Lyr Add: The Job Song (Bob Clayton)

I don't normally post new lyrics, particularly here, where tradition counts, but I got this one to where it seems nearly finished, and, being topical, it has a short shelf life.

So here it is. No "finished" tune yet, but a notional one is there in my head. Now to transfer it to my fingers.

The Job Song

Don't make enough to get a tax break, son?
Left you out of the big tax-cut, and just the rich folks won?
Well, here's a hint on how to deal with your poor plight –
Just take a tip from the pundits of the Right:

Chorus: Get a job! Get another two or three!
Get a job! You know that livin' here ain't free!
You don't make enough to get back part of what they take;
If you can't afford your bread, you can eat cake.

We cut the working poor out of the tax-cut bill this year –
There wasn't quite enough to go around this time, we fear.
The well-off folks on top all got theirs, all right,
But it's welfare if we give the poor their mite.

Repeat Chorus:

While the moneyed folks get richer, the working folks get kids,
It keeps things in their proper place, and ain't you glad we did?
I mean, we got this tax-cut to help the country grow,
But you poor folks would just spend it all, you know.

Repeat Chorus:

So when a working man asks, "How come I don't get none?"
We answer, "Well, of course, this is the way it's always done.
We'd have to call it welfare if we gave your money back,
And welfare's the big no-no, that's a fact."

Repeat Chorus:

Aw, you should post your songs more often, Bob. They may not make it into the Digital Tradition (although several are in the DT), but they're always welcome in the Forum. If you come up with a MIDI for the tune, you can e-mail it to me and I'll put it in Mudcat MIDIs.
