Another great loss in the world of music.
Benny Carter, whose combination of highly developed talents as composer, arranger, bandleader and soloist on a variety of instruments was unmatched in the jazz world, died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was 95.

Carter's career was remarkable for both its length and its consistently high musical achievement, from his first recordings in the 1920s to his youthful-sounding improvisations in the 1990s. His pure-toned, impeccably phrased performances made him one of the two pre-eminent alto saxophonists in jazz, with Johnny Hodges, from the late 1920s until the arrival of Charlie Parker in the mid-1940s…

I'm amazed he has only just died! He seemed - did - belong to an age so long gone by. Lovely player! We can talk about great folk flute and whistle players But Benny ......

Benny Carter led an orchestra at the age of twenty in the year Lindbergh landed in Paris, the year the Babe hit sixty.

Glad he hung around as long as he did, from 78s to CDs...
