Folk Music in Budapest, Hungary

Does anyone know anything about any Folk Music venues in Budapest ?

Linda (Essex Girl) and I are due to be over there during the summer and would like to know if there are any bars etc where we might be able to play. We expect that there will be Hungarian Folk Music/Dance laid on at the tourist level, but we'd like to find somewhere where we could join in a bit.

Yeah, I'd be interested too, 'cos I'll be there for 3 days (15/16/17 July) in 3 weeks' time. I wouldn't be able to play, but I'd like to hear something other than the tourist fare.

Zoltan Hegedus 600 Kechkamet,Cedalalaz ut 53/a is a traditional folk musician, the town is not too far from Budapest and has a fabuluous music museum where they let you try all the instruments - there are rooms of them. I did meet a guy who does traditional folk dance ( we met in a TEA shop....!) when we sang at a wedding there- you can get a contact to him by phoning Roxanne on 0036 28 432 851, she speaks perfect English and loves to meet us Brits.

Abuwood...

If Zoltan is the same chap that I met in 1995, then I would wholeheartedly agree.!! A most amazing house! I particularly remember the Granite Xylophone. Also Keksckemet is the the birthplace of Kodaly, and the Carillon on the wall of the town hall is guarenteed to keep you awake all night!

Dave...Have a great time!

Thanks so far - looking interesting. How far is this place away from Budapest ?

Our time might be rather limited because the main reason that we're going is so that Linda can give her daughter a hand with grandaughter while grandson (who has mild cerebral palsy) is attending the Peto Andras Institute.

From 30 July to 6 August, there's the Sziget festival.
This has modern music (mostly rock/metal), but also an extensive
folk programme. It is held on an island: click here .
