Of course it wouldn't work in America would it?

They don't seem to use stones as a measure of weight, just pounds. Which I find totally confusing, since I don't know my sixteen times table to enable convert the pounds to stones, not without a piece of paper handy...

But "You got 256 pounds...", which is what it works out at, just wouldn't do in the song.

Kevin, I think you will find that there are 14 pounds to a stone ( 8 stone = 1 Hundreweight which = 112lbs)

You're quite right. I get mixed up with Galleons and Sickles and Knuts and such.

And I don't know my fourteen times table either...

It's a wonderful song. The Admiral's wife (Pearl) sings it too....

It's not just the words that make it a wonderful song, but the unscripted actions.

The words posted by Liz don't include the "Dum, de-dum, de-dum de-dum dum" between the chorus and the start of the next verse.

Hazels' original version didn't have the scat bits in between verses, I cribbed them from Mrs Admiral Pearl.

It will be in the new version of the DT, in progress, not yet turned over to the guy who turns DOS into Windows & MAC.

Hey Pearl, Jude and Kitty - if I put the 2 1/2 stone back on again can I join in the chorus again at S&A?

Emma - if you put the 2 1/2 stone back on you could probably enter and win the Doom, Gloom and Despondency workshop at Sidmouth..

Well I still sing it and I've lost 1 1/2 stone since March....

I think you can probably sing it at any shape and size, except Callista Flockheart....

It works great in America! Morticia had us all in stitches, and then singing along on the chorus at last year's Getaway. If I remember correctly, we made (begged) her to sing it every night.

Hey guys, only 4 months to October!!

Interesting ... I've got Max Bygraves' recording, but that's called "Seventeen Stone", and it's not quite the same song.

If you pronounce "stones" as "stuns" in the old-fashioned way, it's a better parody (vide "Ask a p'liceman": How to fly, though twenty "stun").

Steve

Aagh! I just admitted to possessing Max Bygraves records!!

Who needs to be 16 stone to sing it? You just have to have attitude. As for Callister Flockhart, I would say that even she could sing it if she did it in a suitably ironical way but I'm not sure if she's that good an actress.

Speaking of putting attitude into songs, I do treasure the memory of Lorraine's performance at last year's Song & Ale of "If I were a Blackbird" complete with actions. It gave it whole new meanings to it & I'll never think of that song in the same way again. Shame it wasn't video'd

Thanks... all done for health reasons, rather than any desire to look like the aforementioned Ms Flockheart, although if it gets me Harrison Ford as a boyfriend.....

Hey, less knocking of Callista Flockhart, please !

Apart from being a wondrously talented actress, she is the fantasy of every male on the planet.

I must refute the statement that Callista Flockhart is every males fantasy, talented actress she may be but in my opinion she is a 'nee tits sparrow legged spelck'. More likely candidates that are well known would be Cindy Crawford, Kate Winslett (before she went on diet)
but my personal favorite has to be Dawn French, now she's a proper woman, something to cuddle.

She was sixteen stone
All muscle and bone
And I might have been a millionaire
She might have been mine
But she fell in a decline
Through swallowing a mouse in her beer

I would like to correct my previous thoughtless and ill-judged statement that Callista Flockhart is the fantasy of every man on the planet.

I should have said "....almost every man on the planet...."

Do you know, Dawn French was my drama teacher at school? S'true! She left just before our 'O' levels to go and do something at the Edinburgh fringe, which turned out to be "Comic Strip Presents....." She was slightly thinner but essentially the same. A very genuine person.

A good laugh, but actually a very good teacher.

There are many body shapes and there are many "tastes" to reflect this, ie there's something for everyone!!!!
