME

1. I heard the voice of Jesus say,
    "Come unto me and rest,
Lay down thou weary one, lay down
    Thy head upon my breast."

Shine on me, Shine on me.
Let the light from the lighthouse,
Shine on me. Shine on me. Shine on me.
Let the light from the lighthouse
          Shine on me.

2. With pitying eyes the Prince of Peace
    Beheld our helpless grief;
He saw, and O amazing love!
    He came to our relief.
