14 Jul 03 - 10:07 AM (#982909) Subject: Soundtrack for a Devon holiday From: red max This Saturday me and the family are heading down the M5 to spend a week in South Devon. Strapped to the roof will be my trusty bicycle, as I'm hoping to explore some of the Dartmoor National Park. With this in mind, I've been taping some old LPs to play on my walkman. Choices so far have been… Tony Rose – Young Hunting Cyril Tawney – Down Among the Barley Straw The Taw Folk – Devonshire Cream and Cider Robin & Barry Dransfield – The Rout of the Blues I know the latter pair were from my native Yorkshire, but the album does feature The Earl of Totnes (I wonder if the horse shoes are still on the chapel door?). Have I missed anything obvious? And does anyone have any recommended routes for biking? Probably not off road Clotted cream all round, me boys! |

I've heard of Johnny Collins, but never actually heard one of his albums. I did check out one of his LP sleeves, but was put off by the rather weird mixture of song styles. Good beard, though |

They were from Chagford (on eastern side of the Moor), and are grandfather and great uncle to Jason Rice, of Moor Music and the current Pixie Band line-up. In my opinion, Les Rice's mouth organ playing is some of the most outstanding ever recorded! I suspect (but am not sure) that his ability to play tune and accompaniment at the same time, may have something to do with not having all his teeth. There's a CD of the Rice family available from Veteran Records. |

We've been very privileged that Herga has been his local folk club for the last quarter century or more, including the years when it was Jim Mageean's local folk club too. Tony Rose made a CD (Bare Bones)a few years ago, round about the time he was retiring from teaching and looking forward to some singing tours. While you're in the area, and on the basis of what I heard at the National and other festivals, if you get any chance to hear members of the Rice, Baizely/ Cann, Murch, Orchard families, just go for it. I think there's a Sunday folk club at Topsham. Kitty |
