What listings do you look at?

Sorry if this is in the wrong category, I know its a simple system, but I do get confussed. This isn't directly to do with music, but rather the music industry.

I am part of an artists co-operative promoting our events in Britain and I want to know where people look to find out whats going on in their areas.

I have a list of national/regional mags from the direct roots book thing, but if there are any other places you look at, direction would be welcomed.

Also, do you use the internet listings services? if so which are good ones, most of the ones I have been directed to seem to have stopped updating the sites.

I just thought, I do direct mailouts to the people on my database, and if anyone here wants a monthly listing sent for the following acts, just pm me your details and I'll put you on the list - we don't pass on information to other parties.

We are:

Steve Tilston
The Demon Barbers (band & roadshow)
Maggie Boyle (solo/duo/group)
The Witches of Elswick
Fay Hield & Damien Barber
Grace Notes
Black Swan Rapper

Hi Fay
Have a look at This collection of links to listings web sites in Jon Freeman's Folkinfo. There are some useful ones there.

It was modesty, I am sure that prevented Fay from posting the website clicky.

re: Alan C, modesty and ignorance! I don't know how to do the clicky thing yet. I havn't been brave enough to try it.

County folk magazines - efn, Unicorn, Folk London, Folk Write etc.
Flyers (mostly at CSH), for ceilidhs Webfeet.

Internet listings don't seem to work very well as many organisers don't provide listings as and when they are available - they have to have their arms twisted (very hard sometimes) for a press date.

(In checking half a dozen club web sites today, two had out of date listings.)

Time Out can make or break a gig in London.

Be careful about publicising events where you aren't the promoter. If a club is members only then they aren't allowed to advertise for customers "off the street". Islington only just avoided being closed down once because an artist sent our his own press release.

That sounds scary. Bugger, I'd better find out if I'm doing a good job, or getting lots of people into trouble instead. Thanks for the warning

Fay xx

Folk London is excellent, and commendable for having online listings as well as the printed version.

I use the Peterborough Folk Diary quite a lot - I'm on the mailing list and I know it is actively maintained. Martin Nail's site is a good starting point for English music all over the country.

Google searches often help with finding sites (try "folk " plus a day of the week and a county for instant tour-planning info!). There's no single resource that gets it all, and many (including some listed above) are out of date or link to sites that are out of date.
