Green Grow the Rashes/Rushes-pre-Burns?

Does anyone have a set of pre-Burns words to this Scottish song? (This is: Green grow the rashes O! Green grow the rashes O!
The sweetest hour that e'er I spent Were spent among the lasses O! - not to be confused with the counting song).

Burns collected several bawdy versions of this one.

I was under the impression that Burns was a *rewriter* rather than a collector?

Burns did both, and composed originals, so he can't be classifed as doing any one particular thing. Each piece from him has to be considered separately.

All the versions of this I have say they were *by* Burns. Any non-Burns attributions for this?

Two bawdy texts appear in The Merry Muses of Caledonia. The tune is also found pre-Burns as Grant's Rant. See entries at The Fiddler's Companion for comment from various sources.

This has been gone over before (see related threads, above). Although some have speculated about a pre-Burns version, one has not been found.
