Origins: Missing in Action

D'Cats--

I've checked the Forum and the DT, and didn't find this one anywhere. A friend of my dad's gave me the following lyrics, and is looking for a recording of it. We don't know who performed it originally, or which conflict it refers to. The following lyric was written out by my dad's friend--on the same sheet of paper is "Doc William Chickie and Border Rider" neither one of which appears to turn up anything relevant on google.

All info gratefully appreciated!

Missing In Action

The war ship had landed and I came ashore
The fighting was over for me evermore
For I had been wounded; they left me for dead
A stone for my pillow and snow for my bed
The enemy found me and took me away
And made me a prisoner of war so they say
But God in his mercy was with me one day
The gates were left open and I ran away
I returned home my sweet wife to see
The door left open and there on a stand
I saw a picture of her and a man
The clothes she was wearing told me a sad tale
My wife was wearing a new bridal veil
So I pick up the picture and kiss it good bye
For missing in action she thought I was dead
