13 Jul 03 - 07:05 PM (#982554) Subject: RE: BS: Good luck to interviewees From: Walking Eagle Oh Lordy, I sre do! I haven't had to hit the bricks in a while and I wish everyone well who has to. Remember to follow up on your interviews with a phone call. If you don't get the job, ask why not so as to improve your chances for next time. Send a thank you note when all is said and done. Best of luck! |

13 Jul 03 - 07:13 PM (#982562) Subject: RE: BS: Good luck to interviewees From: Helen Career Development eManual is an excellent site for working out your personal qualities, skills and values and that helps with one of the most common questions in job interviews which are about your strengths. Talking about your own strengths and good points is probably the hardest trick to master because many people tend to undervalue themselves. (As an aside, by working through this self assessment you will end up with a three letter code called a Holland Occupational Code, and if you want to know what sort of jobs might suit you then NY State CareerZone has an excellent list of jobs based on that code. Click on the three letters of the code and then "View Jobs" and see a list of a hundred or more, each with links to very detailed info about the jobs.) I use both these sites in my job seeking skills courses. The other major piece of advice I give is the trick I use myself: no matter what the question always answer by giving an *example* of where you worked or used a *skill/value/trait/strength*, and what *outcome* you achieved, e.g. "when I work as a vocational trainer I use my analytical and problem solving skills to create better training sessions for the students and many students have told me that I make the courses interesting and very practical and useful for them". Noreen, CatsPhiddle and Geoff the Duck, I hope it all goes well for you, and don't get too despondent if you don't get the first job you go for. Remember it is like courtship, it is a two sided affair. Both you and the potential employers need to feel happy that you can make a commitment to each other over the long term so if it doesn't feel right to you then believe that the right job is out there waiting for you and stay positive. 14 Jul 03 - 11:52 AM (#982997) Subject: RE: BS: Good luck to interviewees From: Rapparee From one who was unemployed two months ago -- the interview is your chance to brag. Don't fib, though. One of my employment coaches always said, "Absolute intergrity! Always!" Having worked for many years in "Human Resources" for some of the US's biggest companies, he knew what he was talking about. And be yourself (but wait...you're all 'Catters...maybe this isn't such hot advice). Another thing: scope out where you're going before the interview so you don't get turned around and can arrive 15 minutes early. When it's over, thank everyone you talked to, including the receptionist. In writing. (Tip: try to get cards from everyone so you know who they are and where to write them.) |

15 Jul 03 - 04:22 PM (#983963) Subject: RE: BS: Good luck to interviewees From: Shelley C Good luck to you all! I have recently handed in my notice at work without another job to go to. A bit scary, but I just couldn't carry on taking the crap. I leave on 29th August. So (hopefully) I'll be getting some job interviews soon. Hope everything goes well for all of us, especially Amergin struggling on the dole. The ridiculous thing is that I am a Careers Adviser by profession, and I would never advise anyone to chuck in their job unless they had something else lined up. But I guess sometimes you just have to 'feel the fear and do it anyway'. Goog luck, all |

18 Jul 03 - 06:09 PM (#986227) Subject: RE: BS: Good luck to interviewees From: Helen Shelley, I did that - chucked in a job I had had enough of. It's scary but I think I did the right thing. I had a bit of a holiday and then found some part time work and I am still working part time by choice but I could get a full time job if I wanted to. I had a major career change and I am much much happier now than I have ever been in my life. I used the change to totally re-evaluate my life and work out what I really want to do and then started putting the plans into action. Best thing I have ever done. Helen |

19 Jul 03 - 02:30 PM (#986643) Subject: RE: BS: Good luck to interviewees From: Rapparee Some years back my youngest brother lost his job when the store he'd worked at for 16 years was sold. Off and on after that he'd be unemployed, employed, unemployed. Then, two and half years ago, he was hired as a CADman at a company which makes heating elements (like, for McDonald's and such). Last week he worked overtime -- again. Yesterday he was laid off. He has two sons, both in high school now. His youngest boy was struck by a car a year ago last May and had knee surgery in September. After the surgery he started seizing; doctors are baffled, but it's getting better. Fortunately, his wife is a respiratory therapist and has health insurance through the hospital where she works. He'll be starting his job hunting on Monday -- he's already renewed his substitute teaching documents. It hits me right in the gut because I was nearly a year unemployed. If you have a chance, wing some good thoughts over to west central Illinois way. He can use 'em right about now. |

19 Jul 03 - 02:46 PM (#986651) Subject: RE: BS: Good luck to interviewees From: Shelley C Helen - thanks for those encouraging words. Part-time sounds great! In fact that is also part of my plan - if I could find a part time job I'd be well made up. Continuous good wishes to all job seekers, and I'll be winging special postitve thoughts to Illinois (though it's a hell of a long way from Birmingham, UK) |

29 Aug 03 - 12:55 PM (#1010317) Subject: RE: BS: Good luck to interviewees From: HuwG I went for one yesterday, and am still a nervous gibbering wreck. Nowhere to park, so I am two minutes late to begin with. Then they threw the dreaded technical questions at me. They told me to write some C++ code on the right-hand side of a white board, which itself was jamed against the right-hand wall. I am left-handed. Interviewers were leaning almost horizontally to read my resulting downward-slanting drunken spider's trail. Aaargh ! "We'll let you know". Early next week sometime. |

30 Aug 07 - 08:59 PM (#2137243) Subject: RE: BS: Good luck to interviewees From: HuwG Very, very late update. I have landed a Software Engineer job, at a firm which markets a computer booking system for minicab firms. After four years out of the industry, they are offering a comparative pittance of a wage, but will review matters after sixty days. They threw a technical test at me, and told me I had scored 79%. Quite how they calculated that score from twenty "true or false" questions is rather a mystery. Luckily, they use software which I have used before, and also have on this very PC on which I am composing this message. (I have been attempting to rewrite some "abandonware" games in proper object-oriented, non-spaghetti C++. It is a slow process, but it has kept my hand in.) I will still keep working behind the bar at weekends, to earn petrol money for the rest of the week. |
