Now when I had plenty of money

I hope someone can help me. the new Chieftains recording "Old Plank Road" contains the following song:

Now when I had plenty of money, good people
all my friends would gather around
Just as soon as my pocket book was empty
not a friend on this earth to be found

Now my money taught me of plenty good people
and my papa taught me more
He said, if you don't quit your rough & wild ways
there'll be trouble at your door

All around this old jailhouse there's plenty good people
$20 won't pay my fine
For Liquor has surrounded my body
pretty women jump in my mind
Now if you don't quit your drinkin'
some day you'll be just like me
Workin' out your livin'
in a penitentary

Now when I am dead & buried, good people
and my pale face turns to the sun
You can gather around all your fine friends
and see This Old Rounder do down

I have this song on another recording but I can't figure out which of my CDs has it on it (I have nearly 700 CDS). Anyone know what recordings it might be on?

Try Doc Watson (see entry #5)

Oops. I should have mentioned the song title used there: "Country Blues".

This song is related to lots of others - take a look at this thread (click) for two versions of "Country Blues."

Hey, thanks for the help. I have heard Doc's version, though I don't own that CD. Interesting side (relative to your helpful link, Joe), I was having trouble trying to get the song in my head (hoping that the more I could remember of it, it might strike me what the voice I'm used to hearing sing it sounded like)...

...anyway, the more I tried to remember the recorded version I'm after, the more all I could remember was "Darlin Corie" and Joel Mabus' version of it.

I don't own very many old recordings -- my "folk" collection started in about '78 (with John Hartford and soon got caught up in lots of "newgrass"). Therefore, the recording I'm after is probably not that old.

Thanks for the help -- found what I was looking for in my vinyl. Untold Stories by Hot Rize has the song. Because of your advice though, I now have the Watson version as well.

...oh, and playing a pretty cool version of it in DADGAD
