A few years back, there was a bluegrass outfit playing out of Milwaukee calling themselves "Grass, Food & Lodging" and using a logo patterned after the large green signs appearing alongside America's freeways.

In the 60s we had a bluegrass band in New Zealand called "Eloitious (sp?)Fingerpicks, and the Aristocratic Skillet-Lickers - with Fiddling Mother Colleen". Having spent hours practicing getting my tongue round the title, I got up on stage, and announced them - only to be told "We've just changed our name to 'Hamilton County Bluegrass Band
'!". Aaargghh...

I think the most brilliant band name of all time was "The Rolling Stones". You can't come up with a better one than that.

As for "The Beatles", that was a bit silly sounding, but it didn't matter, cos the band itself was superb.

And then there's "The Band". Now THAT's a masterpiece of literal simplicity, if ever there was one.

As for funny/ridiculous/gross band names, how about: Bunchafuckingoofs, Cardboard Brains, Dead Kennedys, Nazi Dog and the Viletones, the Fugs, Limp Biscuit, the Swollen Members, the Slits, and Stark Naked and the Fleshtones.

I think Hank Wangford on his own was funny enough considering he was a Harley St gaenacologist. But he did have a band and the lead singer (real name Melanie Hrrold) called herself Irma Seetas, sweet little thing she was.

Remember that era when it was cool to give bands names like: the Shirelles, the Shondells, the Ronnettes, and that sort of thing? Now what would you call that style of band naming? It's amazing, people's search to be cool, isn't it?

"Stones" began their career about 1962, Dylan's (great) record was 1965(or 6?).

06 Jul 03 - 01:41 AM (#977641)
Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names
From: Little Hawk

1965 is right for the Dylan song. Then the magazine Rolling Stone took its name from (most likely) the Dylan song. As to why Dylan used the phrase "like a rolling stone" in his song...just because it sounded right, I imagine, rather than that it had anything to do with Mick Jagger and the boys. In more recent times, Mick and the boys recorded the Dylan song on a live album, and did it well too.

Too bad Barry Manilow never had a band name for his sidemen. Hey, let's think up one! Someone start a thread to do that, please. I have to go to bed NOW.

Deckman (Bob) might like 'Sweaty Nipples', but for groups who really 'get down to basics' you'd have to go a long way to beat '10cc' & 'The Loving Spoonful', both of which (apparently) refer to the average quantity of male ejaculata during sex

Subject: RE: BS: Favorite Band Names
From: MikeofNorthumbria

As a youth, I fantasised about calling my first proper band "The Same".

Our debut album would be entitled "The Same to You!", quickly followed by "Same Again", and then "More of the Same". After a period of rest and re-asssement, and some changes in the line-up, we'd release "Same Difference".

Disappointed by critical hostility and lukewarm audience reaction, the new band would disperse for about ten years, before re-forming once more to cash in on the nostalgia market with "The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same". Then we'd do a lucrative farewell tour and disband for good.

Well, it never happened, and now it never will. If anyone wants to borrow the idea, they're welcome.

Wassail!

Not to beat a dead horse, but if memory serves me
Muddy Waters recorded "Rolling Stone" or "I'm A Rolling
Stone" in the early 50's. Pre-Elvis 50's.

The Stones were enamored with the whole blues sound; they covered
a lot of blues material on the early albums, and named one of those albums after Chess Records' address in Chicago. Maybe recorded
some of it there. I'm sure it's on a web site somewhere.

Correct, Cluin, but they spelled it this way: Bunchafuckingoofs

In that fashion they were able to advertise in the Toronto Star and so on, instead of being censored for daring to use the "F" word in print. I think they may have been the most honestly named musical group in history, and the name gave them instant solidarity with their fans as well...

At University, I heard of some Chemistry students who formed a band called, "Hoffman Degredation".

You needed to be a Chem. Eng. graduate to get that one (although I did meet it in Chemistry A-Level). It's the process of converting an alliphatic (long carbon-chain) amide, to an amine, losing one carbon atom in the process.

Bored ? Well, after explaining all that to the audience, there would hardly be enough time to do the rest of the gig, which may explain why they never shot to fame and fortune.

How about "The The" ? This has the side-benefit of being unpronounceable in Yorkshire.

Interesting to read these names as my my band "Name that Band" is as you might guess, looking for a name.

Some suggestions :-

Phil Dirt and the Shovels
UB50
Meanderthals
Mott the Poophole

If anyone has a real good band name going cheap, let me know

Bob

If you play the current BOOM! BOOM! noise, you could do worse than "Sub-Sonic Youth." (It's Free.)

From college days, Doug Clark and the Hot Nuts - a truly outrageous southern bar band.

Bob Hitchcock, I once played in a group called None of the Above - we couldn't agree on a name either. And who could forget Dr. Kilmer's Jug Band, Medicine Shoiw and Storm Door Company.

We had a band in Cork called the Dancing Bastards From Hell. Another crowd driving to a gig saw a billboard which said "Fit Kilkenny Remoulds" so they called the band Fit Kilkenny & the Remoulds. I've always wanted to call a band either Johnny Foreskin & the Drawbacks or Harry Haemorrhoid & the Piledrivers.

Meloncoly Olly and the Loving Subcultures ( 1966 )
Solstis ( we had Sun ampliphiers 1968)
Dr Dopo Jam ( Copenhagen1970 they knew exactly what they were doing )
Clay Wolfe & His Ugly Mugs ( Union Groves NC 1973 -75)
Polcat ( well playing music can be a lot of exercise and you cant shower on stage) For the Brits a polcat is a scunk . they smell

oh, good thread!

My faves are plays on words.

"The Often Ensemble"
A great 3 person group that uses their last names "Atcher, Beck and Kaul"
"The Dead Sea Squirrels"

Seen at a folk club not a million miles from Windsor - The Understaines (not hard to guess where they came from!)

Nigel Mooney's Hip Operation from dublin; not only do they have an awful name, but they're pretty good too. What about the Funking Barstewards?? Roger Ruskin Spear & His Giant Orchestral Wardrobe (aka his giant kinetic wardrobe) is #1 IMHO.

We have "The Bluegrass Souls" here in Australia. Said very fast.
My American true-love and I are sometimes: "Ida Clare and Jessoffel".
Does a duo qualify as a band?

My first garage band was named after our keyboard player's mother because she allowed us to practice in her house -- then band was called "Mrs. Rizzo". My brother sat in on occassion with The Lemon Pipers. Then there were Atomic Roosters, Foghat...there's a Florida Folk band called "Sno Rogers" after a fictional baseball player...We're thinking of renaming our current band as "Grumpy Old Men". Maybe the Spaw and Cletus Roadside Review.

My above entry should have read Ida Clare and Jess Orval. Sometimes we are Myrtle Green and Bracken Brown if we are in Scottish mode.
Also in Australia in the 70s there was "The Black Velvet Band" Someone must have used "The Blue Velvet Band" surely.

Them (Van Morrison's band in the mid 60s)

Norfolk and Good (say it quickly!)

Pickled Tink (dunno if there's such a band, but it sounds like there should be!!)

I've been involved with:
50-cent Tour
WheelWell (in case someone asked how we sounded, spoken like Elmer Fudd)
and currently Toulouse Cruise (aka Two Loose Screws)...

if someone is looking for a band name, I think that if you are towards an Irish/Celtic base, that "Dervish" could work, especially if high-energy is the norm...

Brian.
