Tech: Band width exceeded?

Subject: Tech: Band width limit exceeded?
From: michaelr

I was trying to access the Old Advanced Forum Search and got this message:

The daily bandwidth limit for this customer has been exceeded. Try again after midnight, EST.

That's a new one for me. Has anyone else run into this? How come I can start a new thread, but not look at old ones?

Cheers,
Michael

Think of the wire that connects that server as a pipe, and the data as marbles running through the pipe. Your message means they'd only pain for a million marbles through the pipe per day and the day's allotment was used up. That's all.

That's not a mudcat message, I bet -- more likely an ISP message? Ya think? Or was it a formatted Mudcat style message? Too cleve rby far as a way to keep the drain down.

Sounds like an ISP message to me, too.

"Bandwidth" is one word, BTW; "band width" is a different problem altogether. I'll resist the temptation to make the joke, but be warned: others might not be so considerate!

I've run into that message a few times but never on Mudcat. How were you trying to access the old search? The most likely explanaition to me is that you were trying to access another site by miss-typing a URL.

Isn't the song database being hosted temporarily somewhere different from usual, following Max's domestic problems?

ISP's ration the volume of data fetched from their customers homepages to make sure a few don't hog all the bandwidth. If it's been moved to a 'customers homepages' site that would explain it. If you want more bandwidth you have to pay for it by hosting on 'commercial web space'.

Anahata, Michaelr mentioned trying the Old Advanced Forum Search, not the song database. Even if the songdatabase was hosted elswhere, this search doesn't look at it. it's a pretty straight subject/username search on the forum.

I don't know that anything is being hosted elsewhere.

I can't imagine how that could happen on a mudcat.org page. You must have somehow been looking at a different page.

Anahata, the Mudcat was hosted elsewhere for a few days when Max moved, but only with a message that it was unavailable.
