Who was Stacey Holms?

The name "Stac(e)y Holm(e)s comes up in a number of blues songs. Patton's Revenue Blues mentions him "with his shining star". Bessie Smith says "Down in Black Mountain Holmes can't keep a man in jail". There was even an R&B parody on Casey Jones called "Stacey Holmes".

I suspect he is or is based upon a real person. Anyone know?

Sorry Murray, I don't know about the Bessie Smith number, but I'm pretty sure you've misheard the lyric in Patton's Revenue Man Blues. I believe he sings something like this:

Go safe sweet home through, Lord, that shiny star,
(Aw sho')
I say, safe sweet home through that shining star,
(She don't need no tellin's, daddy, aw sho')
She don't need no tellin', daddy will take you in his car.

Sigh, I'm sure you are right Brian. I thought I found another trace of that elusive charater.
