I am trying to find the lyrics to, and the album name that Bob Gibson did a song about picking up a hitchhiker, on the road to Casper, the chorus, possibly the title of the song is,"it's just a thing I do, to while away a mendocino hour or two, it ain't no reflection on you...."

northfolk,

'Just a Thing I Do' can be found on Gibson's CD 'The Perfect High'.

I think the correct title is "Just a Thing I Do (Kathy O'Grady's Song)".

I believe this song was written by Shel Silverstein and Fred Kohller while Shel was visiting his freind in Mendecino, CA.

Hi, pdq. All the references I've seen (half a dozen) list Gibson as one of the writers. Back then, the lyric writer(s) got first mention. Things have changed over time. I believe the last name is Koller, no offence.

Maybe one of Bob's albums will have the credits listed?

Is this it?

(Jason, Mendocino (California) and Casper (Wyoming) are the names of towns.)

her name was kathy o'grady
a natural kind of mendocino lady
i picked her up hitchin' on the road to casper
i had a personal question to ask her

she said, "come up to my cabin on the mountain above"
i went up, and i fell in love
next morning i asked her if she'd be my wife
she told me her philosophy of life.

it's just a little thing i do
to while away an hour or two
let me warn you 'fore you're too involved
this ain't the place to get your problems solved.

it's just a little game i play
to get me through a mendocino rainy day
it ain't no reflection on you
it's just a little thing i do.

Thanks a lot, Leeneia - Not familiar with these towns at all! The only difficult point is solved now. Here are the lyrics:

JUST A THING I DO (KATHY O'GRADY'S SONG)
(Bob Gibson; Shel Silverstein)

Her name was Kathy O'Grady -
A natural Mendocino lady.
I picked her up hitchin' on the road to Casper.
I had a personal question to ask her.

She said, "Come up to my cabin on the mountain above."
I went up, and I fell in love.
Next morning I asked her if she'd be my wife;
She told me her philosophy of life.

She said, "It's just a thing I do
To while away an hour or two.
Let me warn you 'fore you're too involved:
This ain't the place to get your problems solved."

She said, "It's just a game I play
To get me through a Mendocino rainy day."
She said, "Bob, it ain't no reflection on you;
It's just a thing I do, I do -
It's just a thing I do."

She said, "I'm sorry you flew all the way from Paris,
Sorry you sold your chateau,
Sorry you sent out all those weddin' invitations,
But that's the way things go, go, go -

"Go back to your wife and your kids,"
She said, "Go back before you're sorry for what you did."
She said, "Don't worry, honey, I won't lose no sleep,
But you'd better leave now, before you're into deep!"

She said, "It's just a thing I do.
I've done it to quite a few.
Hey, does it make you any less of a man
To realize you were a one night stand?"

She said, "It's just a game I play
To get me through a Mendocino rainy day."
She said, "Baby, quit lookin' for the reason or rhyme -
You fellas do it to us, all the time!"

"It's just a thing I do
To while away an hour or two,"
She said, "Bob, it ain't no reflection on you;
It's just a thing I do, I do -
It's just a thing I do, I do -
It's just a thing I do!"

Based on the live versions from 1981 TV special "Just Folk" and 1980 album "The Perfect High".

Just got it onto YouTube. I think it's better than the album version on "The Perfect High".

I really love this song. So damn hilarious.

I uploaded a video of Bob singing the song in 1991: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IES3DCaeQrY

And I also did a cover of the song myself - hope it's not too bad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTt1cSlPIoI
