You can't come up with a better one than that. As for "The Beatles", that was a bit silly sounding, but it didn't matter, cos the band itself was superb. And then there's "The Band". Now THAT's a masterpiece of literal simplicity, if ever there was one. As for funny/ridiculous/gross band names, how about: Bunchafuckingoofs, Cardboard Brains, Dead Kennedys, Nazi Dog and the Viletones, the Fugs, Limp Biscuit, the Swollen Members, the Slits, and Stark Naked and the Fleshtones. - LH |

Then the magazine Rolling Stone took its name from (most likely) the Dylan song. As to why Dylan used the phrase "like a rolling stone" in his song...just because it sounded right, I imagine, rather than that it had anything to do with Mick Jagger and the boys. In more recent times, Mick and the boys recorded the Dylan song on a live album, and did it well too. Too bad Barry Manilow never had a band name for his sidemen. Hey, let's think up one! After a period of rest and re-asssement, and some changes in the line-up, we'd release "Same Difference". Disappointed by critical hostility and lukewarm audience reaction, the new band would disperse for about ten years, before re-forming once more to cash in on the nostalgia market with "The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same". Then we'd do a lucrative farewell tour and disband for good. Well, it never happened, and now it never will. If anyone wants to borrow the idea, they're welcome. Wassail! |

Pre-Elvis 50's. The Stones were enamored with the whole blues sound; they covered a lot of blues material on the early albums, and named one of those albums after Chess Records' address in Chicago. You needed to be a Chem. Eng. graduate to get that one (although I did meet it in Chemistry A-Level). It's the process of converting an alliphatic (long carbon-chain) amide, to an amine, losing one carbon atom in the process. Bored ? Well, after explaining all that to the audience, there would hardly be enough time to do the rest of the gig, which may explain why they never shot to fame and fortune. How about "The The" ? This has the side-benefit of being unpronounceable in Yorkshire. |

I've got on tape a track by a Hull-based band called Roger's Interview (but no-one in Hull professes to have heard of them!)There's also Morris and the Minors (I met Morris, who told me he wrote The Deserter now sung by Fairport) and Slim Panatella and the Mellow Virginias (I think Slim was Simon Mayer the mandolin player). |

Another crowd driving to a gig saw a billboard which said "Fit Kilkenny Remoulds" so they called the band Fit Kilkenny & the Remoulds. I've always wanted to call a band either Johnny Foreskin & the Drawbacks or Harry Haemorrhoid & the Piledrivers. |

My first garage band was named after our keyboard player's mother because she allowed us to practice in her house -- then band was called "Mrs. Rizzo". My brother sat in on occassion with The Lemon Pipers. Then there were Atomic Roosters, Foghat...there's a Florida Folk band called "Sno Rogers" after a fictional baseball player...We're thinking of renaming our current band as "Grumpy Old Men". Maybe the Spaw and Cletus Roadside Review. |
