From: Ritchie

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day,
When it's cold outside,
I've got the month on May.
I guess you say,
What can make me feel this way.
My girl,
My girl,
Talking about my girl.
I've got so much honey,
The bees envy me,
I've got a sweeter song,
Than the birds in the trees.
Well, I guess you say,
What can make me feel this way.
My girl,
Talking about my girl.
Hey, hey, hey,
Hey, hey, hey,
Ohh yeah.
I don't need no money,
Fortune or fame,
I've got all the riches baby,
One man can claim.
Well, I guess you say,
What can make me feel this way.
My girl,
Talking about my girl.
I've got sunshine on a cloudy day,
With my girl,
I even got the month of may,
My girl,
Talking about my girl,
Talking about,
Talking about,
My girl,
My girl.

enjoy, extremely good taste Ritchie

You can find them at Lyrics World on this page, as sung by the Temptations.

You had it in under 10 minutes, Richie. Not a Mudcat record, I don't think, but still quite Speedy....:-) Glad you like the link.

Subject: Lyr Add: She's My Girl (Tom Lehrer)
From: Noreen

To save your Lead fingers, Terry:
She's My Girl
(and more of his lyrics at same page, from An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer)

And now to the love song. I'm sure you're familiar with love songs on the order of He's Just My Bill, my man, my Joe, my Max, and so on where the girl who sings them tells you that, although the man she loves is anti-social, alcoholic, physically repulsive, or just plain unsanitary, nevertheless she is his because he is hers, or something like that. But as far as I know there has never been a popular song from the analogous male point of view, that is to say, of a man who finds himself in love with, or in this case married to, a girl who has nothing whatsoever to recommend her. I have attempted to fill this need. The song is called She's My Girl.

SHE'S MY GIRL
Tom Lehrer

Sharks gotta swim, and bats gotta fly,
I gotta love one woman till I die.
To Ed or Dick or Bob
She may be just a slob,
But to me, well,
She's my girl.

In winter the bedroom is one large ice cube,
And she squeezes the toothpaste from the middle of the tube.
Her hairs in the sink
Have driven me to drink,
But she's my girl, she's my girl, she's my girl,
And I love her.

The girl that I lament for,
The girl my money's spent for,
The girl my back is bent for,
The girl I owe the rent for,
The girl I gave up Lent for
Is the girl that heaven meant for me.

So though for breakfast she makes coffee that tastes like shampoo,
I come home for dinner and get peanut butter stew,
Or if I'm in luck,
It's broiled hockey puck,
But, oh well, what the hell,
She's my girl,
And I love her.

Otis Redding's 'My Girl' was really popular about the time I went overseas - every jukebox in Wildflecken Germany had it on. Good memories.

you know what I most like about this thread is the fact that it has kept on going after I have posted to it. Usually I 'kill the thread off' or at least it seemed that way. In fact at one time I was getting a complex.

Just as an aside Run&cw version is quite good too. But Otis's is by far the best.

I was very tempted NOT to reply, Ritchie, so that your prediction could come true ;0)

I think many of us have hasd that feeling at one time, that we are thread-killers (there was even a thread about it...)

I'm astounded that Otis' version of "My Girl" could possibly have been better known in Europe -- or, indeed, anywhere -- than the Motown original recorded by the Temptations. Smokey Robinson wrote it specifically to fit Eddie Kendricks' voice as the lead element in an enemble; the multiple vocal parts are intrinsic to the song, so much so that no solo performer could possibly do justice to the original. Are you guys *sure* you haven't been discussing the Temptations' record all along?

In the US, Otis' cover was nothing more than an obscure album cut while the Tempt's original was one of the greatest hits *ever.*

Otis is a great hero of mine, and his rough-hewn approach often brought a whole new flavor to songs formerly heard only in a much sweeter vein -- "Try a Little Tenderness" is probably the best example of this type of reinterpretation. But I don't think his rendition of "My Girl," while interesting and (of course) soulful as always, was in any way comparable to the original.

Thanks Noreen :)

PoppaGator, you've got to remember this is the 60's it's England it's cold and dark and we were just coming out of the Mod movement. Otis Redding was gutsy, strong, full of energy and excellent for seedy clubs good soulful R&B. The Temps sang some of the best songs ever, as only the Temps could infact they are as good now as they were then, the songs that is, not the Temptations.

The whole thing about 'best versions' is where you heard it first, what were you doing? who were you with? When it's a great song and then you check out the 'original' for example 'it's all over now' by the Stones .. much better by the Valentinos, Louie Louie by the Kinks, much better by Richard Perry, however you are right, Otis Redding can be judged much better thro' his interpretation of other songs.

you say potatoe and I say potatoe.
