18 Aug 98 - 08:09 PM (#35294) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: alison Hi, Lannigan's ball. Atholl highlanders. I have 3 hornpipes (which I heard James Galway do once) which go down a treat:- He collectively called them the "Belfast Hornpipe". They are:- boys from the bluehill, Harvest home, Belfast hornpipe. Played at speed, can bring the house down. Slainte alison |
18 Aug 98 - 08:46 PM (#35302) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: Mick, No need for the peace sign, people around here are often too sensitive. :-) nice tunes.....I am not familiar with all of them. Do you know of any online midis of them? Alison .....I love Lannigan's Ball. I have heard a vocal version (I can't name the artists) that is played with a slower ....loping rhythm. It is a duet, Male and female. I just love it , very fun tune. We play it heavily swung. My wife plays Atholl Highlanders on the pipes(nice tune), I haven' tried it. I like "....bluehill", I don't know the others. I am not familiar with "Early one morning," either...I think i will look for MIDIs for all the tunes that get listed here and post them as links for everybody. |
19 Aug 98 - 12:04 AM (#35320) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: KickyC I love to play "The Star of the County Down" or "The Foggy Dew". I was jamming with a couple of friends the other night and one of them started to play the guitar and sing "A Frog Went A Courtin'". I played along on the whistle. It really sounded neat and was a lot of fun. I play a lot of other instruments, but the whistles really add a lot to a group no matter what the song is. KickyC |
19 Aug 98 - 04:09 AM (#35329) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: Barbara You know a real mindbender to play on a whistle with all the slide notes? Black is the Color of My True Love's hair. Course I like green salsa on my falafel, too. And out of all those O'carolan tunes, right now I like Blind Mary best. And Morgan Megan Or is it Megan Morgan? Someday when I'm really good I'll be able to play Wise Maid, and Drowsy Maggie up to speed. Oh, and I love Faraway Blessings, Barbara And I want to learn Butterfly, I've got it partly, need the sheet music. |
19 Aug 98 - 08:51 AM (#35340) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: alison hi Barbara, I'm nearly sure I posted the tune for Butterfly here within the last year. Try a thread search for "Butterfly". Slainte Alison |
19 Aug 98 - 11:00 AM (#35347) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: Jon W. How about "Dennis Murphy's Hornpipe"? I gave up halfway through trying to learn it, but I'll get back to it sometime. Also the only two I've performed in public: "Cumberland Reel" and Stephen Foster's "Hard Times Come Again No More" (on a C whistle). And for fellow beginners, "Amazing Grace" and "Simple Gifts" are easy to play and sound nice. |
19 Aug 98 - 02:31 PM (#35356) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: Kathleen My fav song for tin whistle is "Brian Boru's March" I have no idea how difficult it is in comparison. I sort of just bought a whistle on a whim at Ligonier Highland Games and have been picking up music here and there. Another good one is "MacPherson's Farwell" (or something along those lines). Also "Bold Fenian Men" Later, Kathleen |

20 Aug 98 - 04:18 PM (#35433) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: Tinwhistler OOOPS---I forgot Women of Ireland and My Laggan Love. Two slow airs I love, but can't play yet worth a darn. I'm workin' on 'em, though! |
20 Aug 98 - 06:13 PM (#35443) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: Dan Mulligan Tinwhistler, Are you Familiar with "Bonny Portmore?" It goes great with "The Clay Of Cill Creagan." (I really like that tune, also.) I am not familiar with those last two slow airs. I would really like to be able to post links to all of the tunes listed , but I am not having any luck finding them on-line.If anyone has gif files (or MIDIs) of these tunes I would be glad to post them at my web site if there is interest.....Then I will post links to the tunes on this thread. |
20 Aug 98 - 09:04 PM (#35465) Subject: Tune Add: FARAWAY (Peter Jung) From: Barbara Here's one of my favorites. I b'lieve it's recently composed, and is by Peter Jung. It is called Faraway. 27 Aug 98 - 09:39 PM (#36179) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: Don of Poteen Just got in on this thread. Having whistled for some time now; on the set mentioned by Alison "The Hornpipe Set" my band has done in this compilation -- Home Rule / Harvest Home/ Boys from Bluehill and then for the tag try doing all three simultaniously ( sp? ) What a thrill ride. Try this and I won't be held responsible!!! |
28 Aug 98 - 05:56 PM (#36282) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: BAZ How about a slow one? Finbar Furey's Lonesome Boatman. I've heard most of the tunes listed so far and there ain't bad one amongst them. Regards Baz. |

29 Aug 98 - 12:55 AM (#36318) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: willie How about Midnight on the Water? David Brombergs version on an album of the same name. |
29 Aug 98 - 04:43 AM (#36343) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: alison Hi, Lonesome Boatsman is a great tune but you'll need a lot of reverb to sound anything like Finbar. Slainte alison |
29 Aug 98 - 10:56 AM (#36359) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: Kiwi Heyla, I'd have to say that my favorite whistle tune would have to be "Banish Misfortune". Question: For "The Butterfly", what key do you play it in on the whistle? I worked it out by ear on the flute, but that goes below the whistle range. Slán, Kiwi |
29 Aug 98 - 11:20 AM (#36360) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: Barbara On the C whistle, the first note is A; on the D whistle, B. I think that gives you enough room for the low notes. Try it. Blessings, Barbara |
29 Aug 98 - 08:53 PM (#36398) Subject: RE: Favorite Whistle Tunes From: Great tunes. Barbara has been helping out by making MIDIs of a few of them. I should have a page of MIDIs of them by Sunday afternoon..... Remember, we want to know what your favorites are to play. They don't need to be traditional, or old, or difficult to play....the only criterion is that they make you happy just playing them. Maybe some of us will learn them and enjoy them the way you do.
