What I'd like the most are 1) the Portuguese words that Joan Baez sang 2) a literal translation of those words (it doesn't have to fit the tune -- I can mess with it) 3) the original lyrics to the song if anyone knows what they are and 4) a literal translation of the original words if they differ from the Baez version. I'd also like to know any history about the song and would like to hear from anyone who has strong opinions on favorite recordings of this song. Gee, I don't want very much, do I? Thanks all Sharyn |

And Masato, I have the lyrics you directed me to (probably from the same site, but I don't know anything about this set of lyrics -- are they the ones sung in the film? The Joan Baez version is clearly different: I don't speak Portuguese but I can tell from listening to her recording that she is singing different words than these. I would like to know what she is singing (and where she got it) so that I can compare the texts. I'm also planning to learn the song and it will be easiest for me to do so if I can match a recording with a printed text so that I can learn accurate pronunciation and word recognition. More, more. All I know is that the 'h' in Manha (and most words with 'h') is pronounced ya parallel with the ñ in Spanish. OK, so not much help. |

The first 3 are from Black Orpheus 1959 movie - 1. Luiz Bonfa playing guitar, with a male singer (which may be him, but probably above-cited singer) doing first set of lyrics, 2. Solo guitar instrumental, Luiz Bonfa, 3. Luiz Bonfa accompanying a female singer, who hums a version, then sings the above-cited two extra verses plus a bonus track - 4. Bola Sete and group live, doing a medley which includes Manha |

Its been one of my favourite tunes, mostly in jazz versions, for many years. I finally realized that part of my problem was the poor transcription of the lyrics in Portuguese in the version I was trying to translate. Because of that I tried to make appropriate adjustments through a combination of lyrics taken from other texts. I also attempted to correct the punctuation; but may have missed something. I should point out that the first link Masato gave to an English translation contained a very good one (quite nearly literal) but it lacked some of the lyrics shown on other sites. This translation is also not entirely literal because such a thing would make no sense at all. However, I have tried to stay true to the Portuguese insomuch as is possible. I should inject some sort of disclaimer here as to the accuracy of my translation; but it was as good as I could do.
