I have read my latest copy of Folk North West and was intrigued by the World Puff -a-Box championships (18th) held at the Glen Farg Folk Festival. I for one will try and get up north for it next year.

What other strange events take place at Folk Festivals as part of their annual programme.

I have heard of the World Stone Skimming championships somewhere???

Okay, I'll bite: What does "World Puff-a-Box championships" mean?

I found this, at http://www.glenfargfolkclub.com/folkfeast.htm:

"For over 20 years this unique competition has given oodles of fun to children, parents, and grandparents alike. It is unbelievable how popular it is. But don't be fooled into thinking it is just fun. Oh no, there is a distinct air of competitiveness with players urging their puff to be the highest; the best trajectory; closest to skim under the chandelier; but most of all the longest distance! It's not much to ask really is it? Well it is if the tray fails to leave its docking station, or flies off the course, or lands in the bowels of a chandelier never to be seen again!

"A keen competitor for several years now, victory had always eluded the ever keen Jim Malcolm. (Keep the ladder hidden, or Jim would be up it to rip the famous chandeliers from the ceiling) But at last he followed in the tiny footsteps of his daughter Beth (junior winner 2007) Victory was his this year with the longest puff of 5m 06cm. Well done to Jim."

And this, at http://www.footstompin.com/forum?threadid=53097:

"Back in the restaurant at 3.00pm for the milestone 21st World Puff-a-Box championships. For 50p you can just watch but for 50p a box (maximum 3 goes) why not join the fun! The object is to blow - using your mouth – the inside of an empty matchbox the furthest distance, rules are available on request! Sponsored by Bluebell Matches."
