11 Jul 03 - 02:18 AM (#981062) Subject: Best all-round English compilation album From: ooh-aah If you were trying to introduce someone to English folk, which album would you choose? The album should have a fine spread of artists, preferably including some 'proper' old folks such as Fred Jordan or the Coppers, and above all should have as many real classic 'core' English songs, such as 'Lovely Joan' and 'Through Bushes and Through Briars'. The arrangements should be 'straight' - the 'core' songs have become so well known that it's quite difficult, I think, to find simple un-jazzed up versions of them. There should be a good mix of genres, (ie, sea-songs, work songs, protest, love and plain happy songs). Any ideas? |

11 Jul 03 - 03:37 AM (#981086) Subject: RE: Best all-round English compilation album From: Kevin Sheils Difficult one For the proper old ones you need something from the voice of the people and for the rest something like the "acoustic folk box" or one of the many topic samplers called "the folk collection". I've had a quick scan through my "various artist" section on the CD shelves and can't find anything thta fits the bill in both areas so I'd suggest expanding to two CDs go for The Voice of the People sampler Topic TSCD751 and the Voice of Folk Topic TSCD705 I think they are both reasonably mid priced to stretch to two CDs. Of course you'll get a bit of Scottish and Irish (and quickly checking, Welsh) in there as well but borders are there to be crossed. |
