So it's an "installment" this month instead of just a "thread", huh? Can it be an "episode" in August? Or maybe a "chapter" or a "stanza" or a "movement". That's it! "Punch the Horse's August Movement!"

It is with deep regret that i have to inform you all that Peter Dean know to you all as that old git who can sing a bit has unfortunatly been kidnaped by the remaining three members of The Wurzels fan club. They are demanding that Pete and the boys reform their Wurzels tribute band forwith and they have promised Petes safe return at the venue of the comeback gig.

PLEASE REFORM I FOR ONE IS MISSING PETE!

NO NONONONONONONONONO Keep him!

As much as I love Pete we can't give in to terrorism we must stop the reformation of the Wurzels tribute band at all costs. (Don't worry pete we'll get the Humberside Undercover Police Division on the job....... so we'll see you in about 20 years then)

Will the Enormous Penis (no, NO large print or colours- that would be too, too vulgar) be getting another airing, Pete? Or do you intend to try it out with the Meisterettes first?

Uillean or Irish pipes - they consist of a chanter (wot he plays the tunes on) three drones (self explainatory) and three regulators (the things with all the keys on them)which he can play cords on or single notes that in concert with the drones make cords and can be used to provide a harmonic accompaniement. (Oops spelling). Here endeth the lesson sf.

Sweetfire, the other guy is called Dickie and the pipes he was playing are an Irish instrument called uillean pipes - pronounced uillean - sometimes known as union pipes after the "union" of sound they make.

I see that unspeakable bounder zoomercrap1.5% has made an appearance again -dont encourage him Norreen!!!!!

Why thank you honey (but I'm not worried). Dicky is an excellent piper we play different types of music so comparisons are futile (they are anyway)and I know that I am a competent piper, excellence will take a while longer (but I'm going to work at it and keep working at it untill old age and senility stops me - yes that would be about two months away then you sarky buggers!).

Gotta say, ladies and gents, that I have been totally confused and delightfully so as I - a PTH newby from the US - tried to figure out what this was all about.

Thanks for the lovely laughs. And I REALLY enjoyed the dialects I could hear in your postings.

And I REALLY wish I could have attended the playing. Did I get that right.... this was about a performance of some kind?

You are all such a riot! Can I tune in for the August 'event' and be just as enthralled??
Thanks loads,

Hello Martabees - glad you are enjoying our little corner of this alternative universe. Its fun and we like it! It can get a little confusing in 'ere. PTH play gigs which are advertised and often discussed in these threads and the rest of the time we are talking about sessions or just plain old fashioned utter rubbish. Mostly it is the later.

Oh and incedentaly I've heard a roooomor that our vertuoso bum flute player has started taking steroids so that he can hit those high notes better. Wonder what he was mostly playing last night? KJ?

Goxhill (The Brocklesby Hunt pub)is a session, of sorts. It has been going on on a Wednesday night for the past 13 years. At times, it has been the only session in the whole of the world and was populated by every musician in the same. Many people have commenced or recommenced their musical activity there having always been met with support, encouragement and indifference in equal measure.

People travel from Sweden, the Scilly Isles and Barrow-on-Humber in order to be there. The Cara people and their manager are often in attendance but Oakley's violin sounds scratchier than normal in the peculiar acoustic environment. They (Cara)are currently rehearsing material for a second CD - of the planned 13 tracks, 12 are original and this includes three new songs.

The Goxhill session has never been the subject of advertising or promotion yet has endured for quite a long time. So something is probably right.

As one who has travelled from Lancashire to Goxhill (via a certain small dairy farm on the Humber's muddy banks), I can confirm that it exists.

Will one of the tracks on this new Cara CD (which you just happenend to mention in passing but aren't plugging or anything, oh no) be of special interest to me perchance?

Raggytash - thanks for your cautionary words, but don't worry. I'm not in any danger of That Bridge. The bridge that Billie Joe McAlister jumped from was the TallahATCHEE bridge, not Tallahassee, and I believe that puts it in northern Mississippi, not Florida. I recently drove across what may have indeed been that bridge and it was in a very ahem....rural.... section of the world. Tallahassee is not rural. We even have cable modem which is my new standard of live worth living.

Best to all of you sillies,
Martha in Tallahassee (Florida-USA) where it actually snows a few flakes every year in spite of the press that is sent worldwide which is largely relevant to middle and south Florida.

Well, myself and Mrs DeMister went to Barton last night, but after 45 minutes of queueing with several thousand other bikes my testicles were about at boiling point, Mrs Demister was thoroughly miserable and we were still only at the top of the bloody hill! So we turned around, rode back to Beverley and had a thoroughly civilised pint outside Nellies. Hence my non-appearance at Goxhill.

Simple; 1) Soak overnight in cold water
       2) Rub in well the white of an egg in half a pint of guiness
       3) Soak overnight
       4) Wipe with a vinegar soaked soft cotton cloth
       5) Soak overnight
       6) Wash on the synthetics cycle of wahing machine
       7) Leave to dry for 48 hours
       8) Bring back the original sheen with a nut oil
       9) Don't play the dulcimer whilst drinking a bottle of
          tomato ketchup!

The reason I wasn't at this satrday's PTH gig was because I was at the Rothbury Traditional Music Festival (in Northumberland) where I took part in the Lowland (Border) piping competition. (I promised Sue I would enter before she died). Bearing in mind that I have been playing Border pipes for 5 weeks I am happy to anounce that I came second! I was beaten by Mat Seatle a verteran piper and professional musician.

I'm realy quite pleased with myself!

And speaking of Tuesday nights, has Uday come up with any grub yet. Will venture forth tonight, and see, after I have tarried an hour under the spell of Mrs Dawson. The ayatollah tells me that Uday has ideas about lodging diners in our room. Why is food the pox of decent pubs? Dudgeon of significant altitude may be required.

A terrific session in the Slop tonight with massed icing bags and lunatic fiddlers.

However, Uday has jacked the beer up 30p a pint, and has given us a week's notice to find a new home. He is rather conveniently diverting his 30ps, and complaining that he can't afford the £200 PEL.

So next week is the last Slop session for the foreseeable future. It would be braw to make it a big one, but perhaps we should all buy a half pint and nurse it all night. I don't see why we should line Uday's pockets when he's giving us the heave-ho.

The ayatollah is looking into moving the session to the Queen's in Barton, but that looks like a Monday night. I will make some enquiries at the Haven Inn, Barrow, where the new landpeople have shown interest. Ironically, that is where Uday moved from..........

The fooking stupid bastards who work for local gov are shits!
Here's the tale.. I am on long term sick (stress related) and get an income of £64.35 per week (woopie) my rent on my flat is £74.59 per week they were paying it for me so that was nice and I was getting along ok. Now they've decided that they are paying me too much and have reduced my housing benefit by £21.22 per week leaving me with £43.13 to live on!!!!!!!! (sorry to go on about this here but it is music related in that I will no longer be able to afford to go to sessions)

So tonight may well be the last PTH gig I go to for a while.

Know anyboby who will pay me for my body?

Cheers jOhn

I've launched an appeal (did it straight away) phoned the buggers up and gave them hell. Emailed them straight after with the details of my appeal. Do you know what they said.... They can't do anything because decisions are made by an independant assessor who has visited the property and made calculations based on the size of the flat and the area it is in! No bastard has ever visited this flat thats for sure! However they will look at my appeal and consider it within the next 6 weeks, meanwhile I can apply for Income support. These people clearly have no idea about how additional stress like this can set a persons recovery back by months! Fooking bastards!

Anyway Sorry to go on about this here but I just had to sound off!

My, my, that husband of mine is diverse. Just seen a pair of spectacles to wear on the velocipede, advertised at his website, www.oakley.com descibed as a snip at £139. It's the unobtainium ear socks and the plutonite lenses that make them so reassuringly expensive.

MICHAEL !!!!!

You must go to Nora Murphys Bar at Brandon, it has to be the most wonderfully located Bar in the WORLD. Go over the Connor Pass, hang a left at the bottom through Cloghane follow the road towards Brandon Point and you come to Brandon, a little road goes off to the right and takes you down to a small quay and the Bar. It is run by Mary & Patrick Murphy (Patrick is the son of the late Nora)
It is a very simple bar, fire place at one end of a single room with a uneven floor and bar at the other. Mary is the most generous lovely woman you could wish to meet, she is an absolute Angel. If you go tell them you know us or mention "The Mad Buggers" I am sure you will be treated as long lost cousins.
Then come back and tell me if you know of a bar in a better spot, 3000ft mountains to 2 sides, a glorious spread of sandy estuary, the Bay of Tralee in the front of you with the Magherees in the distance and the wild Atlantic to finish of the picture.
Paradise on Earth

For anybody who's interested, Sunday 3rd of August will be the 60th First Sunday of the Month Session/Singaround at the Sun Inn in Beverley. I started this session five years ago at Nellies following the Festival, with a view to continuing the Festival feel once a month throughout the year. It is, I believe, the best attended afternoon of song, music, and beer for many miles around, and has been visited by people from all over the UK.

It has been successful in it's aim, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it, indeed I'm very proud of it. I have decided that after the next one, I am retiring as m/c, to hand the mantle over to somebody else to keep it live for the next five years. I have suggested ossonflags, and he would be proud to, though we will discuss this with everybody who attends the next session.

I would be extremely happy and chuffed if my last afternoon as the gaffer could be attended by as many of you as possible to make it a memorable occasion. I have met many fine singers and musicians in the past at this session, indeed made many long lasting friends. I hope to see you there. Perhaps the McPhat Boy himself may fancy an appearance?

The session, as always, will commence at 2pm and run till about 6/7pm.

Keep the Music playing, my friends.

Pete.

I think that everyone owes a big debt of gratitude to Mister De Mister and to his session which has consistantly drawn together many different styles of music and even got singers and tune players to sit in the same room and enjoy each others' company and music (gasp!). It's true that it's an incredibly well-attended session, drawing quality singers and players from around the country (and beyond), and encouraging those who are new to singing or playing.

We'll have a word with the large Scotsman this weekend and see if he's free (or at least reasonably inexpensive).

Here's to the next five years. I trust you'll still be attending, Pete.

Subject: RE: PTH July Installment
From: The DeanMeister

I will indeed be still attending, and I sincerely hope that everybody else will too. I would be very sad if that did not occur. But I won't feel obliged to be there every month all afternoon.

And thanks for the kind words, Les. I hope the tune meisters as well as the singers continue to keep this a great session for many years to come.

And yeah, I would love it if the big boy could attend.

I should like to extend my special thanks to Peter for his commitment and hard work to our Sunday session over the last five years.
His boundless enthusiasm, charm and undoubted musical ability will indeed be a hard act to follow.

We have broken a few barriers over the years regarding the singers versus musicians scenario. This has become, with everyone's input, what a good musical gathering should be, a proper mixture of song, music, joining in and not least respect for others and encouragement for young people who are just starting out.

Peter has asked me to MC the session for the future and I told him I would be proud and flattered to do it. However, I would appreciate your comments, support or otherwise on this, AND LETS KEEP MUSIC LIVE.

I'll be there too. I can't believe that the first session that I attended in Beverley is losing its leader.

The Nellies session as it was then was a great introduction to the woderful world of East Riding sessions and I'm proud to have attended most of the 60 since that first one. It started just three days after I moved to Beverley and I'm really glad that I went to that first day.

Following Pete's Sunday session at the Sun this week a great band from Leeds St Louis Zipper will be making their first appearance.

They play a wide range of material from 1920s standards to blues and skiffle. I predict that they will become Sun Inn favourites alonside PTH and the Doghouse skiffle - miss them at your peril

Roger
