Subject: Lyr Req: Mirabeau Bridge by Sam Larkin

"I had a dream and I gave it a name
The name that I gave it was your name.
- Sam Larkin, "Mirabeau Bridge"
Can anyone help me with the rest of the lyrics.
I heard James Keelaghan sing it in Glenfarg, Scotland.
Thanks

couldn't find the Larkin lyrics - but did find this poem - interesting in itself:

Mirabeau Bridge

Under the Mirabeau Bridge there flows the Seine
   Must I recall
Our loves recall how then
After each sorrow joy came back again

Let night come on bells end the day
The days go by me still I stay

Hands joined and face to face let's stay just so
   While underneath
The bridge of our arms shall go
Weary of endless looks the river's flow

Let night come on bells end the day
The days go by me still I stay

All love goes by as water to the sea
   All love goes by
How slow life seems to me
How violent the hope of love can be

Let night come on bells end the day
The days go by me still I stay

The days the weeks pass by beyond our ken
   Neither time past
Nor love comes back again
Under the Mirabeau Bridge there flows the Seine

Let night come on bells end the day
The days go by me still I stay

--Guillaume Apollinaire (1880 - 1918)

I went down to see the morning when the shutters all were drawn
And the sidewalk tables empty and the laughing voices gone
And from some upstairs window in the blue and grey of dawn
Came the faded sound of somebody who played my song

CHORUS: I had a dream and I gave it a name
And the name that I gave it was your name
I had a dream and I gave it a name
And the name that I gave it was your name

I was fighting phantom windmills made of nothing left to do
But live among the shadows of the days I made it through
With lies and false pretences that tomorrow would be new
And it was because just like a dream I discovered you.

And the Mirabeau Bridge is crowded with the ones who love the night
And the river laughing endlessly like the wild cafe life
Full of words from every language across the candle light
As it shines like love in the eyes that I meet tonight

You're welcome. I didn't have it in my lyrics folder, so I had to copy it from Sam's liner notes. You've never seen such liner notes. You need a microscope in order to read them!! All of the CD('Ransom')'s lyrics are printed on one side of a 2 page insert.

Anyway, it's a great song. A great sing-along chorus song too. I even use the chorus, believe it or not, on its own, as a lullabye in my early childhood music classes. The parents/caregivers love it.

Enjoy!

MIRABEAU BRIDGE
(Sam Larkin)

I went down to see the mornin
When the shutters all were drawn
And the sidewalk tables empty
And the laughing voices gone
And from some upstairs window
In the blue and grey of dawn
Came the faded sound of somebody
Who played my song

CHORUS:
I had a dream and I gave it a name
The name that I gave it was your name
I had a dream and I gave it a name
The name that I gave it was your

I was fighting phantom windmills
Made of nothin left to do
But live among the shadows
Of the days I made it through
With lies and false pretences
That tomorrow would be new
And it was 'cause just like a dream
I discovered you

REPEAT CHORUS

And the Mirabeau Bridge is crowded
With the ones who love the night
And the river laughing endlessly
Like the wild café life
Full of words from every language
Across the candle-light
As it shines like love in the eyes
That I meet tonight

END

That's it. Cheers, Sam

One of my favorites, Sam, since the first time I heard it at Folk At The Forum in Cobourg's Victoria Hall. It seems to have entered the repertoire of many Ontario performers.

It doesn't just have beautiful lyrics - it has a beautiful tune, too. Glad to have the really truly original words, Sam. Thanks!

Sam Larkin passed away Monday, October 28, 2013. His beautiful song Mirabeau Bridge is being sung by many today as we hear the news.

Here is a CBC link to both Sam and Ron Sexsmith singing Mirabeau Bridge.

Hi, Backwoodsman. The third link works in the US. It's supplied by Topic, so I thought it would be available in the UK. Feel free to post a link to the Keelaghan recording available in your country.
Thanks.

Thanks Joe. This is the only video I could find of JK singing 'The Mirabeau Bridge'. I **think** the performance was at the memorial concert for Sam, and James is accompanied by the superb multi-instrumentalist, Hugh McMillan, on bass. It don't get much better than this.....
